• Tell CA Elected Representatives That We Need to Act on Climate Change
Right now, the California State Legislature is considering a bill that would create cleaner air for our children, more economic opportunities for our neighborhoods, and a healthier climate for our planet. Oil companies and other industries that want to stop progress are fighting tooth and nail to defeat this bill. If we want our community to be heard over the oil companies, we have to take action now. You have a powerful voice in preparing for and helping to prevent further climate change. Sign this petition to tell your representatives to support SB 350, the Golden State Standards.

  • Solar Power and Federal Tax Credits
The solar industry has been providing good, high paying jobs throughout the country and it's the fastest growing job sector. Letting the federal tax credit expire would be detrimental to our economy, environment and national security.

  • Stand up Against Animal Abuse
Animals need someone to speak on their behalf. Animals are living creatures, have a soul, have feeling and emotions, and can be traumatized just like humans. Why do some people treat them like the Nazis did to the Jews, or put them in slaughter houses, skin them alive, mutilate them for fun? Won't you be a voice for these beautiful creatures?

  • Pass The Low Income Solar Act
    1. For homeowners with suitable roofs this legislation would provide grants to help reduce the upfront costs of installing solar panels. For renters or families unable to install solar on their roofs the bill provides loans to solar developers to connect low-income families to solar either physically, or virtually through the construction of community solar facilities. In all cases this bill encourages job training to local communities. 2. Promotes diversity in the workforce by prioritizing loans for woman- and minority owned small businesses. 3. Sets aside a portion of funds for developing solar economies in Appalachia, Indian tribal lands, and Alaskan native communities.

  • Help us defend GMO labeling laws!
Last year, Vermont passed a law requiring most genetically engineered foods to be labeled…and soon, industry attacked. Earthjustice has now gone to court to defend Vermont’s law and stand up to these attacks. But now an extremist segment of the food industry is pushing to prohibit GMO labeling anywhere in the country. You have a right to know what’s in the food you eat. Take action now to defend that right. The House has already passed a bill prohibiting any and all state and local GMO labeling requirements. We need more food transparency, not less! Tell your senator you oppose this legislation now! The bill goes far beyond labeling—it would preclude not only labeling, but also all state and local regulation of GMOs. We’re defending communities in Hawai‘i that have chosen to restrict the growing of GMO crops to protect conventional and organic farmers from contamination and the public from associated pesticide use. In fact, Earthjustice has litigated for years to protect people and the environment from dangers associated with genetically modified food crops. More than 99% of GMO crops are created to withstand toxic chemical applications or produce their own pesticides, leading to greater pesticide use. Increased use of pesticides and the emergence of pesticide-resistant weeds are just two of the problems GMO crops create, not to mention possible long-term health effects and risks to biodiversity. GMO crops also reduce consumers’ ability to avoid GMO-contaminated food and farmers’ ability to protect their non-GMO fields from contamination. More than 60 countries already require GMO labeling. Today, we’re asking you to stand up for food transparency in the United States!

  • Charge deposits on all drink containers.
This petition is about cleaning our land and reducing non-biodegradable rubbish onto the nation's highways and landfills. Pressure such as this, as in the raising of mileage requirements, will cause the industry to find alternatives to the cans and bottle they put into the stream of commerce which cause unfair burdens of removal on the state's.

  • Put Soil Carbon Sequestration on Agenda for Paris UNFCCC
Reversing Climate Change is an urgent subject. The soil regeneration solution is elegant, inexpensive, and can be started right away. Generally, politicians don't know much about agriculture, and therefore this solution is not getting the attention it deserves. We need to listen to the growing body of soil scientists who are advocating for soil carbon sequestration as the best way to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere. We are ALL personally affected by climate change. The deadline for this petition is November 30, 2015.

  • Support an Initiative for the White House Administration: National Community Wind Partnership
This call to action is to support an initiative encouraging the White House Administration to create a National Community Wind Partnership that fits with other Administration initiatives and the urgency of climate change. Whether a small town, mid-size regional center or a large city there are ways to increase access to wind energy for all. Community Wind and Community Shared Wind are nascent wind development models based on Main Street rather than Wall Street. This partnership will help grow more local wind projects. Wind is central in meeting our climate challenges. What is Community Wind? Community wind projects have elements of local ownership, investment, and involvement all at a local level. There are any size and quantity of wind turbines. Community wind projects are owned by rural electric cooperatives, municipal utilities, schools, hospitals, businesses, farms, and tribal communities. What are the advantages of Community Wind? • Provide greater economic benefits than absentee-owned wind projects • Offer increased local control • Rural communities are primarily located for community wind (and community shared wind) • Help stabilize energy prices for local communities • Receive high levels of local support for the development • Are a local clean energy solution that addresses the global issue of cleaning up our energy system • Use minimal amounts of water in production of energy Source Document: US Dept of Energy – Wind and Water Program DOE/GO-102012-3785 • November 2012 What is Community Shared Renewable Energy (or Community Shared Wind Energy)? Utility customers can subscribe to a community shared renewable project for any portion of their electricity and it shows up as a credit on their utility bill. What are the benefits of community shared renewables for a home, business, or individual? • Urban areas do not usually have on site wind-appropriate land availability for a wind project • Maintenance is taken care of by the wind operations professionals • Renewable energy technologies are capital intensive upfront and costs are more easily covered over time • Community shared renewable energies allow for greater choice for the source of your energy. For further reading: US Dept. of Energy, Green Power Network http://apps3.eere.energy.gov/greenpower/community_development/ Various business models exist for community shared renewable energy, including utility-sponsored, on-bill crediting, special purpose entity, and the “community shared gardens”. Windustry and the Distributed Wind Energy Association are working to grow the adoption of these models for community shared wind energy.

  • Protect Mahomet Aquifer from Clinton Landfill
On Tuesday, September 1, the Champaign City Council is expected to vote [1] on an agreement ("consent decree") with the Clinton landfill, which lies over the Mahomet aquifer. The consent decree does some good things, but appears to allow the landfill to accept poisonous “non-hazardous special wastes” [2] - including coal ash, fracking brines, and mine wastes - without any public hearing on the matter. The agreement has only recently been available for public review. (See last several pages of this link [3] to Urbana's council packet.) This agreement should be subject to more careful public review and debate before the governments of Champaign and Urbana commit to it. Please urge Champaign and Urbana officials to defer final action on the proposed consent decree until concerns about disposal of “non-hazardous special wastes” have been publicly addressed by signing our petition. P.S.: If you're in Champaign, please come to the next Council meeting: Tuesday, September 1, 7pm Champaign City Building 102 N.
