Gov. Wolf: Respond to DOH Documents by Stopping FrackingWe have said for years that continuing fracking in Pennsylvania will lead to a public health nightmare for our state. Now we have the documents to prove it. Pennsylvanians Against Fracking steering committee member Food & Water Watch has obtained documents from the Pennsylvania Department of Health showing that the agency has had a clear pattern of responding inadequately to fracking-related health complaints. In many instances, the Department of Health responded to serious health complaints by pushing the complaint onto another agency or suggesting that individuals seek out expensive tests on their own dime. Much of this negligence occurred before Governor Wolf came into office, but the problem is now his responsibility. Governor Wolf must act immediately to halt fracking in Pennsylvania now, and put forward a plan to help individuals already adversely impacted by fracking. Join us in calling on Gov. Wolf to protect the people of Pennsylvania.4,720 of 5,000 SignaturesCreated by Karen Feridun

Senator Sanders: Protect Our Right to Know. Stop the DARK Act!On July 23 (2015), the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1599, a bill written by the biotech and processed food industries that preempts states’ rights to pass laws requiring the mandatory labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The bill also would prevent passage of a federal mandatory GMO labeling law. We call H.R. 1599 the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act, because that is its sole intent--to deprive consumers of ever having the right to this basic information. Senator Sanders is in a unique position to attract mass media attention to this bill, and to persuade his fellow U.S. Senators to oppose a Senate version of the bill, when it is introduced. After all, Vermont's mandatory GMO labeling law, set to take effect July 1, 2016, would be repealed under the DARK Act. And the Boxer-DeFazio Bill, a federal bill intended to require mandatory labeling of GMOs--a bill that Sen. Sanders has agreed to co-sponsor--would be preempted under H.R. 1599. We need Sen. Sanders to speak out now, before a Senate version of this bill is introduced and gains traction. If we don't stop this bill, Monsanto will permanently take away our right to know about GMOs.53,138 of 75,000 SignaturesCreated by Katherine Paul, Organic Consumers Association

Ban Bear Dog HuntingI have a cottage in northern Michigan and have state land across the street from my property. Several trucks full of dogs and their hunters hunt for bear in these woods. Whenever I have seen bear they are extremely scared; sniffing the air and turning their heads at every slight sound. They hurt no one and all neighbors enjoy seeing them. I have also found several lost bear-dogs and have had to find homes for them for they are left abandoned with no-one looking for them. It's a horrible method of hunting for both bear and dog. Bear's are only seen as a trophy and these dogs as mere things to use to capture their trophy bear. Michigan needs to protect our bear for the population of them are so small. Hunting for them should not be so cruel and frightening.41 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Kim Parr

Stop Bomb Trains: Revoke the Permit for Dangerous Shipments of Oil by TrainWhen I learned that local regulators gave permission to oil companies to haul tanker cars full of crude oil on the railroad tracks a few blocks from my home, I was terrified. I’ve heard of horrific fiery train disasters involving similar trains -- including one that killed 47 people and incinerated half of the downtown of a small city in Canada. If the same thing happened here, my family and my neighbors would have no chance of surviving. According to the Wall Street Journal, the oil carried on these trains -- called Bakken crude -- is much more volatile and prone to explosion than other types of crude, making it particularly hazardous when tank cars derail or puncture. The agency responsible for protecting our community from these dangers -- the Bay Area Air Quality Management District -- recently granted permission to Kinder Morgan to haul oil by train through our community. The Air Quality Management District conducted the process in secret without notifying the public or conducting a public review. As a mom, I want to fight for the community my babies are growing up in. Right now, it’s a risk and a gamble to live here, but if enough people sign this petition, I believe we can create a better, safer, and greener community. And if we win here in the backyard of the oil companies, it’ll set an important precedent that could help stop bomb trains across the state and even across the country. Please sign my petition to demand the Bay Area Air Quality Management District reverse their decision and hold an open public review process that allows local residents to decide if we want to allow bomb trains in our neighborhoods.333 of 400 SignaturesCreated by Mouang Saeyang with APEN

Tell Target: Stop Financing Big Tobacco’s Global War Against Public HealthTarget was the first major retail chain to stop selling cigarettes (back in 1996). Last fall, CVS made headlines when it too discontinued the sale of tobacco products. But CVS just did Target one better by also withdrawing from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. As revealed in a recent New York Times series, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is deliberately and systematically opposing public health efforts in numerous countries to reduce tobacco use. Just in case there’s any confusion, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is neither part of the federal government (that’s the Department of Commerce) nor anything like your local Chamber of Commerce (which may well be composed of small business owners genuinely concerned about your community). Rather, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s most aggressive corporate lobbyist, spending more each year than any other company or organization to push policies that benefit Big Business. Does Target really want to be associated with what the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is doing to shill for Big Tobacco and defend a product that kills 6 million people worldwide every year? We call on you to follow the lead of CVS by withdrawing Target’s membership in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.76 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Glenn Simpson, Public Citizen

Paynes Prairie in dangerYou may have read in the papers that Governor Scott is encouraging private business to rent our State Parks for grazing cattle or growing and harvesting trees. Myakka River was first, but Paynes Prairie is now in the sights. The future of Florida’s state parks depends on your apathy or your action. It is your choice. The Ocala Star-Banner reported: Jim Stevenson, retired Florida Park Service chief naturalist, was chairman of a committee that wrote the management plan for Paynes Prairie when it was bought by the state. They voted to remove the cattle, Stevenson said, adding that state parks have historically been managed for their natural values rather than human uses other than recreation. “We felt the cattle should go and they were removed, and the fences were removed. It became a state preserve instead of a cattle ranch,” Stevenson said. “That's been in play for 47 years and everything has been fine until the DEP secretary decided that he wants cows on state parks.” But Governor Scott has a different plan - Cattle ranch owners have already been invited to government meetings to discuss setting aside part of the Prairie for grazing cattle. Whether or not you support Governor Scott on other issues, you will hopefully agree that this is a misuse of our park system. Forbidding certain sectors of publicly-owned land to the general public, while allowing a small subset of the public to use those sectors for individual profit, is not what the State Parks were created for, but it seems to be what the current administration has in mind. A few years ago, Governor Scott’s previous DEP Secretary told his deputy secretary that he wanted to privatize the entire state park system. The deputy advised against it, knowing there would be a huge public outcry. The current game plan to reach that goal: 1. Exploit the natural resources through hunting, cattle grazing and timbering which will require “private” contractors and further crush morale of the park service staff. 2. Starve the parks by eliminating more staff and funding each year including professional biologists and education staff. DEP has recommended cutting 209 park service positions during the Scott administration. Instead, the Legislature cut 78 positions. 3. In the absence of adequate staff and funding, the parks won’t be able to get their job done. 4. Gov. Scott increases “Free Days” which reduces revenue while park managers are struggling to increase revenue. 5. The parks’ facilities and resources will deteriorate and the politicians will criticize the poor management. 6. Since the park service will not be able to maintain the resources, DEP is justified to “privatize the state park system.” Of course government should be run like a business. End Game is achieved.14,352 of 15,000 SignaturesCreated by Shirley Lasseter

Senator Nelson: Protect Matanzas Inlet from Oil Drilling! Establish the Eubalaena Oculina Nationa...I'm the Matanzas Riverkeeper in St. Augustine, Florida. Oil and gas interests want to drill off Florida's east coast. An oil spill will devastate the Matanzas River and its estuaries. A National Marine Sanctuary will prevent oil and gas activities offshore of Matanzas Inlet while allowing commercial and recreational fishing activities to continue. Tell President Obama and Senator Bill Nelson to establish this National Marine Sanctuary before it's too late! Stop the oil and gas industry from destroying the Matanzas River--Florida's last, best, River.82 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Neil A. Armingeon

President Obama: Protect Orcas by Removing Four Lower Snake River DamsPresident Obama is considering taking bold, needed action that would help to save orcas (killer whales) in the Pacific. Orcas rely on salmon for up to ninety percent their diet, but these fish are in rapid decline. The western drought and the presence of four outdated dams are bringing the salmon and steelhead of the Snake River to the edge of extinction, and harming the ability of orcas to survive. The best available science concludes that removing these dams and restoring a free-flowing lower Snake River would allow for the restoration of healthy salmon runs and provide a vital food source for wild orcas.946 of 1,000 SignaturesCreated by Mitch Merry
