Keep Rhode Island beaches safe from sewageAfter a decade of declining summer beach closures in Rhode Island, they are back on the rise in 2013, with over 100 closures around the state already this summer. EPA was supposed to propose a new rule to curb this pollution in June, but we’re still waiting. Let’s urge EPA to keep our beaches safe from sewage.163 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Channing Jones

Women Deserve Clean WaterI've seen firsthand what a difference easy access to clean water and sanitation can make in the lives of women and girls around the world. Without it, they are sicker, less safe, and (for girls) less likely to be in school. New legislation in Congress, The Water for the World Act of 2013, could greatly expand access to these vital services. Please sign Women Thrive Worldwide's petition and urge your Representative to support it.88 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Christopher Burley

President Obama: New York Wants Fracking Banned, on Public Lands and Everywhere! The Obama Administration recently proposed new, woefully inadequate, rules for oil and gas fracking on federal lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. By doing so, the BLM will pave the way for drillers to amass corporate profits at the expense of our American treasures and essential resources. Stand with the people of New York in calling for a National Ban by signing this petition to submit comments under protest for drilling on public lands. No amount of rules will fix the industry's well-documented chronic well casing failures, nor mitigate the gross amount of chemicals, volatile organic compounds, or methane contamination in groundwater. New Yorkers have long been embroiled in an epic struggle with the oil and gas industry, fighting for basic necessities and resources that are often repeatedly compromised by the drilling and fracking process such as clean water, air, and food, not to mention good health and a sustainable future. New Yorkers know that not only do we need to protect our pristine public lands by banning fracking in those areas, but we also need to protect all Americans from this dubious practice which involves the injecting of millions of gallons of water laced with toxic, cancer causing chemicals in order to shatter bedrock. Studies show that the process of drilling, fracking, processing and transporting natural gas results in a tremendous amount of methane being released into the air. Methane is 70-100 times more potent than CO2 over a 20- year time frame. Recently published peer-reviewed studies on methane emissions show that, at present, gas extraction and combustion significantly contributes more greenhouse emissions than burning coal. So not only is fracking dangerous, but the methane emissions from fracking accelerate climate change and spell disaster for our country. The best way to protect our revered public lands and the rest of our country – including our air, water, food, health and climate - from fracking is to prohibit this inherently dangerous form of fossil fuel extraction entirely. This comment is submitted under protest the question isn't how we should be fracking, but if we should be doing it at all.2,263 of 3,000 SignaturesCreated by United For Action

Outlaw "Hydraulic Fracking" in GeorgiaExploration wells to find natural gas are already in the ground in NW Georgia. Based on the experience of citizens in other states, the air, land & water pollution, the health issues, Georgia should ban all exploration that results in the creation of injection wells. To obtain natural gas, large injection wells must be built that are forced through layers of soils, rock and possible aquifer layers. These then pump great quantities of water and unknown, unidentified chemicals through piping to force the gas to the surface. At every stage of the drilling process fracking puts our air, land and and water at risk of contamination. Fracturing rock releases hazardous gases from beneath our land, such as hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, and methane. Quantities of these chemicals are known to serious cause blood disorders, negative neurological problems and reproductive challenges. Fracking uses up to seven million gallons of water per injection well and by using this resource for these wells decreases the amount of drinking water available for us. Chemicals used to blast through rock layers are highly toxic and are present in the waste water produced. Not only is this water forever polluted, cracks in the wells and piping used will allow the polluted water to leak into our ground and will contaminate the ground as well as our aquifers and stream beds. The health, safety and welfare of our citizens is at risk; the welfare of our ecosystem is at risk. We want to ban the exploration and use of natural gas in the state of Georgia so that our citizens continue to have clean and safe water, air and land. We want to keep our state clean. We encourage the exploration and use of sustainable energy using clean energy sources such as wind and water movement and solar power.38 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Eleanor Rosen

Help Protect Californians from FrackingHelp pass SB 4 (Pavley) through the California legislature. This bill will require oil companies to tell the public about fracking and other risky oil and gas drilling operations. Fracking and fracking related activities, have been linked to ground and surface water pollution, air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, earthquakes, and property damage around the country, yet in California the practice is largely unregulated. There are no requirements for obtaining a permit, disclosing chemical or water use, or monitoring for groundwater pollution. This bill will promote the public's right to know and give us the information we need to keep fracking out of our communities. Transparency and information is an important first step in protecting our state, and our communities from the dangers of fracking. Key provisions of SB 4. This bill would require: • A comprehensive framework for fracking and well stimulation regulations. • A permit before well stimulation can occur. • Disclosure of identities and volumes of chemicals injected as part of any well stimulation. • Disclosure of the quantity and source of water used in well stimulation. • Advance notice to neighbors of proposed well stimulation projects. • Monitoring of groundwater quality, before and after well stimulation. • A state conducted scientific study on the risks of fracking, acid injection and other well stimulation processes. • Formal agreements between the Division of Oil Gas and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR), the Air Resources Board, State Water Board, and other agencies to ensure accountability, transparency and regulatory cooperation. STOP demolition of Hollywood Park 12/2013Hollywood Park Race Track is set for demolition by developers. Our mission is the preservation of this iconic -- and-- Californian landmark. TAKE ACTION! Horses such as Seabiscuit, Lava Man, Citation & Zenyatta have lived and raced here. Trainers such as Jack Van Berg, Bobby Frankel, Charlie Whittingham, Doug O' Neill and Bobby Baffert train or have trained here. Jockeys like Red Pollard, Pat Day, Chantal Sutherland, Laffit Pincay, Victor Espinoza and Mike Smith have raced here. Bing Crosby, Walt Disney, Samuel Goldwyn are a few of the famous luminaries who contributed to Hollywood Park's history! The Hollywood Park infield lake has a young flock of Flamingos originating from Hialeah Park Race Track, the sole fertile flock in the USA. The original flock (12 birds) imported from Cuba in the 60's has increased to nearly 500 including some of the original breeding stock. If we preserve the habitat in Hollywood Park, San Diego Zoo experts predict that this flock could increase to 4-500 birds by 2070. Your signature and comment could help preserve Hollywood Park by listing it on the National Trust's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in USA for future generations to enjoy.425 of 500 SignaturesCreated by Allison Booth

Tell Michelle Obama to stand up for the bees!First Lady Michelle Obama has done something extraordinary: she’s not only brought an organic garden to the White House, she’s also installed a hive of 70,000 bees. Like many backyard gardeners and beekeepers across the country, the First Lady is doing her part to create a habitat for bees, which are essential pollinators for one out of three bites of food. But as you’ve probably heard, bees are dying off around the world in record numbers. A growing body of science is pointing to the world’s most popular class of pesticides called neonicotinoids (or neonics), made by giant chemical companies Bayer and Syngenta, as the key factor in the global bee die-off crisis. Please ask Michelle to set an example for the nation by removing bee-killing pesticides from the White House gardens, urging the EPA to protect bees and calling on Congress to support the Save America’s Pollinators Act, recently introduced by Rep. John Conyers (D, Mich.) and Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D, Ore.).151 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Peter Stocker
