Redesign Yoplait yogurt containersSmall animals (skunks, squirrels) looking for food find their heads stuck -- eyes, nose and mouth totally covered by Yoplait containers, which have been left as litter by unthinking people. Due to the container's inverted shape the container remains on the animal. They are rarely rescued and suffocate. All because Yoplait has a poorly designed container.629 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Deborah Craig

American Petroleum Institute: Stop Bullying Communities That Don’t Want FrackingNot content with the power it holds over lawmakers in Washington, the American Petroleum Institute is now waging a battle against small towns. The powerful oil and gas lobbying group has weighed in on an important court case that will decide whether a town in rural, upstate New York has the right to ban oil and gas drilling activities – including the controversial fracking method – within its town borders. API, predictably, thinks that no town should have that right. Of the ten largest U.S. oil and gas companies, nine are API members. All nine of these companies have headquarters in Texas, Oklahoma, or California – states where courts or legislatures have determined that towns or cities have the right to ban oil or gas drilling within their borders. API members lost these battles on their home turf. Now they are trying to deny those rights in states where they want to open up large-scale oil and gas development. Towns that want to ban drilling and fracking shouldn’t have to worry about facing off in court against API, the most powerful lobbying group in the country. Will you tell the American Petroleum Institute to back off of communities that don’t want fracking and stop joining legal challenges against them? Sign the petition to support small towns standing up to the oil and gas industry.214 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Kathleen Sutcliffe, Earthjustice

Wounded Knee Massacre SiteThere is presently a 40 acre parcel of land that is part of the Wounded Knee Massacre for sale. I have written to President Obama at whitehouse.gov about this matter. My feeling is that the site should be made an American Historical Site by the U.S. government.72 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Rodney Ford

BiodieselThe Environmental Science class at Mead Hall Episcopal School has been researching the benefits and use of Biodiesel fuel in the Aiken County School District. If all of the buses in our school district used Biodiesel fuel we would not only cut gas costs but we would also be using a cleaner way of transportation. This petition will help us to show the South Carolina the number of people who support and would like to reinstate the use of Biodiesel fuel.5 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Courtney Law

Oppose Mountain Top Removal in MaineEnsure the passage of LD 1059, "An Act To Protect Maine's Environment and Natural Resources Jeopardized by Mining." In the spring of 2012, LD 1853 was passed in Maine, legalizing mountaintop removal via open pit mining. LD 1059, which was considered by the Environment and Natural Resources Committee on April 29 and will be voted on in the next few weeks, is sponsored by Representative Ben Chipman of Portland. It will result in a full repeal of LD 1853. The protection of our natural resources and health requires passage of LD 1059. Protect California's Groundwater! We strongly urge Assemblyman Brian Dahle to support a ban on fracking in California. The BLM has already auctioned off 1,750 sq.miles for fracking and plans to auction off even more this May. Fracking has contaminated drinking water with extremely toxic chemicals all over the U.S., causing illness in humans and livestock, and rendering public and private land uninhabitable. Protect California's groundwater!736 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Susan McKinney

Stop a potential nuclear disaster in Orange CountySan Onofre Whistleblower Cites "Potentially Catastrophic" Design Flaw with nuclear power plant. Inside source tells local news channel that cracked generator pipes at nuclear power plant could cause a full or partial meltdown. A former safety engineer with the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station is blowing the whistle on a "potentially catastrophic problem" at the currently offline Southern California Edison plan. According to a report by San Diego's Channel 10 News, the unnamed source—who has 25 years working in the field of nuclear safety—said that a faulty redesign of the plant's steam generators has put the system at risk of a "full or partial meltdown." "There is something grossly wrong," he told the news station. Since Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) undertook a redesign of the generators in 2010 and 2011, the tubes that carry scalding water and steam from the generator have been crashing into one another creating cracks and "unprecedented tube failure." Of 19,400 tubes, a Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) report found more than 17 percent were damaged. Dr. Joe Hopenfeld, a former employee of the NRC, explained to Channel 10 that "the worst case scenario is a main steam line break," which could be caused by tubes cracking, the tube walls thinning or metal fatigue. Both the unnamed safety engineer and Hopenfeld agree that if such a thing occurs, "there is potential for the reactor core to overheat—which could mean a full or partial meltdown." "Many tubes, and I don't know how many, have exhausted their fatigue life—they have no fatigue life left," Hopenfeld added. "As far as I'm concerned, it's a very serious risk." Earlier this month, Southern California Edison announced intentions to fire up the plant, after nearly a year spent offline, by June 1. Though the NRC has not committed to meet their target date, they are expected to make a decision about the possible restart within the coming weeks. Both the anonymous source and Hopenfeld said that "no one can predict what will happen if the plant restarts." "If an accident like this happens, (an) emergency plan is not geared to handle such a public safety devastation," added the inside source. "Those things have never been practiced or demonstrated in a drill scenario."18 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Bryce Walker
