When a politician wins an election, he or she is allowed to draw their own districts as a tactic to ensure their own re-election. A politician should not be allowed to choose their voters. Rather, the voters should be allowed to choose their representative. By utilizing a nonpartisan committee, we can end this practice so that districts are straightforward and represent the needs of the community rather than a political party.

I received an email from the White House asking for signatures for Trump's petition to show support for Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court. The White House website has this petition highlighted uppermost on the site. I created a petition there for the opposition view. However, the government site accepts signatures for my petition, but does not count them! This is an example of the authoritarian tactics American citizens are now facing. I am asking MoveOn members to help counter the lies and misrepresentations coming from the administration on the levels of support for right-wing leaning nominations, especially for the Supreme Court, by signing this petition.

House Republicans want to eliminate the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) -- and we can’t let that happen. The EAC’s job is to ensure our election infrastructure meets the highest standards for security and usability. They work with state officials to help them meet these standards, and gather information about the best ways to ensure that every eligible voter can have their vote counted. With still-unanswered questions about the influence of Russian hacking on the 2016 election, now is the worst possible time to throw out these critical safeguards. That’s why we we can’t let Republicans gut this critical commission. Congress created the EAC when it passed the Help America Vote Act in 2002 -- a package of reforms to improve voting systems and voter access in the wake of the 2000 election. We’ve made a lot of progress since then, but there’s still more work to do -- gutting this agency now would be the wrong move. Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina refuses to hold town halls with the public, thus allowing him to avoid his constituents and their questions. We the people of North Carolina deserve a Senator who will hear us out and be willing to speak with us about his positions and votes. Repeated requests to his staff to hold town halls are met with derision and dismissal. In response to constituent Kim Y's request for a town hall, Senator Burr's Chief of Staff, Dean Meyers, replied, "No, I will not submit a request for a town hall meeting to the senator. If you have concerns, let me know about them and I will pass them along to the senator. No, I do not need your contact information, because we are not going to meet with you. If you are frustrated, that's YOUR frustration and I cannot help you with that. No, the senator will not have a town hall forum. No, I will not request one." Senator Burr claims to be a public servant, but refuses even to meet with the public he represents. He has said this is his final term in office, meaning constituents won't even be able to hold him accountable at the ballot box. By not being accessible to constituents, Senator Burr has basically indicated he will not be held accountable for his votes for the next six years. What is Senator Burr afraid of? We deserve a town hall!

Dear Mr. President, Your Muslim ban punishes refugees who have employed more courage than most of us can possibly imagine. This includes a five year old boy who you had detained in a room without his parents for “extreme vetting." We the People demand “extreme vetting” of your tax returns. If “extreme vetting” is good enough for a five year old child to be kidnapped, it is a good enough for the President of the United States of America who issued such a kidnapping. The Constitution suffers when politicians refuse to do their constitutional duties. We are all going to be affected by the treachery of Senate Republicans in not putting Merrick Garland to a vote last year. Garland's name, to my knowledge, has never been withdrawn from consideration, so why not vote for him as a protest?

He literally doesn't know how the three branches of government work.

Over the past several weeks I have been watching Trump and all the unspeakably un-American and now unconstitutional things he's doing. Now there are calls for impeachment and investigation of all the ways he is likely benefiting personally from his Presidency. Which is awesome and we may get there. However, I've also been watching Mike Pence. What I'm noticing scares me because he is biding his time. He is staying out of the chaos and not engaging or responding to DJT's clearly impeachable acts / behavior; not talking to the media or engaging in media-bashing to remain UNimpeachable. Mike Pence should scare everyone because he is a homophobe and a racist hiding behind an ultra-conservative, "Christian" exterior. This man is dead set on walking back women's rights, voting rights and equal rights. And NO ONE is paying attention. He was a destructive force in this state, which I cannot even say enough , , , or loudly enough- and if Trump is impeached or resigns (voluntarily or otherwise) Mike Pence is next in line. I hope everyone in the media continues the great work in exposing DJT, and that eventually we can send him back to his delusional reality...fingers crossed - but I'm begging someone, ANYone- please start digging into Pence. He needs to be exposed and forced to come out of the shadows instead of being allowed to wait his turn patiently.
