• Citizens for H.R. 2286: MOMS Act of the 21st Century
H.R. 2286: MOMS Act provides comprehensive solutions, including a national consumer education campaign, so that families can make more informed decisions; federal research and national databasing of the most current, scientifically supported best practices; and improved education for maternity care professionals across the disciplines. It will also help to open up access to proven safer, less expensive options for maternity care, including birth centers (with a 6% national C-section rate), professional labor support (shown to decrease the incidence of Cesarean by 28%), and appropriate midwifery led care. The cost savings – including to taxpayers, who pay for about half of all U.S. births – are enormous: around $5 billion each year by cutting the national Cesarean rate in half, to the safer levels suggested by the World Health Organization and other health organizations! I urge you to support and cosponsor H.R. 2286 for all our families. Let’s end this maternity care crisis!

  • Dr. Diane Davis: Support Mental Health Counselors under Medicaid Act
I am a New York State Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). The current exclusion of LMHC's from treating Medicaid beneficiaries results in denial of vital mental health services for those in need. With the rise of adolescence and young adult crime and psychological problems, many beneficiaries suffer with a lack of mental health providers in their communities for treatment accessibility. Some beneficiaries are fortunate and find Medicaid eligible providers in their communities; many never receive needed care. LMHC represents over 40% of todays NYC licensed practitioners. Unfortunately, Medicaid has not been modernized to recognize our essential role in today's health delivery system. Our adolescence and young adult psychological problems should be our top priority, and Medicaid should utilize LMHC's to treat mental health disorders before they exacerbate into more serious mental disorders. Our children are suffering with mental health risk behaviors and harming others. Many children are being killed by their peers who have mental disorders. There needs to be more interventions to help these individuals manage these risk behaviors and psychological problems.

  • NC to Congress: Fix Hobby Lobby
The Supreme Court ruled in the Hobby Lobby decision that closely held corporations can refuse to offer contraceptive coverage to their workers on religious grounds, siding with two businesses who say they’re morally opposed to certain types of birth control. President Obama has called for Congress to remedy the situation by passing new legislation. Congress needs to take action to solve this problem that’s been created by the Hobby Lobby decision. Why? 99 percent of U.S. women who use contraception at some point in their lives. As a result, unintended pregnancies have become increasingly concentrated among poor women who lack access to birth control. Congress must act to restore insurance coverage of contraception benefits after Hobby Lobby’s big win in the Supreme Court. Call on our North Carolina representatives to be leaders on this issue. Access to contraceptives is an incredibly important issue for low-income women. The unintended pregnancy rate for women living below the poverty level is more than five times as high as the rate for the women in the highest income level. The Supreme Court created this problem, but Congress can fix it. The health of millions of American families hangs in the balance.

  • 7-8 Yrs is Too Long to Wait for a Diagnosis of a Disease
I care for two grandchildren with rare diseases. The length of the diagnostic process is testimony to the lack of knowledge that exists within the field of medicine regarding rare disorders; the lack of a diagnosis is a major roadblock to identifying the number of people affected, the manner in which they are affected and ultimately stymies science that secures cures and treatments.

  • Better nutrition for kids in hospitals
Our goal is to make nutrition healthier for kids beyond the issues of obesity and school lunches and to expand into the hospital setting. We have firsthand experience with the food in hospitals as we have been in and out with our 11 year old son who has been recently diagnosed with lymphoma. We would like Michigan to be a role model for other states and take this issue across the country!

  • Get Veterans Care Now using Existing Medicare System
I am a veteran and the last hospital and doctor I want to go to is a veterans hospital and doctor. Would you want to? Why should veterans be forced to go to obsolete hospitals? Why shouldn't they have a right to choose? Why would we make our veterans wait months to be diagnosed or treated? You wouldn't tolerate it. It's not right and it's not what was intended when the Veterans Hospitals were established. The veterans were supposed to get the best doctors and hospitals, not the worst. This idea of using a well-established, proven system makes common sense and it is ready to roll NOW. No years of development. No kinks to work out. Let's get it done now ...not 5 years from now!

  • Help Children with Special Needs and/or Disabilities Get the Medical Coverage They Need!!
My son Jacob has been diagnosed with extreme anxiety most likely due to Atypical Autism (PDD-NOS), ADD and/or Tic Disorder. He has been a "special needs" child since he was about 3 years old. Our medical insurance companies, Emblem Health and Blue Cross Blue Shield, have both denied him coverage for I.V. Sedation in the hospital to get his cavities fixed (2 cavities being really bad now). Her has been to 3 different pediatric dentists, with more than 7 office visits, has been under the nitrous oxide, and no one has been able to complete any of the dental procedures, due to my son's extreme anxiety, and also due to his sensory processing disorder, which is a symptom of the PDD-NOS. It has been strongly suggested not only by his pediatric dentists, but by his behaviorist and pediatrician as well, that for my son's best interest he should be put under I.V. sedation in an outpatient room in a hospital in order to complete all of the dental work that needs to be done! I think that all medical insurance companies should be mandated to cover this, so that my son isn't scarred for life by being held down in a dental jacket while he screams in a dental chair, scared out of his mind!! Please help me by signing this petition! I am sure there are a lot of mothers going trough this, and who cannot afford a $10,000 hospital bill! If I cannot help my child, I hope to help other families going through the same situation.
