• Tell Secretary Kelly: Extend Immigration Protections For Haitian Families Now!
Department of Homeland Security Secretary, John Kelly, has until Tuesday, May 23, to renew an immigration program that shields thousands of Haitians from deportation. Known as Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, the program currently allows some 50,000 Haitians to work in the United States while keeping them safe from Donald Trump's deportation force. If Secretary Kelly does not renew TPS for Haitian families, then thousands of families would be forced to return to a country that is dealing with a severe food crisis and the aftermath of two major earthquakes. We cannot allow Secretary Kelly and Donald Trump to continue to terrorize immigrant communities across the United States! Please join me in demanding that Secretary Kelly take immediate action and renew Temporary Protected Status to Haitians.

County Executive Steve Schuh reiterated his eagerness to enroll Anne Arundel County into the failed 287g program this week. His move to utilize County funds to target immigrant and communities of color is a step in the wrong direction. Help us tell the County Executive to do the right thing and withdraw the application.

  • Demand Sanctuary City & Sanctuary County in CD-10
It's time to demand that our elected officials protect the Immigrants within our community. Immigrants pay over 35 million in taxes in Stanislaus county on a yearly basis yet have no representation in local offices. American Independence was justified through the motto "no Taxation without representation" yet today that same principle still applies. We pay our fare share of taxes, it's time for our representatives to represent Immigrants once and foreall.

  • ICE Arrested Wilmer Without a Warrant, Broke His Arm, and then Put Him in Solitary Confinement. S...
On May Day, Wilmer's family announced a lawsuit against Trump's deportation agency, ICE, and the Chicago police department for violating his civil rights. In retaliation, we got notice that Wilmer has been placed in isolation as punishment "for placing a towel over his head to block off the light." On Monday, March 27th, ICE agents targeted Wilmer based on Chicago police mysteriously and unknowingly adding him to a "gang database." They threw him to the ground, breaking his arm, and adding to injuries that he had suffered earlier this year, leaving him half paralyzed, when he was a bystander in a drive-by shooting. When ICE officials arrived at Wilmer's home they did not identify themselves as ICE, instead calling themselves detectives and pretending to be looking for a suspect named "Rubio." Wilmer's wife, Celene, asked the agents to leave as her husband was not in any position to see them. As soon as she began to open the door, agents pushed her and made their way into the home and which point they proceeded to apprehend Wilmer. Wilmer migrated from Guatemala to the United States in 2006 and was deported that same year as result of an ICE raid that took place in his workplace in 2006. Shortly after being deported, Wilmer returned to the United States and has since been living here. Wilmer is a part of a loving family; his two children are both US citizens and he is the main provider for his household. Please sign on to support Wilmer. He is being punished for standing up for his rights and ICE is attempting to place him in expedited proceedings because of his 2006 deportation. We will not stop until ICE is dismantled and families cease to be detained and torn apart by divisive and dehumanizing policies.

  • ICE is Detaining A Georgia Civil Rights Leader. Sign to Release Him!
On April 17th the Houston County Sheriff pulled over a long-time civil rights leader in Georgia, Eleazar Muñoz Hernandez, supposedly for running a red light. He arrested Eleazar for driving without a license and transferred him to Trump's deportation agents who now have him detained in Stewart detention center. Eleazar has been living in the United States since 2002. He has been living with his wife and son in Warner Robbins for the last 12 years. Since 2010, he has been a leader in the Warner Robbins comité popular, educating neighbors about their rights and mobilizing for immigrant rights events. We are asking Secretary Kelly for his immediate release so that he can be reunited with his wife and son and return to his volunteer work as a leader in his community. Eleazar should not be punished for not having a driver's license that the State of Georgia will not give him; he needs to work in order to provide for his family and driving is very necessary in Georgia, especially in rural parts. Driving while undocumented should not be criminalized. Please sign this petition so that Eleazar can be released and reunited with his 16-year-old son and wife.

  • Orange County Board of Supervisors: say NO to more ICE beds at Theo Lacy Facility and end the con...
Repeatedly, horror stories about conditions for immigrants detained at Theo Lacy Facility have been exposed through stakeholder inspections and complaints submitted to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties by brave, directly-impacted persons, with detailed accountsof physical abuse, threats, retaliation and gravely inadequate medical care. A recent inspection by DHS’ own Office of Inspector General found showers full of “trash, mildew, and mold” and that the facility was serving “slimy, foul-smelling lunch meat” that appeared to be spoiled. Despite retaliation, conditions inside the facility are so dire that immigrants detained at Theo Lacy have gone on hunger strike twice in the last year and a half. The Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) has continuously proven to be unfit to detain anyone; no one should have to suffer under these conditions. It is unconscionable that either ICE or OCSD are even considering an expansion when serious life-threatening problems are wide-spread and continue unaddressed inside the facility. Because of these horrific conditions, and the continued risk of detention and deportation for our families and community members, we demand that Orange County Board of Supervisors say NO to an increase to ICE bed spaces and terminate the contract with ICE at Theo Lacy Facility.

  • NOT Another Brick in the Wall
I'm genuinely fed up with these short term "solutions" to long term problems. People come to America for the opportunity to be safe and free. They leave their homes because whatever they are leaving behind is way worse than being poverty stricken in America. That says a lot about our nation as a whole and is why I am proud to be American, why we all should be! Unfortunately I think we are using Mexico as scapegoat for our own problems and proposing to waste a ton of money on something that won't change a damnthing. If you build a wall we will still have addicts, criminals and people on welfare. Banning immigrants and building walls won't change that. Changing our perspective will. WHY are there so many opioid addicts? WHAT is going on with Mexico that people want to leave? WHY did that criminal make that choice? HOW could it have been prevented? Look at the big picture! I have seen plenty of media regarding the proposed expansion of the wall, but nothing yet about removing the wall. Let's put people to work removing the border completely.

  • Governor Abbott: Veto SB 4—Don't turn Texas police into Trump's deportation force
Texas Governor Greg Abbott plans to sign SB 4—the most dangerous anti-immigration bill in the country—into law in the coming days. It could become law, unless we speak out and fight this bill every step of the way. SB 4 obligates local law enforcement to detain people (even unlawfully) for the federal government, and it prohibits localities from imposing restrictions on collaboration with ICE. The bill even criminalizes local elected officials, like me, who stand up for our communities. But most of all, this legislation would terrorize communities of color and turn our local police into Trump's deportation force. That's why I joined a group of clergy, elected officials, and communities in a staged sit-in at Gov. Abbott's office to oppose this legislation. I know how painful immigration raids are to our communities. During one of the ruthless immigration raids that hit Austin earlier this year, I sat in a constituent's living room. Earlier that day, immigration officers had knocked on this family's door. The children were confused, terrorized, and thought they were going to lose their parent. That is a trauma that will stay with them. Now Republican politicians have decided they want our children to experience this terror and trauma every time they see a police officer. But today's action at the governor's office—and your signature on this petition—is proof that many of us across Texas and the country are declaring that we refuse to betray our community. We will fight this legislation in the courts, in our halls of government, and by organizing in our communities. It will take all of us standing up and speaking to stop this legislation and protect our communities. I hope you’ll work with us to stop Senate Bill 4, because we need you.

  • Stop the deportation of Luis Barrios, father of four, for a broken taillight
**UPDATE: Thanks to the power of people like you, Luis Barrios got news that ICE had agreed to put his deportation on hold for 2 years as of May 12th. VICTORY!!** Here's the petition~ Luis Barrios, 52, is a homeowner who lives in Derby, Connecticut, with his four children. He was pulled over for having a broken tail light in 2011, which brought him in contact with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Luis has never been arrested and has no criminal record. Luis has held a steady job. Luis has a family. Luis should not be deported. Luis was told to self deport by May 4th, or he would be taken into custody. Largely due to the groundswell of support from activists, petitioners, and the 3 members of Congress, ICE granted a 30 day stay to Luis Barrios on May 3rd - hours before he was to board a plane. Luis now faces self-deportation on June 3rd. According to Luis's daughter, her father is in danger in his country of origin, Guatemala, from which he fled more than 25 years ago. Luis's brother was murdered in Guatemala, and Luis fears what will happen if he is forced to return. His attorney says that he did seek asylum in the '90s, but an address mix-up led him to miss a court date, and his request was removed. Her hope is that the Department of Homeland Security will stop the deportation order and reconsider Luis’s case for asylum. Representative Rosa DeLauro, who represents the district where Luis and his family live, wrote a letter of support for Luis. Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal wrote a joint letter and have made public statements in support of Luis. Now it's up to us. Stand with Luis and his family and stop this unjust deportation.
