• First Black VP being mistreated at MSU, plus...
As a concerned citizen of Springfield, MO and a member of the black community, I am writing to call attention to the gross and racist treatment being hurled at Dr. Ken Coopwood, the first black VP and senior expert on diversity hired in the history of Missouri State University and our city of Springfield. Other VPs on campus, who happen to be white, earn more in salary and have better funded divisions. I have been in Springfield for over 5 years, and I met Dr. Coopwood 2 years ago at a community event sponsored by the Baha'i Faith organization. I became familiar with his work and later attended several visits to his division suite on campus over several months. Having more insight into Dr. Coopwood’s work and his ability to serve a historically hostile community, I can share news of how he has endured over recent years. I know that of late, Dr. Coopwood’s division was “repurposed” for the sake of doing higher level activity, e.g. climate study, and diversity conference, but left internal units without leadership for the change these efforts should provoke. This repurposing was stated in the Springfield “News Leader” and it caused several diversity-related units to be left without the benefit of his expertise and leadership. However, I’ve learned through students and others in the community that, in fact, staff within Dr. Coopwood’s division have been despicable and hostile towards him, even created circumstances against him which made his leadership appear to be both faulty and unethical in an effort to gain favor with senior administration. I saw for myself, when asking about his division's budget and how his staff were being utilized, that his effort to develop his staff and expand the work of his division was not being supported in any way that proved the university was serious about diversity. In fact, it appears that Dr. Coopwood’s unit and his resources have been taken away to show favor to others at MSU who were known by the president before him. We need to find out the truth. I have spoken directly to Dr. Coopwood but he needs to protect his family and therefore can not respond in depth to my questions. Nonetheless, I am starting this petition to demand that the treatment afforded to Dr. Coopwood be revealed publicly and that he be allowed to use his talent to lead the community to better race relations and equitable distribution of resources. I have the support of MSU alums as well as community people who have worked directly with Dr. Coopwood. I will ask the MSU board to investigate Dr. Coopwood’s experience since arriving in Springfield and, if need be, move this petition forward to the attention of the Governor. We can not stand by and watch a man who brought his family to our community be racially profiled as incompetent, not-valued or of no consequence in transforming our community to a better place. If any of you have interacted with Dr. Coopwood in any way, then you would know what I mean. Please join me in holding the university accountable for its treatment of the first and only black executive since 1905.

  • Fair Elections Through Small Donor Matching
This is part of an on-going effort to get a small donor matching system in Chicago elections. Last February 80% of City voters said yes they support such a system. This would enable more ordinary citizens to run for office and promote fair elections.

  • Resignation of Clarence Sutton, Sr. from School Board
Removing parental school choices from District 1 is an agenda without a mandate. James Minyard certainly never promoted it. Parents deserve more options for our children, not fewer.

  • Protect New Mexico's Water Resources, Land, and Traditions
We are asking the people of New Mexico to take a firm stand and commit to the protection and preservation of precious water resources, land, and traditions in our state. New Mexico continues to face great social, political, and economic challenges. The entire Southwest region is experiencing one of the worst droughts in the last 1,000 year period. Precious water systems across the state continue to be strained due to increased developments and heightened demands. Because of this, water struggles have become the norm across communities in our state (e.g. the battle against the Santolina Master Plan, the fight against water pumping in San Augustin Plains, the Gila River diversion battle, etc.). As people in New Mexico, we recognize the importance of protecting and preserving sacred and deeply rooted traditions (such as acequias and farming) that rely on precious water resources and land. We also recognize the fact that the people from New Mexico have a profound spiritual connection to water and land that goes beyond an economic value. We are asking you to sign this petition so that we can send a strong message to developers, politicians, and other entities who pose threats to the sacred traditions and ways of life that are so meaningful to our New Mexican communities. By signing this petition we are making a pledge to commit to the protection and preservation of water resources and traditions in our beautiful state. This will require awareness and active participation in helping to protect water and land-based traditions. We also recognize the responsibility we have in maintaining and protecting water and land for future generations to enjoy. By signing this petition, we consciously state that we understand that without land, there is no subsistence; and without water, there is no life. I am signing this petition because I am committed to the protection and preservation of New Mexico's sacred water resources, land, and traditions. El agua es sagrada. Water is sacred.

  • KFC: Stop stealing from this Iraq War vet
Derrell Odom fought in Iraq and earned a Purple Heart serving our country. Now, he struggles to get by on the minimum wage pay he makes at KFC. Even worse: his bosses are stealing from him. Through illegal accounting tricks like shifting hours on paychecks to avoid paying overtime, the KFC franchise where Derrell works is keeping his wages down to bolster their bottom line. This KFC store needs to STOP stealing from Derrell now - and KFC needs to ensure that no employee ever has their wages stolen again at any store.

  • Tell the DC Public Service Commission: Reject the Backroom Bowser-Exelon Deal
In August, regulators at the DC Public Service Commission unanimously rejected the proposed merger between Pepco and Chicago-based energy giant Exelon. The commissioners said the deal was an inherent conflict of interest and would harm the city’s commitment to clean, renewable energy. Thousands of DC residents voiced their opposition to the merger and over half of DC's ANCs passed resolutions opposing the merger. But, despite this clear rejection by both regulators and the public, Mayor Muriel Bowser cut a backroom deal with Exelon. Now she’s trying to push this deeply flawed settlement, which addresses none of the core problems, through the PSC with an "expedited" process.

  • Stand with Hillary & Bernie: Demand more from Saudis & Turkey against ISIS
Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders may disagree on other things, but one thing they strongly agree on is that Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar and Kuwait must contribute much more to the struggle against ISIS. The Turkey-Syria border must be sealed against ISIS; Turkey must stop bombing anti-ISIS Kurdish fighters in Syria; terrorist financing from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait must be stopped. On November 19, Hillary Clinton said: [1] “The United States should also work with our Arab partners to get them more invested in the fight against ISIS...When it comes to terrorist financing, we have to go after the nodes that facilitate illicit trade and transactions...we have to place more obligations on countries to police their own banks...once and for all, the Saudis, the Qataris and others need to stop their citizens from directly funding extremist organizations as well as the schools and mosques around the world that have set too many young people on a path to radicalization...the Saudis have a multiple level of responsibilities, first and foremost, stopping their own citizens from continuing the financing for extremists...Saudi financing is still a major source of revenue for terrorist groups inside Syria, inside Iraq elsewhere...Turkey has been more focused on the Kurds than on countering ISIS...But the threat from ISIS cannot wait...we need to get Turkey to stop bombing Kurdish fighters in Syria who are battling ISIS, and become a full partner in our coalition efforts against ISIS.” On November 19 (the same day), Bernie Sanders said: [2] “A new and strong coalition of Western powers, Muslim nations, and countries like Russia must come together in a strongly coordinated way to combat ISIS, to seal the borders that fighters are currently flowing across, to share counter-terrorism intelligence, to turn off the spigot of terrorist financing, and to end support for exporting radical ideologies...countries in the region like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE...have contributed far too little in the fight against ISIS...Saudi Arabia has the 3rd largest defense budget in the world, yet instead of fighting ISIS they have focused more on a campaign to oust Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. Kuwait, a country whose ruling family was restored to power by U.S. troops after the first Gulf War, has been a well-known source of financing for ISIS and other violent extremists...Qatar will spend $200 billion on the 2022 World Cup...$200 billion on hosting a soccer event, yet very little to fight against ISIS. Worse still, it has been widely reported that the government has not been vigilant in stemming the flow of terrorist financing, and that Qatari individuals and organizations funnel money to some of the most extreme terrorist groups, including al Nusra and ISIS.” Urge President Obama and Congress to publicly demand that Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar and Kuwait do much more to contribute to the struggle against ISIS by signing our petition. • Petition to Improve School Lunch
We, the undersigned students and parents of Chicago Public Schools, want to prove that our school lunches are inadequate. Currently the school lunches are terrible. We are fed the same options every day, the food is either overcooked or undercooked, the portions are too small and the quality is poor. We urge our principal, the Chicago Board of Education, and Aramark to act now to allow us to open the lunchroom kiosk, have vending machines, off campus lunch, food delivery, and increased options, portion sizes, and quality in our school lunch. This is important because we eat 1/6th of our meals here annually, and many students refuse to eat it. By signing this petition, we demand that school lunches get better.
