• Don't Weaken Social Security
There are reports in the press suggesting that President Obama may be willing to reduce future cost of living adjustments for Social Security recipients as part of a "fiscal cliff" deal. The fact of the matter is that even the present basis for calculating adjustments does not keep up with inflation because of the disproportionate contribution of health care costs to their total expenditures. Reducing future adjustments would only make things worse.

  • LOWER CAR INSURANCE RATES
When moving to Detroit, my car insurance rate went through the roof! Since we are required to have car insurance, we shouldn't have to pay more because we have chosen to live in a specific location.

  • Ban the Sale of Guns Sold at Gun Shows
The tragedy in Newton began the necessary discussion of guns in this country. Background checks are currently one of the most effective tools we have when it comes to the sale of guns to people who are deemed responsible gun owners.

  • Give Gun Violent Victims the same access to politicians as gun lobbyists
The NRA and gun rights lobbyists have significantly more access to lawmakers because they are big donors. Gun violence victims and victims families deserve equal access. As we have seen in the past, (with energy regulations), those who have the most to gain financially from legislation are the same one ones who can make the most political contributions. Money leads to access. Gun violence victims deserve to be heard.

  • Stop Cuts to Hospice, Mental Health in LA
The state of Louisiana is considering a budget that would eliminate all Hospice care to people covered by Medicaid and ending a program that largely uses federal welfare dollars to provide unique mental health treatment to very young children. More than 5,800 people received Hospice care through Medicaid in 2012. Eliminating the Early Childhood Supports and Services program will save the state only $134,000 for a program which receives a $2.7 million federal match.
