Let's be clear. With the magnitude of the oncoming climate crisis it's no longer sufficient to have a single token environmental question that 2020 candidates get to brush off with a soundbite. We need an entire debate on environmental policies. The global and US Youth Climate Strike's success and interest in environmental policies such as the Green New Deal resolution are signs that the public wants governmental action on the issue of climate change. As we see increasing domestic and global devastation from fires, floods, and everything in between, we need to be discussing environmental policy much more, therefore we are calling for a debate or forum around concrete solutions. We're calling on all 2020 Democratic candidates to take part in a debate or forum around environmental issues. The Washington Post reported that a forum will occur October of 2019 by the Human Rights Campaign and UCLA School of Public Affairs around LGBTQ issues where "Democratic presidential candidates will be invited to participate in a forum focused exclusively on LGBT policies ... they will discuss topics related to hate crimes, bullying and transgender rights." That's an excellent idea and an inspiration for our own organizing. Let's ensure environmental issues from climate change, access to clean water, environmental racism, and everything in between that are disproportionately impacting people of color and working class folks are given the serious attention they deserve. Let's be sure we hear how candidates plan to stop companies accountable for polluting our water and air and what they think about opening up federal land to fracking, drilling, and trophy hunting. Let's have an open mind as they discuss the ways we can shift to renewable energy while keeping the economy and jobs secure. Sign our petition and let's show all the 2020 candidates, the media, and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) that young people can lead as the catalyst for such important discussions that affect every single one of us. I think a slushie machine should be added to Cleveland State University's Campus. Slushies are a popular drink for my generation. Going to Cleveland for school makes it hard to get these drinks we all love. We have to leave the safety of our campus and travel outside into the scary city world. If a machine was added on campus it could make money for the university and keep the students safe.

Mexico has already indicated that they are considering joining the International Marine Organization's (IMO) Marpol Annex VI Emission Control Area (ECA). Canada and the USA are part of the ECA. If Mexico does not join the ECA, it would discounts American ports’ competitive edge with respect to Mexico, as it will be less expensive for ships to deliver to Mexican Ports and to buy fuel from Mexico, and encourage trans-Pacific shipping through Mexico. Marpol will act to clean the air in the U.S., but if Chinese ships just move delivery to the deep water port in Ensenada, 70 miles south of San Diego, the pollution in the area will continue, and trade, including sales of oil, will just be routed through Mexico. Currently most ships us 3.5% sulfur bunker oil. It is estimated that 16 supertankers using this fuel create as much sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere as all 800,000,000 cars in the world combined. There are 100,000 ships using bunker fuel. The new international standard will lower the amount of sulfur in Marine Oil by 7 times to 0.5%, however, the ECA areas use 0.1%. By having all of North America part of the ECA, it greatly encourages all shipping in the north Pacific to use use the cleaner, 0.1% sulfur Marine oil in ships. Thus, having Mexico participate, helps shift the cost of global air quality clean-up back onto China, a huge contributor of air pollution at no additional cost to the U.S. tax payer. The USMCA (America First - Canada last) can allow Mexico a couple of years to get onboard (shipping pun), since the rules go into effect on January 2020, but it should be done as soon as possible. The agreement should be done now, as this is the only time that the Senate is likely to have leverage over the trade agreement.

The HSP class of 2020 is upset that the traditional Senior Rome trip has been aligned with Spring Break, when it is normally done towards the end of the year. The trip has traditionally signified the end of the senior class' time at Holy Spirit Prep and this change deprives the trip of this feeling. It also deprives the class of 2020 of their senior year spring break. If the dates of this trip are not changed, many of the members of the class of 2020 have stated they will not be attending said trip, and there is a fear that a long standing tradition may not take place at all.

I've been a resident of the Santa Cruz Mountains for 22 years. My wife, two children and I are completely dependent upon Highway 17 for work, school, and daily necessities; it is a fundamental part of our daily routine. While excessive traffic congestion and road closures occur frequently, it is especially worrisome during wildfire season, coupled with beach traffic, when we fear our ability to escape. The "Camp Fire" of last year should serve as an abject lesson of the importance of navigable escape routes.
