Miami-Dade County is one of the most incredibly diverse counties in the country, and home to more than 1.5 million Spanish speakers and more than 100,000 Haitian Creole speakers. Despite this, only a minority of schools have a true bilingual education program, the best current example being the Elementary Bilingual School Organization, which consists of just seven schools. In an effort to promote true bilingualism amongst Miami-Dade students, which has been proven to have distinct cognitive benefits, we are asking the elected officials of Miami-Dade County, including county commissioners and school board officials, to consider, revise and adopt a bill that we have drafted to introduce a standardized program of bilingual education across all Miami-Dade public schools. Running a leaf blower for 30 minutes creates more emissions than driving a F-150 pickup truck 3800 miles. About one-third of the gasoline that goes into this sort of engine is spewed out, unburned, in an aerosol mixed with oil in the exhaust. Those emissions—plus all the other fine-particulate crap that the blowers kick up—constitute a public health hazard for anyone in the vicinity. A gas blower at full cry can exceed a 100 decibels for the operator (OSHA requires hearing protections at 85), and it carries for hundreds of feet in every direction, irritating all who dwell therein. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health who undertook a survey of more than 1,000 Boston-area residents and made hundreds of ambient sound readings to come up with her comprehensive 2016 Greater Boston Noise Report. Leaf blowers emerged as prime offenders in this document, particularly in the area’s outlying suburbs.

As someone who has autism himself, I firmly believe that the autistic community could use a prominent organization that will help them get a better standing in society. Seeing as how Autism Speaks sanctioned the creation of a PSA that personifies autism as the Grim Reaper, along with a documentary in which they encouraged parents to stop giving their autistic kids their medications so that they can film "how they really act," this is not an organization that's interesting in doing such a thing.

The Wisconsin Republican-held legislature passed a law limiting the incoming Governor and Attorney Generals powers in an effort to reverse their devastating midterm loss. I cannot stand by and watch America descend into legislation without representation. The GOP believes the voters of Wisconsin do not care. We are all affected by Donald Trump's statements about the murder of Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi Arabia's head of government and his agents. His amoral lies and equivocations are done in our name.

The Wisconsin Republicans are attempting to sabotage the powers of the elected Democratic governor. Legislation would remove or limit decision making powers concerning public welfare, ongoing contract and legal negotiations, voting rights and appointing people to government posts.. The DC Commission for Arts and Humanities should remain independent from the Office of the Mayor. It is alarming that the Mayor's office wants to consolidate power considering it's recent flirtation with censorship. There is a new governor in the state and we would like him to know that we support Commissioner Scheff. He has been a champion for our individuals with ID/D and we would like to see him remain the DDS Commissioner.

Heroism is defined as great bravery. Heroes are individuals who have empathy and compassion for others. The late Emantic Bradford Jr., a 21-year-old African American male who friends and family described as a good, considerate, fun-loving young man that cared for his father when he was ill, displayed those characteristics of a hero. Emantic Bradford Jr. graduated from a Catholic high school in Birmingham, Alabama and later joined the U.S. Army. Emantic was administratively separated in August of 2018 and was awarded a specialty certification. After having Thanksgiving dinner with his family, Emantic decided to go to the Riverchase Galleria mall to do some shopping. While at the mall, gunfire erupted. Emantic who legally owned a firearm and had absolutely nothing to do with the mall shooting, was then unjustly murdered by a Hoover police officer who responded to the scene. From everything we know about Emantic Bradford Jr. and by all accounts, Emantic was a ‘good guy with a gun,’ that night reacting to a chaotic scene to not only save himself, but save the lives of others as well. Unfortunately, as is all too common in our society, African Americans are not protected by gun rights and are not viewed as ‘good guys, or good people with guns.’ Incredulously, following Emantic’s murder, the officer who murdered him was described as a hero, while Emantic’s character was assassinated. This officer was lauded, while not being publically identified, as Emantic was identified as being a criminal responsible for the mall shooting. Thanks to the hard work of Emantic’s family and local activists, the world now knows the truth. An independent autopsy found that Emantic "EJ" Bradford Jr was shot three times from behind during the incident in the mall. Emantic was shot in the head, neck and lower back, all from behind. The report concluded that the "manner of death is homicide." Based on facts and not systemic bigotry that often leads to controlled narratives and stereotypes that criminalize our Black men and women, the responding officer was no hero. The responding officer was a ‘coward,’ who shot a real hero in the back! Based on these facts, we, the concerned public, demand that the city of Hoover Alabama, Hoover Alabama media, and the Hoover police department, all who spent time and energy, assassinating the character of Emantic Bradford Jr., while praising his murderer, keep that same energy and invest time in officially recognizing Emantic Bradford Jr. as a hero, awarding him posthumously, while pursuing justice for his murder. If we are truly to be a nation that believes in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, while holding truths to be self-evident that ‘all men are created equal,’ we must be purposefully in engaging in the work required to turn theory into practice as based on what happened to Emantic Bradford Jr. and what continues to happen across the country, nothing is self-evident about equality.
