Tell Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell to veto proposed voter ID lawsPartisan extremists in the General Assembly have just rammed through legislation designed to make it harder for Virginians to vote. The proposed legislation does nothing to combat voter fraud and is nothing more than an attempt to suppress voter turnout. These efforts need to be stopped. Newspapers across the Commonwealth have berated the Republicans’ attack on voting rights as "a throwback to the Jim Crow era," "an impediment to voting that would adversely affect poor, elderly and minority voters," and "a burden on citizens who are homebound, disabled, deployed in the military, away at college or otherwise unable to vote in person." These proposed laws would limit the forms of acceptable voter identification, adding obstacles for many voters. Governor McDonnell himself has acknowledged that the current system works. We should not make it more difficult for people to vote.5,390 of 6,000 SignaturesCreated by Aneesh Chopra

Tell the CA Legislature: "End Tax Exempt Status for Anti-Gay Boy Scouts of America"Please join me in asking the California Legislature to pass SB 323, ending tax breaks for youth groups like Boy Scouts of America that discriminate against members based on their sexual orientation. I grew up in the Boy Scout tradition. I started out as a Cub Scout, transitioned through Webelos, and ended my Boy Scout journey as a Life Scout, one rank below Eagle. My closest friends were other scouts. Scouting stands for the finest qualities of humanity: self-reliance, creativity, and an appreciation of nature. Most of all, we were taught how to act as responsible, respectful citizens. This is why the Boy Scouts’ continued policy of excluding members based on their sexual orientation is so upsetting to me. It flies in the face of the very values that the scouting tradition professes to teach. As a straight ally, I can't sit idle while the current leaders of the Boy Scouts disgrace this once-proud American institution with their personal bigotry. Boy Scouts of America needs to do the right thing and change their policy to allow openly gay members. Right now, SB 323, sponsored by Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Los Angeles) aims to give the Boy Scouts a nudge in the right direction by eliminating tax exemptions for groups that practice discrimination. Please ask the California Legislature to help pass SB 323. California should lead on this issue if Congress won’t. Ending this tax break is the right thing to do, for the Boy Scouts and any other youth group in California which discriminates against members based on sexual orientation.10,563 of 15,000 SignaturesCreated by Eddie Kurtz

Label GMO FoodsAs any consumer, we have a right to know what we are purchasing and in regards to food, we have a right to know what we are feeding our bodies. Currently there is not enough long term research proving GMO is healthy or safe and there have been cases where people cannot eat GMO because it makes them sick. They, along with us all, have the right and need to know what foods contain GMO's to avoid getting sick.18 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Amanda Burge

Tell Ancestry.com Their Commercial Is Offensive to Black AmericansAncestry.com created a commercial where a man says "I was afraid as an African American, I knew where my family history might end up...my grandfather was born a slave but died a business man." The implication here is that ancestors of slaves should be embarrassed of this history. (Watch commercial here: http://youtu.be/WQQ9gjBby10). This commercial is insensitive, and the implication that anyone should be ashamed of their families' past is unacceptable. Slavery, poverty and struggle are a part of our history as Americans. Ancestry.com needs to pull this commercial from the air. This method of marketing is offensive.39 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Crystal Page

No special treatment for concealed weapons permit holdersOn Tuesday, February 19th, the Maine Legislature will take up an "emergency" measure exempting concealed weapons permit holders from our Freedom of Access Act (FOAA). This means that for 60 days, the public will not be able to know who possesses a concealed carry permit. The Legislature will likely take up a permanent measure in the coming weeks, but by then a dangerous precedent will have been set. The emergency bill will not be given a hearing, and the public will not be invited to comment. Maine's Freedom of Access law covers a whole range of information, from hunting and fishing licenses to emergency dispatch records. It's based on the premise that government shouldn't be doing business in secret. It allows only very limited exceptions - to people such as recipients of protection orders - who might be in danger if their private information got into the wrong hands. Concealed weapons permit holders are not in danger and do not need special protections that the rest of us do not have. Please join us in asking the Legislature to apply our Freedom of Access Law to all citizens equally. Nashville Metro Officer Shaun Heath: Replace the Home You Destroyed and ApologizeA few weeks ago in Nashville, a group of Metro police officers made a sweep on a homeless camp on one of the coldest nights of the year. One man in particular was cited for trespassing, and when he returned to the camp, he found that his tent had been slashed open with a knife... by one of the officers! "My tent was slashed. I mean, it looked like Freddy Krueger had come through there and cut it up. Brand new tent. I hadn't had it two weeks. $150 dollar tent, and they're not easy for me to come by being homeless, you know." The man had no choice but to sleep in what was left of his home, and woke up under a half inch of snow. Metro Police Officer Shaun Heath admitted what he did and has since been demoted and taken off the streets pending investigation. "This was one officer doing something that he shouldn't have done. It should not have happened, there's no question about that. He realizes that. He realizes that he was wrong in what he did," said Metro Police Cmdr. Marlene Pardue, of the West Precinct. The homeless man, now relocated and using a borrowed tent, is not asking for a new tent or the officer's job. He simply wants an apology and mutual respect. I feel that if Officer Shaun Heath wants to continue to "protect and serve" the people of Nashville, he should replace the home he destroyed and make a formal, public apology.227 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Tripp Hewell

Decriminalize AutismMy adult son is autistic. Doctors and hospitals refuse him care and attempt to redirect us to institutional care. Every time he is in the emergency room, doctors want him sent to a state psycniatric hospital that has a history of deaths, not from natural causes. If I agreed to have him sent, he would be shackled and transported in a sheriff's car. I just called to have him transported to the ER, because he appeared to become increasingly agitated with a medication change. The police came with the paramedics and roughed him up. It must stop. We have to come up with humane ways to deal with mental handicaps. If the handicapped are not discriminated against and receive appropriate medical care, they are less likely to need crisis treatments.17 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Gayle Adcock
