If you have kids in high school, they’ve probably read Orwell’s 1984. But now, they’ll get the chance to live in a real-world tech dystopia. Tech startups are quietly selling facial recognition services to high schools across the country. And the potential danger for students, especially students of color, is too troubling to just sit idly by. Facial recognition in schools also gives administrators the unprecedented ability to track and monitor students in real time, during some of the most formative years of their lives. What’s worse: as minors, students may not have any legal recourse to protect themselves from the racial flaws within facial recognition systems.

More importantly, the Mayor of Durham, Hon. Steve Schewel, has already verbally expressed his understanding, agreement and support for the establishment of such community Facility during his visit on January 15th, 2020. In just a few short years we have had a population growth spurt which has tripled the size of the North section of the City due to aggressive residential Real Estate Development. However, the children and seniors of these tens of thousands of new Residents have no Community Recreational Facility and therefore play in the street which is unsafe, unnecessary and unacceptable.

Chicago House and Social Service agency serves some of the most marginalized populations in Chicago. Communities that are experiencing homelessness, communities that are impacted by HIV and Trans women and Gender expansive communities. Chicago House Chief Financial Officer Andrea Peoples was arrested on January 6, 2020 by Chicago Police Department and Cook County State’s Attorney office charged her with felony theft. Andrea Peoples and two other “high level” employees defrauded Chicago House and Social Service Agency out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. This crime has put the clients, employees and community members at risk for losing access to housing, medical care, HIV prevention, legal, and case management. We can no longer put fiduciary trust in a group of people who did not sound the alarm as this robbery to our communities took place. We need new leadership that can be accountable and transparent to the communities it serves. This change is important because there are going to be a lot more victims of domestic abuse because the perpetrators would now get away with abusing their partners without repercussions. Trump, and any future president, shall be held accountable for breaking the law, be it federal, constitutional or public laws. WE THE PEOPLE, that pay your exorbitant salaries, declare that you have failed in your duty. Your duty to represent us and uphold the constitution. You also have broken the law of our land by not holding a fair trial and subverting your oath to be fair and impartial. Retribution to the GOP will be swift and long lasting. Taxpayer money is being wasted. The homeless black and white man are forgotten, forced into deplorable situations, and told by the shelter board we are screwed and not a priority. The taxpayer is paying for a system that can change and we can be in jobs, out of the shelter system faster, and not even in subsidized housing, not in section 8, not in assisted living, but in our own homes. We do not have to stand by, wasting hard earned taxpayer dollars, and just accept the norm and say things cant change, we are screwed. Things can change. President Trump is proposing changes to disability insurance (SSDI and SSI) that would impact an estimated 2.6 million people with disabilities, many of whom are families with children. Families like Kara’s in North Carolina: “My son is on the autism spectrum, he has other health issues that limit what he is able to eat, and he has horrible anxiety. He’s never been able to attend a regular school—we had to pull him out at the age of 7 because he would get so anxious and have hallucinations. On top of that, I have serious health issues. I have had 7 back surgeries and I’m on 19 different prescriptions. I’m a fall risk. I’m in bed a lot. I have blurry vision, narcolepsy and Behcet’s Disease (an autoimmune disease). I worked as a therapist but eventually had to close my practice. My husband works from home so he can take care of us but because of that he can’t advance in his career. I started applying for disability and was denied twice. Then I got a lawyer and it took forever for me to get a hearing and eventually get approved for disability insurance. SSDI got us to the point that we weren’t terrified all the time. We can breathe. If we lose it I don’t know what we will do. Failure to enforce this law is seen as encouraging the breaking of the law, empowering those who wish to silence protest, thus making the city and police department culpable in the event of injury or death resulting from aggressive action against those who peacefully assemble. Tell our city officials to enforce the law. Demand they make our gatherings safe for all citizens to attend. A city where parents can safely bring their children to rallies to witness the exercising of their First Amendment Rights, without fear of exposing them to violence or foul language .

The CDC reported in 2014 that people of color are more likely than whites to accidentally drown. In fact African Americans are likely to drown at a rate of 10X more frequently than whites. This is a shocking statistic and the reason for this I believe is lack of access to municipal pools. The 911 students at Encina are 81% minority and 93% are economically disadvantaged. They must endure the hot summers of Sacramento and there are few public pools in the vicinity. I presented this information to the Encina School Site Council in November, 2016. I thought that they would see how important a school site pool would be. I was so happy when Measure P passed. I assumed the district would provide a necessary provision. Then I saw that a track and field turf with stadium bleachers had been prioritized and was surprised that this superseded the need for a pool. The average temperature in Sacramento in July is 94 degrees and the nearby rivers are enticing. The American and Sacramento Rivers are dangerous, but attractive to swim in on hot days. On June 24 2018, an Encina Student, Mohammed Mounir Kamal, aged 17, accidentally drowned in the Sacramento River when he was on a picnic with his family. This sad tragedy should be our wake up call. Studies have shown the risk of drowning can be ameliorated by providing safe swimming sites, according to the author of “Contested Waters-A Social History of Swimming Pools in America” Prof. Jeff Wiltse, 2007. Moreover, swimming is a California State Teaching Standard. Having a pool on a school site underscores the importance of knowing this skill. A pool on campus supports four sports; Competitive Swimming, Diving, Synchronized Swimming and Water Polo. The Mission Oaks Park and Recreation District which serves the area has no pool either. Dan Barton, the Director has said he is open to operating the Encina pool over the summer. There are many models for this. For example in West Sacramento, The Parks and Recreation District has a contract with the Washington Unified School District to operate the pool during summertime at River City High School. It is called a Mixed Use pool. The approximate cost for a pool is $7 million. Encina had a winning swim team in 1991 and the SJUSD filled in the pool with dirt and asked the students to practice at Sac State. This proved to be too much of an inconvenience and the team disbanded soon after. Seven other SJUSD high school sites have pools so please consider giving these needy students a pool. A pool on campus supports four sports: Competitive Swimming, Synchronized Swimming, Water Polo and Diving. Swimming is unlike any other sport; it is a life saving skill.

The very integrity of the United States and the Presidency are at stake. Our core values are being challenged and wrong is wrong. Period.

The importance of a child's success is from their conduct and grades. Even if a child is struggling academically, the right to possess a natural part of their being should not be denied politically. The hatred and conformity of not just a school district, but insincere outlooks from employers and public offices should not prevent the acceptance of what should be an overall standard. Time and time again, the African American community has to change their cultural character just to be allowed dire resources. I want to speak not just for the African American community, but to every one as a whole. With the Islamic populace with their hijab, with caucasians with their long hair or mohawks, and etc., this should not be a problem or a distraction because of how we keep our cultural grounds. If their are beads or metal clips, and etc. that should be banned as a dress code violation, then I can understand that part of unacceptance. Things can be used for weapons, hazards to others and themselves for accident or purposeful negligence, then it shouldn't be allowed. But to condemn a student because of a natural expression is hurtful, irresponsible, judgmental, and inconsiderate for what kind of person you are putting under the scope. The policy should change because it would bring us closer together as different cultures being together under one roof. I will not stand for the outright disrespect. I will not stand for the undermining and non-consideration of others rightful possession. Change this policy or this will come to a bigger gap within our great American civility.
