  • Universal Early Childhood Education
The United States need a public early education system (infant to pre-K) because many of our parents work and they need not only an affordable daycare, but a high quality early childhood education. According to the American Federation of Teachers, the positive impact of high-quality early childhood programs on children’s success in school and their future has been well documented. Many studies have demonstrated the importance of the early years for the developing brain. And over the past four decades, numerous studies such as the Perry Preschool Study; the Abecedarian Project; the Chicago Longitudinal Study; and the Cost, Quality, and Child Outcomes Study have indicated that high-quality early childhood education increases the likelihood that children—particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds—will become successful students and citizens. Providing a public early childhood education to our families is not just good for the families, but is also good for the community and the country, Even though providing a universal early childhood education is expensive, "studies consistently show a savings of $7 for every dollar spent on such programs" for middle income families and up to $27 for every dollar spent on low income children. AFT claims that "these savings come as a result of lower costs for remedial and special education, fewer school dropouts, and less delinquency and subsequent unemployment.or criminal activity" (AFT Educational Issues Policy Brief-Number 15 July 2002). Our society needs to recognize that early childhood education should be viewed as an important part of the education continuum. Legislators need to understand that providing a high quality early childhood experiences to all our children will ensure their success at school and in life. Parents with young children across the country must join together and convince our political leaders that the time is now for the country to provide high quality early childhood education for all.

  • Respect Our Teachers & Support Public Education
This petition opposes Gov. Jindal's unprecedented assault on public education and teachers. His proposed 'reforms' rapidly expand an already failing charter system: 80% of charters in New Orleans have received Ds and Fs. He is proposing vouchers, which places even more public dollars in unaccountable private hands. His assault on the teaching profession flies in the face of everything we've learned from the world's top performing educators, including those from Finland. We call on Gov. Jindal to end his cynical, misguided attacks on public schools and on our teachers.

What measures are being taken by the School Superintendent to keep "Pink Slime" out of our student/staff hamburger and Mexican meals that are served weekly in our schools' lunch meals? DO NOT serve any ground beef until parents are informed and provided documents that reveal the source of the meat. Nutbutter and jelly sandwiches should be served until such time.

  • Stop the Dismantling of Public Education! Keep LAUSD School Staffs From Being Given Pink Slips!
Although my experience is with the Los Angeles Unified School District, districts all over the country are laying off teachers, nurses, and other school site staff not because there are real budget cuts but because superintendents play footsie with for-profit schools in order to make money off of public education for themselves, which violates the very idea of public education. For-profit schools don't abide by the collective bargaining contracts that public school teachers and other school site staff enjoy, including medical benefits. Teachers, nurses, janitors provide the environment that educate American youth. No of us living would be able to live life without the education provided by teachers and the environments maintained by other school site staff. In California, AB 114 was passed to provide additional funding for all California public schools at the 2009-2010 Schoo Year levels, bringing additional funds to reinstate all staff that had been laid off last year but many districts, especially LAUSD, are withholding that money for rehiring laid off staff. This is unconscionable while many new for-profit charter schools are being created by public school districts paying teachers and other staff the minimum salaries possible.

  • Give Our Kids the Arts AfterSchool they Deserve
Englewood Public School District's Children are not being given the best after-school care. Instead of parents having their children in an Arts Enrichment Program to increase their appreciation, knowledge, culture and learning capacity. Parents are forced to accept a program that simply baby sits kids until they are picked up instead of teaching them music, dance and other artistic mediums to enhance both the left and right sides of the brain which increases their ability to learn.

  • Saving Public Education in NH. Defeat HB1607
Using public funds to incentivize parents to withdraw their children from public schools and place them in private, religious and home schools is not only unconstitutional but would reduce the much needed funding already lacking in our current system.
