• Wildlife and Habitat Restoration in our National Forests and Public Lands
The "multiple use" concept in our National Forests and other public lands has left our natural wildlife and habitats behind again. Too much motorized access for timber, mining, recreation and unrestricted hunting and trapping have kept habitat, especially wetland habitat, from adequate protection and recovery. In particular, active beaver-managed wetlands are known to provide multiple benefits for all species including threatened and endangered species of both plants and animals. The cyclic nature of undisturbed beaver-created openings in the forest are far more productive and effective than "micro-managed" attempts to create habitat artifically with "wildlife openings" that are regularly mowed or burned, "beneficial" forest clear-cuts or artificial dams that are expensive and require maintenance. These natural wetlands also improve all aspects of our regions' hydrology including flood mitigation, drought relief, pollution and sediment reduction and forest fire suppression and yet have far too little protection in our ever-expanding world of roads, trails and other development. Goal: up to at least 10% of our publicly owned natural (relatively un-altered/undeveloped) landscapes which would also increase habitat and ecosystem continuity. This would not mandate the elimination of trails or even roads or other access but would require the above protections to be 1st priority and uncompromised to the greatest (peer-reviewed) extent practicable.

  • Citizens Demand To Close Indian Point Nuclear Plant
Twenty million people live within fifty miles of Indian Point, and the risks are very real: 1. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) told Americans living 50 miles from Fukushima to evacuate, yet Indian Point has an inadequate evacuation plan of only 10 miles. 2. Indian Point is located near a fault line. In the event of an earthquake of a possible magnitude of 7, Indian Point is totally vulnerable. 3. Indian Point operates without an approved fire prevention plan and has been exempted from countless safety rules. 4. Indian Point lacks an adequate protection plan in a world of real terrorist threats. 5. Indian Point does not have a plan to repay the potential loss of lives, homes, livelihood, and irreparable damage to drinking water and the environment for the residents of the historic Hudson Valley. Replaceable energy is not worth the enormous safety risk that Indian Point poses. Please, sign the petition to close Indian Point today!

  • Keep Fracking Out of Our Forests and Parks
Right now, the Obama administration is deciding on rules that will determine whether fracking is allowed in many of our national forests or near our national parks. The frack-fueled oil and gas rush has marred countless landscapes across the nation. It has also contaminated drinking water and made people sick. Let’s tell President Obama to keep our forests and parks frack-free.

  • US Dairy wants FDA rule allowing unlabeled, artificially sweetened milk
The US Dairy industry wants the FDA to pass a rule to allow adding artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame and Sucralose to milk and 17 other dairy products, UNLABELED. Their claim is to make dairy products taste better for obese children/people and dairy products are a good part of a healthy diet. The Dairy industry also wants to be allowed to add these chemicals secretly, without any package labeling, claiming that adding diet connotations make things less appealing for young people. This is a travesty on so many levels. Adding chemicals that some people deliberately choose to avoid to target food groups in order to make them more palatable unknowingly, hiding the additive by avoiding proper labeling, the chemicals themselves have been shown to be worth avoiding in studies. Food labeling should be transparent, and whole foods should be encouraged and not shaded with phony sweetness.

  • Save our Bees and our Food!
Bees polinate 70% of our food source and Bee populations are in a critical state right now. The EPA has recently APPROVED use of a pesticide called Sulfoxaflor; "The agency finds this decision to be in the public interest because...this pesticide ...kill[s] a broad spectrum of piercing/sucking insects, including species that are difficult to control...[and have] developed resistance to alternative registered pesticide." Including Bees. Update: What are your food options if there are no Bees? http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/this-is-what-your-grocery-store-looks-like-without-bees-211164141.html

  • Secretary Kerry: Go See What A Tar Sands Spill Really Looks Like
Ever since an Exxon pipeline spilled more than 200,000 gallons of tar sands oil in their community in March, the families of Mayflower, Arkansas have been living in a public health nightmare – not knowing if their air and water could be poisoning their children, but having nowhere else to go. Now they have made one simple request of Secretary of State John Kerry: come visit the site of the tar sands spill in Arkansas and see why you must reject the risky Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. These families don’t want their tragedy repeated in towns across America, so they are calling on Secretary Kerry to come see with his own eyes what we’d be risking if we allow the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline to run straight through our heartland. Please stand with the families of Mayflower and join the movement to stop the risky Keystone XL tar sands pipeline by signing this petition today.

  • Take Round Up Off the DInner Table
We have what is called RR1 corn and soy being planted in our fields. For those of you who don't know about these Monsanto patented seeds, they contain the same substance that you see in TV ads with the home owner holding a container of Round Up and "killing" weeds for up to three months. That same substance is in every seed that is purchased from Monsanto by our farmers. I do not want to be ingesting Round Up soy or corn and avoid any product that contains soy or corn on the label . There is RR1 soy in Similac, a baby formula. Do you really want your children, your grandchildren having this poison put in their food. The FDA has no idea what long term lasting health issues may arise from ingesting these foods stuffs day after day, year after year. Congress and the White House for once has got to put the American People above the Monsanto Corporation and Stop the planting of these insidious seeds.

  • SUPPORT EAST BAY HILLS EIS TO PROMOTE FIRE SAFETY AND SCIENCE-BASED CONSERVATION
This petition is sponsored by the Claremont Canyon Conservancy. The Conservancy is devoted to the cause of conservation as well as science-based prevention of the wildfires that have recurred in and around the canyon for the last hundred years. The Conservancy invites anyone who wishes to see how fire prevention and management through removal of stands of eucalyptus is consistent with conservation, reduction of greenhouse gases, and restoration of beautiful wildlands to walk the trails built by the Conservancy and UC on the south side of Claremont Canyon (signpost 29), where bay laurel, redwood, the rare western leatherwood, coastal live oak, and other species coexist, many springing up spontaneously after eucalyptus were removed over the past decade. The Conservancy believes that active involvement in the wild lands around which we live enriches all of us and the communities in which we live.

  • FEMA: Stop the destruction of Berkeley's Historical Strawberry and Claremont Canyons!
FEMA plans clear-cutting 85,000 Berkeley and Oakland trees with no plan to replant. They intend to pour hundreds of gallons of toxic herbicides such as "Round-Up" to prevent re-sprouting and recover a portion with several feet of wood chips.

Have you looked up at the sky lately? "Everyone has seen crisscrossing streaks of white clouds trailing behind jet aircraft, stretching from horizon to horizon, eventually turning the sky into a murky haze". These planes are spraying and filling our air, water and soil with aluminum, barium and strontium. This is causing our global climate to change, farmers crops to die, reduced sun exposure and illness. This must be stopped!

  • Keep our water clean! Ban fracking now!
My name is Siena and I am nine years old. My mom and I eat vegetables, and my mom says that eating them is good for us. It won't be if the ground they grow in or the water that helps them grow is poisoned by fracking. When people frack, they inject water, sand, and toxic chemicals into the ground. These chemicals can poison our water and our food. Fracking can give my friends, my family, and other people that I don't even know cancer. I don't want to get cancer. Do you want to get cancer? I don't want to drink fracking water. I don't want to eat fracking food. Fracking can cause big earthquakes. These earthquakes can be deadly. Right now, the people of California--and that includes you and me--don't know where or when the drillers are fracking, what chemicals they are using, and what pollutants they are releasing into the water and air that we drink and breathe. A lot of big oil and gas companies don't care about that. They just care about making money. They want our governor to let them poison us and maybe cause earthquakes. Maybe they are so old that they don't care if they get sick or ruin the planet. But I do. I want to stay healthy and keep the earth healthy too. I'm only 9 years old.

  • FEMA: Do Not Fund Clear Cutting Trees & Roundup
Berkeley and Oakland California were blessed with the leadership of John Muir. We have a wonderful park system in the East Bay Hills. Now FEMA, under the guise of fire prevention, is considering funding clear cutting our beloved forests - eliminating 60,000 trees - and then spraying 30,000 gallons of Monsanto Round-up twice a year for 10 years. This is "eco-cide" - genocide of our ecology, and has to stop.
