Flame Retardants are toxic industrial products used in furniture, mattress, toys, electronics and clothes. These products are toxic and carcinogenic. Kids are especially vulnerable to the toxic effects of these industrial chemicals.

I know that hydraulic fracturing in California has been ongoing for well over thirty years (30). The damage that this kind of method poses to the environment is clear. The process requires 65,000 and 600,000 gallons of water and about 750 toxic chemical compounds as additives. This process is highly toxic to the water table, which is generally at 1000 feet while the shale deposits are generally at 8,000 feet. You do the math. The result of this kind process to our environment and water is irreversible. This kind of process must be stopped and not regulated. You cannot regulate this process its far too dangerous to trust the oil and gas companies to not contaminate the water and environment irretrievably. Please say NO to any hydraulic fracturing in California..

Montgomery County Public Schools (MD) use disposable styrofoam lunch trays. The Young Activist Club has researched and identified problems with styrofoam (resin #6, polystyrene), including that it is made from styrene, a carcinogen that can leach into food. The Club has raised more than $10,000 to pilot a tray washing project in one local county school, Piney Branch Elementary School. The pilot will assess whether the extra labor and water costs of washing trays can be offset by the costs of perpetually buying single-use disposable trays. But the local School Board and Superintendent have rejected the students' idea. Please help us convince the Superintendent to support this student-led initiative, which has the potential to save the public school district money at a time when it most needs it.

To keep costs down Dispensaries often use agricultural pesticides and other non food grade substances. CTS Corp left a TCE (trichloroethylene) leaking mess in the Mills Gap community of South Asheville. The plant closed in 1987 initial investigation began in 1991. Since that time, TCE and other carcinogens have been found in the communities' well water. We have heard that the agency that is charged with protecting the Delaware River (the Delaware River Basin Commission, or “DRBC”) will meet again soon to consider allowing harmful gas drilling near the river—drilling that has left a trail of air and water pollution, toxic waste and a legacy of environmental destruction in its wake all across nearby Pennsylvania. We can’t allow this track record of pollution anywhere near our great Delaware River. We need to make sure that the DRBC hasn’t forgotten about the overwhelming opposition to such a risky and shortsighted proposal—and that they must protect the Delaware River.
