• Global Warming Mitigation and Recovery Act of 2013
$1.2 trillion was wiped out from the global economy this year as a result of a warming planet, which is 1.6% of the world economy, according to the Dara Group's report, Climate Vulnerability Monitor. The study also estimates costs associated with warming to increase to 3.2% of the world economy by 2030, leaving world GDP nearly stagnant, and falling. It is way past due that the US Government wake up to the sobering fact that climate change and economic decline must be fought with trillions of dollars in large infrastructure projects to renew our energy, transportation, and communication grids, as well as reshape urban planning in order to create a more balanced relationship between humans, resources, and nature.

  • Stop fossil fuel advertising on TV
Fossil fuel companies give advertising dollars to Television networks to advance clean coal, clean natural gas, cleaned up oil and chemicals in the Gulf of Mexico; after the worst oil spill in the history of the world. It is offensive to view fossil fuel spokespersons describe mountaintop removal, Fracking, oil clean-ups, pipelines and other fossil fuel endeavors that are destroying the planet as clean and good for us.

  • Colorado State Legislature: Establish a Deposit-Refund System for Beverage Containers
There is currently a lack of economic incentive for individuals and small business owners to recycle in Colorado. As a result, many recyclables get sent to local landfills, our landfills fill up faster, and we take up more land--a limited resource--to deposit our waste. Also, the process of creating new containers requires more raw resources and energy than recycling old ones. Many states have successfully and effectively implemented container-deposit legislation and it is time that Colorado follows this precedent.

As a member of my local land trust, I have seen properties of significant conservation values turn into huge housing developments for lack of funds to preserve them.

  • Have a National Deposit on Bottles & Cans
The US uses 25% of the world's natural resources but our recycling rate nationally is deplorable. We can do better and be the example fr our children and the rest of the world. By having a deposit in and and bottles, people will be encouraged to recycle and our public places will be free of this sort of debris, as there will be a financial incentive for people to pick up this 'trash.'

  • Make climate change a priority
The time to act on climate change is now. We need leadership from Congress and the President to put a price on carbon and enact other measures to dramatically reduce our carbon output.
