Our country is facing a grave risk from the opioid crisis. The Drug Czar cannot be another political crony or a payback for a favor. The job demands a person of intelligence, a well-informed person whose only agenda is to rid our country of this scourge.

Voting is the most fundamentally significant right under our Constitution because the right to vote in a free and unimpaired manner is the preservative of other basic civil and political rights. Offering no-excuse absentee voting will expand access to the ballot box for all Pennsylvanians and make it easier for Pennsylvanians to participate in our democracy. “[T]he right to vote is too precious, too fundamental to be burdened or conditioned.” Harper v. Virginia State Bd. of Elections, 383 U.S. 663, 670 (1966).

Our democracy relies on a free, fair, and adversarial press to hold power accountable. It’s one of the reasons we have a First Amendment. But President Trump continues to escalate his attacks on journalists -- recently threatening to take away NBC’s broadcast license for reporting what he claims is “Fake News.” To be perfectly clear, Trump has absolutely no right or ability to make good on this threat. The law doesn’t let the President revoke broadcast licenses.. If Trump tried to, it would be blatant and unacceptable intervention in the decisions of the Federal Communications Commission, an independent agency. But we can’t allow this President to continue to bully and attack journalists for doing their jobs -- just because they’re reporting news he doesn’t like. It’s not just NBC stations that will find this threat chilling, but also smaller independent stations around the country who might lack the resources to fight back. This isn’t the first time President Trump has attacked journalists he believed were treating him unfairly. During the campaign, Trump pledged to “open up” libel laws to make it easier to sue news organizations -- and earlier this year he branded them an “enemy of the American People.” This sort of attack on the free press undermines our democracy. We are not an authoritarian state -- Americans expect the media to hold Donald Trump and anyone else with political power accountable. I believe that medical marijuana should be accessible to people suffering with illness and disease, and it's evident to see that in states that medical marijuana is legal, there are only positive effects that have come to the surface. Less people will be struggling and everyone deserves the treatment of medical marijuana if it benefits their conditions. There is sufficient indication from President Trump’s actions and speech that he no longer has the mental ability to Perform his Constitutional Duties. The President appears unable to maintain attention to the subject of which he is speaking when not reading a prepared statement. He seems to not remember the details of conversations just a few hours later, and his recollection of those conversations seem to be totally incongruent with others who were a part of those same conversations. Literally thousands of Mental Health Professionals have stated publicly that our President seems to be exhibiting sign of either mental illness or dementia. Additionally, the Political Positions the President is taking now are so opposite to his previously stated positions as to indicate he is no longer able to think logically.

Ranked choice voting (RCV) allows voters to rank candidates on the ballot, not just pick one -- making their voices truly heard. RCV discourages attack ads, eliminates the "spoiler effect," and ensures that election winners have the support of a majority of voters. RCV allows us to vote our hopes, not our fears. In 2016, Maine voters decisively passed the Maine Ranked Choice Voting Initiative (Question 5). Since then, the Legislature has been debating whether they want to respect the will of the voters, and even considered repealing RCV. Now, they're debating it again. Democracy is built on the simple idea that elections should reflect the will of the people. Now, some officials seem to think that voters can’t be trusted. President Donald Trump has refused to release his tax returns ever since he entered the presidential race, breaking with decades of bipartisan precedent. And there are already plenty examples of him and his family personally profiting from the presidency. That lack of basic transparency took on new meaning when Trump proposed a massive tax cut for the wealthy and corporate interests. Now, we have to judge the President’s tax plan without any idea how much it would benefit Trump himself. This is exactly why elected officials are expected to share their tax returns with the public -- so that voters can hold them accountable and evaluate conflicts of interest. But instead, Trump wants to rewrite our nation’s tax laws while keeping his own business dealings secret. Just one example -- Trump’s proposal to end the estate tax would likely save his children millions of dollars. There are countless opportunities like this in the tax code for Trump to enrich his personal wealth -- and we can’t know what they are without seeing his tax returns. Everyone has a right to know, and the right to basic transparency from the President of the United States. So before Trump moves his tax plan forward, he ought to give the public a clear picture of his background, experience, and business interests.
