My father taught me fairness, justice and opportunity is the bedrock or our society. He said we are our brothers keeper. But our Republican Governor does not subscribe to these ideals. His decision to stop Public to Assistance to single unemployed people , his reduction to educational funding of public schools, his refusal to extend MA to to the working poor, his push to restrict a citizens right to vote and his lack of protecting our environment has caused pain and suffering to millions of our citizens. Countless times in our nation's history, we've seen the amazing power of democracy - how ordinary people, often without much money, joined together to bring about lasting change. In Citizens United, the Supreme Court opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate money in elections by declaring that corporations are people and money is speech. Now, our democracy is at grave risk of becoming nothing more than an auction-one in which the We the People will always be outbid. Corporations are not people. They do not breathe or eat or sleep. They do not dance or fall in love or raise children. They do not go bowling or fight in wars or get cancer. They do not vote. Yet now they threaten to trample democracy by claiming constitutional protections that were intended only for actual people. The ruling must be overturned, and a constitutional amendment is the best way to do that. Millions of voters across the country have expressed their outrage at the Citizens United decision by voting on ballot questions and it's time for Philadelphians to get the chance to express our outrage too. If chained CPI had been instituted in 2002, today the average SS recipient would be receiving $869 less than they are currently receiving using the current method of calculating cost of living increases. On October 31, Senate Republicans outrageously continued their unprecedented obstruction of President Obama's judicial nominees by filibustering Pattie Millett, the first of three pending nominees to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to be brought up for a vote. With the exception of only two GOP senators -- Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska -- Republicans signaled with this vote that they would use partisan obstruction tactics to keep the incredibly important D.C. Circuit stacked disproportionately with ideological right-wing judges. This is an abdication of senators' constitutional duties fueled by nothing but politics, and it must stop.

The Leahy-Sensenbrenner NSA reform bill has been endorsed by the ACLU. 2013 may already be the year in which the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, but Massachusetts should take a stand and also make it the year in which our Commonwealth stood up for voters by passing truly comprehensive election modernizations.

This action reflects the dissatisfaction of many residents in Florida's 2nd congressional district because of the poor leadership shown by their U.S. Representative, Steve Southerland and his negative disposition towards Congress passing a comprehensive immigration reform bill; supporting the Affordable Care Act; and negotiations that recently led to the Federal Government reopening after it was shut down and America's national debt ceiling being raised.

Our basic right to vote is under assault. The right to vote is the political tool that belongs solely to We the People. Restricting or curtailing that right must never be allowed if we are to keep our Democracy viable. Immediately on the heels of our national "Supreme" Court's recent decision to gut our Voting Rights Act by disqualifying Section 4 (which required only certain states to obtain DOJ evaluation and approval that their proposed state laws would not discriminate against voting groups), at least two states, Texas and North Carolina, have now quickly enacted restrictive voter ID laws, the very laws that were, in fact, previously judged to be discriminatory, preventing their enactment prior to this Supreme Court decision. Our Supreme Court’s action has thrust this issue back into the legislative branch of our government, and we must apply heavy pressure upon the House of Representatives and the Senate to restore the full integrity of our critical Voting Rights Act. My petition demands that our Voting Rights Act Section 4 be restored and that it apply to every state in the nation with no ability to “opt out.”
