• Rep. Rodney Davis: End the Shutdown!
    On Tuesday, October 15 at noon, constituents are going to visit Representative Rodney Davis at his district offices in Illinois' 13th Congressional District. We're going to call on him to support and vote for clean bills to end the government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling to avoid default on the nation's debts, without tying these to efforts to defund the Affordable Care Act or demands to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits. We'll call on Rep. Davis to sign the discharge petition to force a clean bill to reopen the government to the House floor for a vote. Illinois' 13th Congressional district stretches from Champaign in the east to Madison County in the west. Davis' district offices are in Champaign, Normal, Decatur, and Taylorville.

    WE THE PEOPLE are being held hostage against our will by members of Congress by the means of this Government Shutdown. Those responsible need to be brought to trial in front of the Supreme Court to face charges of Negligence, Fraud, Corruption, taking the government hostage, Treason, and a host of other charges. It is the National Guards' duty to protect the people from threats such as this.

    The extreme right wing of the Republican Party engineered the shutdown — and is further maneuvering to ransom the full faith and credit of the United States government — in a desperate ploy to force their radical, regressive policies on the Democrats, the American people, and the global economy. Now, Republican leaders like Paul Ryan are proposing “reforms” of Medicare and Social Security if only President Obama would deign to “negotiate” with them. If I steal your bicycle, and then tell you that I’ll only give it back if you let me keep the wheels and the handlebars, would it be reasonable for me to accuse you of refusing to “negotiate” because you want your bike back completely intact? This is not negotiation. It is not democracy. It’s kindergarten. And the radical right still doesn’t play will with others. Make no mistake, the Medicare and Social Security “reforms” that Paul Ryan and other Republican leaders have in mind include raising eligibility ages, cutting benefits, limiting participation or even excluding some seniors altogether, and, ultimately, privatizing both of these essential programs right out of existence. We simply must not allow this.

    US Code 2384 addresses acts which are against the law, specifically "or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States," The refusal by Congress to support, and vote on the funding of the Government and specifically the refusal to raise the debt limit fits into this category. As citizens we ask the Attorney General to address why this aspect of the code is not being applied to the parties who are committing this act.

    Several of my friends are seeing entire communities effected by this, the second major fiscal failure of this Congress. For too long we have all stood by shaking our head in frustration feeling powerless in the face of the chaos of our alledged leaders. This great nation is quaking as our leaders permit scandel after scandel, then highjack our fiscal security. Nothing is going to change unless we speak out and insist on accountability and consequences.

    The entire nation is pretty sickened by members of the House of Representatives, who, represent Grover Norquist's interests, rather than the country's. Since when do those who swear to represent us, make blatant deals with outside interests, and shut our government down?   • "Pay Cuts for Congress."
    Mississippi has a number of federally funded facilities. There are 1000's of Mississippi Families feeling the hard economic challenges brought on by a Federal Government shut down. I think that it is the least Congress can do is to feel the same economic strains at home just as we do.
