• Take CORPORATE money out of elections.
This is an important policy that the majority of Americans see as needing cleaned up and should become a litmus test for the next set of elections. I think this is an important issue that needs worked on and not forgotten or pushed aside by the many issues that will come between now and the next set of local and national elections. Please add your 2 cents and take your own actions to make a difference in how our leaders are elected. Thanks.

  • Eliminate ALL political parties in the U.S.
We do not need power plays simply to raise money. They were meant for a "horse & buggy" time and not for the 21st century and beyond.

  • CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM - OR GO HOME!
WE ARE LOSING OUR DEMOCRACY IN THE UNITED STATES because of the influence of big money on our government officials. Our country needs campaign finance reform NOW. Each citizen should have an equal voice in our government dealings. Because of how the current system is set up, legislators are forced to seek funds to run for office and then owe favors to the contributors. Corporations and the wealthy "hedge their bets" by contributing to ALL legislators of both primary parties. Fundraising also takes legislators' time and energy from doing what they need to be focusing on - representing the American people. WE DEMAND EQUAL REPRESENTATION. CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM - OR GO HOME!

  • Mayor Emanuel and Chicago Aldermen: Prevent Another Parking Meters Fiasco
We deserve to know who controls our city services. We don’t want to make the same mistakes as we did when we gave up control of our parking meters. Now parking meter rates have skyrocketed and taxpayers have no say in our own parking policies for 75 years. And despite this experience, the city continues to contract out services – from clinics to call centers. The PTAO will make sure the parking meter disaster and other reckless outsourcing don’t happen again. The PTAO will give decision makers and the public all the information they need before a service is outsourced and ensure that the city of Chicago and Chicago residents benefit with better services and a more accountable government.

  • Pass the Drone Strike Transparency Bill
The Senate Intelligence Committee has taken an important step by passing an intelligence authorization which would, for the first time, require the Administration to publicly report on civilian casualties from U.S. drone strikes. The Administration should support this provision, and Congress should pass this drone strike transparency provision into law. Sarah Knuckey, Director of the Project on Extrajudicial Executions at New York University School of Law and a Special Advisor to the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial executions, calls this provision "an important step toward improving transparency," and notes that "Various U.N. officials, foreign governments, a broad range of civil society, and many others, including former U.S. Department of State Legal Advisor Harold Koh ... have called for the publication of such basic information." This provision could be offered as an amendment in the Senate to the National Defense Authorization Act. It could be offered in the House as an amendment on the intelligence authorization, or as a freestanding bill. Help us move Congress and the President to support this provision by signing our petition. [Text of the provision can be found here: http://www.justforeignpolicy.org/node/1470.]

  • STRENGTHENING SOCIAL SECURITY ACT OF 2013
The Social Security Administration, having an independent funding source via payroll deductions, has no impact on our National Deficit or National Debt. However, in past debates over the budget, President Obama has proposed adjustments to Social Security Benefits, such as changing CPI to “chained-CPI” calculations. This would reduce Social Security Benefits for retired citizens, disabled individuals and veterans and deceased workers' survivors. Budget discussions must not include changes to Social Security benefits. A Public Policy Poll (PPP) in August indicated that significantly more that 50% of Americans are opposed to using the “Chained-CPI” method to calculate inflation adjustments. The Strengthen Social Security Act of 2013 addresses this issue and others to sustain Social Security and improve the economic and retirement security of millions of Americans (36% of Soc. Sec. recipients receive 90% of their income from Social Security benefits). The Strengthen Social Security Act of 2013 would: Strengthen Benefits by Reforming the Social Security Benefit Formula: The Act would change the method by which the Social Security Administration (SSA) calculates Social Security benefits. This change will boost benefits for all Social Security beneficiaries by approximately $70 per month, but is targeted to help those in the low and middle of the income distribution, for whom Social Security has become an ever greater share of their retirement income. Ensure that Cost of Living Adjustments Adequately Reflect the Living Expenses of Retirees: The Act changes the way the Social Security Administration calculated the Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA). To ensure that benefits better reflect cost increases facing seniors, future COLAs will be based on the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E). Making this change to Social Security is expected to result in higher COLAs, insuring that seniors are able to better keep up with the rising costs of essential items, like health care and prescription drugs. Improve the Long Term Financial Condition of the Trust Fund: Social Security is not in crisis, but does face a long term deficit. According to the most recent Social Security Trustees' report, the Trust Fund will be able to pay full benefits through 2033 (after which, benefits would only be reduced). To help extend the life of the trust fund, and decrease the 75 year actuarial deficit, the legislation would phase out the current taxable cap of $113,700 and instead ask the wealthiest Americans to contribute to the program the same share of their income as the middle class. A comprehensive graphic analysis of these issues was produced by Democracy for America, Social Security Works, MoveOn.org and GHERGICH & Co. Please view it at this link: http://act.democracyforamerica.com/sign/social_security_infographic/?akid=4145.922777.Fz4UDL&rd=1&source=em.socsecinfo.20131108&t=1 (copy & paste) Americans cannot afford to have their Social Security benefits cut. The Strengthen Social Security Act of 2013 needs to be enacted to protect our retired, disabled and surviving citizens. Please sign this petition to influence our senators to stand up for the strengthening of Social Security.
