• Republican Inaction On Immigration Is Hurting My Family!
I know our country's immigration laws are broken. My son-in-law, who has been in this country since he was a teenager, was racially profiled, stopped, and arrested in the small town of Fincastle, VA. In just a matter of weeks, he was dropped in a Mexican border town without ever having appeared in front of a judge and without signing a voluntary removal document. These types of deportations are happening at a rate of 1,100 per day and must be stopped! Over 200 days ago, the Democratic-led Senate passed an immigration bill that would update our broken immigration laws. Yet, Speaker John Boehner and key Republicans in the House -- including my member of Congress, Rep. Bob Goodlatte -- are refusing to allow a vote on it. As the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Goodlatte has the power to move legislation, like the Senate's immigration bill, that could directly help my family and millions of families like mine. Still, Rep. Goodlatte has refused to meet with me (and even my pastor) to talk about it. I need your help getting through to Rep. Goodlatte. Since he's a key Republican working on immigration reform, his decisions will impact all of us!

  • Treat all immigrants like Justin Bieber!
Justin Bieber, Canadian teen pop music and heart-throb, has gotten himself out of some hot water in Florida. At approximately 4am this morning, Justin was pulled over by police in Miami after he was caught drag racing in his yellow Lamborghini. After failing a field sobriety test, he confessed to having been consuming alcohol, smoking marijuana, and had taken some prescription pills. Subsequently, he was additionally charged with driving without a valid drivers license and resisting arrest. After making a brief appearance before a judge, his bail was set to $2,500 and was released before a crowd of adoring fans who waited for him outside of the jail. The Bieber experience as an immigrant who made a string of mistakes starkly contrasts what many other immigrants with different statuses in this country experience, particularly undocumented Latinos. Every day, police departments all over the country work together with ICE to maintain 34,000 beds in different private detention centers filled to capacity every day and night. The vast majority of those who are incarcerated in these centers before being deported are Latino, and many of them are in these centers for far less severe infractions than what Mr. Bieber did. We at Presente.org are profoundly inspired by the Bieber experience, as it shows that the justice system may in fact have a soft spot for people who make mistakes. We are calling on the Department of Homeland Security and all police departments to adopt this trend of treating ALL other undocumented immigrants as if they were Justin Bieber.

  • Don't Deport Bieber!
Justin Bieber has been making headlines lately, but facing deportation shouldn't be one of them. His latest arrests should be dealt with like anyone else, with a day in court, not a threat of detention and deportation. We all deserve equality under the law. All of his fans and everyone else, let's get Bieb's back. Tell the Department of Homeland Security to stop these out-of-control deportations, beginning with Justin Bieber. #dontdeportbieber

  • Stop Siham Jihad's Deportation
Siham has deeply impacted the lives of everyone around her, especially that of her son, Naseem. If she is deported, her friends, community and son will all suffer an immense loss. Naseem will be most deeply affected, as he will be left alone, placed in state care and subjected to the uncertainties of life in foster care.

  • Ricardo shouldn't be torn apart from his family!
Michelle will be forced to spend her 12th birthday saying good-bye to her Dad, instead of spending it with him and the rest of her family like most kids her age. That's because immigration officials in the Obama Administration have decided to deport Michelle's dad, Ricardo Ramos. He has until Thursday to leave, the very same day as her birthday. Ricardo has called Ohio his home for nearly two decades and has three U.S. citizen children, yet ICE officials want to tear his family apart by deporting him. If ICE officials go through with Ricardo's deportation, Ricardo's family will be devastated. He's a loving dad and is the sole breadwinner in the family, recently taking on a second job in a restaurant in addition to the 16 years he's spent working in local nurseries. When police pulled Ricardo over for driving without a license, they sent him to ICE officials. Friends and supporters got Ricardo's initial January 1, 2014 deportation date postponed, but now ICE officials have set a new date to deport him just a few days away. We need your help returning him to his family! Ricardo would likely qualify for the path to citizenship in the Senate immigration bill and President Obama's Administration shouldn't be pushing hardworking, taxpaying Americans like Ricardo for Speaker John Boehner's inaction. In fact, because President Obama supports the Senate's bill, he shouldn't be deporting immigrants like Ricardo at all. Please help Ricardo by asking ICE officials to exercise "prosecutorial discretion" and let Ricardo return home to his family where he belongs. They need you to act right now! Michelle shouldn't spend her birthday being torn away from her dad. Help Ricardo stay where he belongs, at home!
