• Reopen the Swan River Public Access
UPDATE! The Lake County Commissioner's office has decided to allow the access to be open from Saturday mornings at 7am to around sunset on Sunday evenings. They see this as a temporary solution while they decide about the future of the site- whether that be permanent closure or expansion of the current location. They are also considering some other options, like an additional parking area near the current access. ___________________________________________________________ My husband and I float the Swan many times throughout the Spring and Summer- as many local residents do. We love being able to hook up the raft to go and float this beautiful river that is located so close to our home. We noticed recently that the access has been temporarily closed and are respectfully asking the county to reopen this area for public use. We have always used this area responsibly (parking in defined areas, packing out trash, etc.) and I have personally never seen any bad behavior from other users. Unfortunately, a few incidents have caused some of the private landowners to call for this closure. There are also some safety concerns with the overflow of parking. It is our understanding that the landowners were able to have Bill Barron close and lock the gate. After a call to the commissioner's office, we were told that it would remain closed for the summer until a solution could be found. Because of this closure and the limited areas available for public put in, I am afraid that we will no longer be able to enjoy this section of the river. We hope that a solution can be found- for all parties - but we are asking that they please not take it away indefinitely. For those of you who love the lower Swan as much as we do, and use it responsibly, please sign this petition and either CALL or EMAIL Bill Barron to let him know how you feel! • Trader Joe's: Stop Selling Meat Containing Antibiotics
Trader Joe’s has been responsive in the past to consumer concerns: they source their private label products with non-genetically modified ingredients, and have agreed not to sell genetically-engineered fish. And they already sell some antibiotic-free chicken and beef. As a champion for healthy eating, Trader Joe’s should refuse to sell meat containing antibiotics.

  • NAAB: Inclusion of Human Factors Criteria is Critical in 2014 Accreditation Conditions
Ensuring that current and future architects have the capability and expertise to design human-centered environments is critical for the future of the profession. The proposed changes are not adequate to protect the health, life, safety, and welfare of the public, nor are they consistent with the standards of engaged and responsible practice or global citizenship. It is essential that Accredited Architectural programs ensure students understand how to integrate research evidence into design decision-making, the critical relationships between humans and designed environments, the changing dynamics of people and environments, and are able to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.

  • Reparative Therapy for Texas Republicans
Texas conservatism must not be presented as an acceptable alternative lifestyle, in public policy, nor should family be redefined to include Republican politicians. We believe there should be no granting of special legal entitlements or creation of special status for conservative ideology, regardless of origin. We recognize the legitimacy and value of counseling which offers reparative therapy and treatment to patients who are seeking escape from the rightwing lifestyle. No laws or executive orders shall be imposed to limit or restrict access to this type of therapy. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/05/texas-gop-conversion-therapy_n_5454875.html author: facebook.com/deMARCracy twitter.com/MarcABelisle

  • Time for an Apology
I spent several weeks on the Leech Lake, Mille Lacs, and Red Lake Reservations in northern Minnesota. I saw firsthand both the problems still afflicting native peoples and the beautiful intricacies of native cultures that are still alive today. We have to stop cutting native people out of history and start including them in the present. Australia and Canada have apologized to their indigenous populations: it's time for the United States to join them. Check out my blog to learn more: http://haydnhornsteinplat.wix.com/bemidji2014#

  • Limit the influence of lobbyists in the Washington State Legislature
Washington State public officials are limited by law to accepting free meals on “infrequent occasions”. Despite revelations that some legislators have allowed lobbyists to pick up their tab several times in a single week, the Legislature refused to pass a bill requiring stronger disclosure laws. We need increased transparency regarding gifts that may influence our lawmakers in ways that benefit lobbyists over the average citizen. I have been working to raise awareness of hunger in our state and our nation. When I read that some of our lawmakers freely accept gifts of food while being less than generous in funding emergency feeding programs, it felt like a betrayal. Members of the legislature are paid a per diem to cover their expenses while in session. The Washington State Legislature Ethics Board is currently seeking public input regarding gifts of food and beverages. They need to hear people care about this issue. 4-15-14 Austin Jenkins – NW News Network (NPR) - Washington Ethics Board To Consider Crackdown On Lobbyist-Paid Meals http://nwnewsnetwork.org/post/washington-ethics-board-consider-crackdown-lobbyist-paid-meals 6/1/13 – Seattle Times: “Olympia lobbyists pampering lawmakers with free meals” http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2021104631_freemealsxml.html 7/30/13 - Seattle Times Editorial: “Legislative probe should spur more transparency”. http://seattletimes.com/html/editorials/2021497459_editethicsinvestigation29xml.html Comments need to be in by June 13th.

  • Pharmaceuticals and Mass Shootings
There is a common theme with mass shooters. Perpetrators are often taking psychoactive pharmaceuticals as prescribed by their mental heath care professional. We need a Congressional hearing on the subject! Pharmaceutical lobbyists would not like a public conversation about the connection between pharmaceuticals and violence, but there is a connection and we need to know to what extent. We cannot know unless there is an investigation. There is no shortage of coverage on where the guns and ammo are acquired, but what about the shooter's altered state of mind? For more info: http://www.psychintegrity.org/isepp_statement_on_the_connection_between_psychotropic_drugs_and_mass_murder.php Thank You!
