• Director Barber: Make Safety a Priority in Binghamton Girls' Softball
I'm a parent of a child playing Junior Softball with the City of Binghamton Parks & Recreation. Before her season started, the following notice was posted on the Binghamton East Side Youth Association Website indicating the potential for injury. Attention Parents: We need your help!!! The city of Binghamton has decided to add an inch of topsoil plus grass on the infield of the upper softball field at Fairview park. This has greatly effected the field making the field almost unplayable on. We have fought hard to get this softball field and is one of the few that remain in the City of Binghamton. The addition of this topsoil has made the field a potential safety hazard for anyone playing on it. The same thing was done to the softball field in west end but the city has since changed the field back to normal. We need all of the parents to contact the city let let them know that you are unhappy about this change at Fairview. Let them know you are concerned about the safety of your children playing on this field. You can contact the Parks and Recreation Director (Bill Barber) by telephone at 772-7017. He can be contacted by email at the following link: http://www.binghamton-ny.gov/node/330 Appropriate attention to this matter has not been provided and, as a result, one of my child's teammates suffered an injury in their game last evening at this field. Please encourage Director Barber to pay equal attention to boys' and girls' sporting events and to take steps to ensure the safety of our girls.

  • Teachers' Voices Must Be Heard - Support Gus Morales
Gus Morales was a highly rated teacher for two years. Then on February 3 he spoke out to the School Committee about data walls, many of which listed students by name along with their scores on standardized tests and many of which were posted in areas accessible to the public (illegal under FERPA). After speaking out at the School Committee meetings, Gus was observed and given his first problematic evaluation. These observations and negative evaluations escalated after Gus was elected president of his local. Gus grew up in Holyoke and graduated from Holyoke High School. He is a veteran, bilingual, and a teacher who has the support of students and parents. He is one of the few Puerto Rican teachers in Holyoke even though the student body is over 75 percent Hispanic. Gus is a male role model for many students. In May, Gus was elected president of the Holyoke Teachers Association with overwhelming support from his fellow teachers. Gus is being non-renewed because he is a leader in the union and a leader in speaking out in support of students and the schools they deserve.

  • KEEP THE RAINBOW DR RIVER ACCESS CLOSED
The Rainbow Dr. access is too small, and has no facilities to funnel the hundreds of people that are trying to use it. It has caused undue stress to the land and the local private homeowners. The FWP public fishing access on S. Ferndale Dr. has all the facilities, parking and easy access to the river and causes NO traffic congestion. Most of the users are from Flathead County and pay no taxes on this land. It is also a residential area and not suited for public use

  • REMOVE RACIST HATE GROUPS FROM FACEBOOK
On Sunday, June 15, 2014, I was exposed to the worse kind of racism imaginable. While going through this experience, I learned this is happening on a regular basis, mainly to any ''Black History'' group or any group educating African Americans on Facebook, but other ethnic groups as well. When the activity was reported, I was told this: Thank you for taking the time to report something that you feel may violate our Community Standards. Reports like yours are an important part of making Facebook a safe and welcoming environment. We reviewed the page you reported for harassment and found it doesn't violate our Community Standards. Now I wondered what did, I was called the N-Word, ape, monkey, etc. Then they posted my group on their hate page which started a rush of racist remarks. 6 reports were filed by me alone, and each and every one said the same as the first. This needs to stop, this needs to be handled the right way. Not long ago they removed posts that complained about minorities being overlooked in award shows, one of those posts was mine, but they allow hate, racism, and bigotry towards blacks and other minorities. Now to me and many others, if these activities do not violate their standards, maybe the level needs to be raised a bit. Please help me put a stop to this.

  • Bring Mommycon to Atlanta, Georgia!
This petition is in the hopes that we can get the attention of Mommycon and have them come to Atlanta, Georgia for an event. Why do we want them here and what are they? Mommycon is a "mom and pop" run event that hosts events in different cities all across the US. They are a source of information for all moms, no matter if you are still pregnant, recently gave birth, or have a few littles running around already. Although every event is different, they boast birth professionals, lactation consultants, baby carriers and wraps and experts to help you try them out yourself, the newest baby products, snacks for the young ones, and so much more! They provide scheduled speakers on topics such as plus size births, breastfeeding, health and nutrition for both mom and baby, postpartum depression and attachment parenting. Kids are allowed as well as family members or anyone else you'd like to bring along. Please sign my petition to get their attention! They would be an asset to our community and provide resources that are essential to some, if not all, mommies here.
