I would like to know more than brief talking points about these two candidates.

We have just learned from Valerie Capels in the Town Office that they are planning to close Bridge Street for the entire month of August. Obviously this is devastating timing for the businesses in Waitsfield Village. Everyone knows when the slow months are here in the Valley. Let's do everything we can to urge them to make the construction happen then. Please consider coming to the Select Board Meeting on Monday night at Town Hall at 6:30 to voice your collective and urgent request to NOT have the project happen during the most profitable month of the year for business.

My partner has been an employee of the City of Pittsburgh for 14 years. She has worked hard and has an excellent reputation as a civil servant. For the past 8 years, we have been able to access domestic partner benefits including health insurance. Pennsylvania is the only marriage equality state that does not have statewide non-discrimination protections for sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. This means couples who live in Allegheny County (or Pittsburgh) with one partner working across the county border face a terrible decision - if they marry and create a public record of their sexual orientation, the partner working outside of the county could lose their job. This is not a level playing field with heterosexual unmarried couples. There are many other reasons people may not be able to simply get married in a 30 day period - issues related to stigma, familial rejection, poverty, and more. Even so, Allegheny County has announced plans to eliminate domestic partner benefits effective July 31, 2014. They are requiring their same sex employees to marry and provide proof of their marriage by that date or benefits will cease on August 1, 2014. The City of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Public Schools and other public employers have not yet disclosed their plans for domestic partner benefits, but Allegheny County's decision sets a terrible precedent. We are asking for one simple thing - a commitment to continue offering domestic partner benefits until we achieve statewide non-discrimination protection. We ask these leaders to support their employees and acknowledge that the freedom to marry is not quite complete. Forcing us to marry - especially with only 30 days notice - is unfair, unreasonable and untenable for a progressive, inclusive and respectful workplace. We hope the plaintiffs in the Whitewood case will stand with us and not ask us to sacrifice our benefits for their marriages. We hope Equality PA will show leadership to protect the existing domestic partner benefits of municipal employees while pushing for statewide non-discrimination. We hope our transgender and queer siblings, neighbors and friends will stand with us as we show that inequality is not simply fixed by marriage equality. Stand behind HB 300/SB 300 and stand behind the hundreds of hard working employees who have help to build our region with their talent, time and skills. Don't punish us because the Commonwealth hasn't done the work of creating an equal playing ground. Don't force us to get married. That's not why these families went to court and it is not what marriage equality is supposed to create. We are actively seeking signatures from Pennsylvania residents, but we welcome the support and solidarity of other US citizens and residents. Please don't hesitate to sign. Mr. Fitzgerald, Mr. Peduto and others should know exactly who is paying attention to this issue.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Right Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation combats water scarcity in desert areas like sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East... and, apparently, Detroit.

What would you do if you couldn't flush the toilet? Or if you had to buy bottled water to cook, clean and stay hydrated? The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) is shutting off water at thousands of Detroit residences each week even if their account debt was incurred by previous owners. Meanwhile, corporate accounts, with tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid water bills, remain unpaid yet are still being served. And Detroit's emergency manager, Kevyn Orr, has begun the process to privatize DWSD, the drinking water supply for roughly 4 million people in southeast Michigan. Privatizing the system could lead to higher rates and poorer service. In order for water to remain safe and affordable for all, we need to maintain public control of our water system and to enact a water affordability plan that keeps families connected to this critical resource.

Maryland is defined by its incredible scenic beauty and awesome natural heritage, from the Bay to our beautiful family farms, forests, and historic communities. But our treasured places and families are threatened by shale gas drilling (“fracking”), a destructive and dangerous practice that we must keep out of Maryland. Fracking next door in Pennsylvania has left a trail of ravaged forests, polluted streams, sickened families, and contaminated water supplies in its wake. And now big oil and gas companies like Halliburton and Exxonmobil are pressing to force Maryland to let them do the same thing here.

Thousands of innocent dogs/puppies and cats/kittens are senselessly euthanized every year due to overpopulation and overcrowded shelters in Georgia. Please help end this horrific epidemic by petitioning our state government to make it mandatory that all Georgia residents spay/neuter their pets.

Superintendent of Newark Public Schools has created a large scale plan without meaningful and credible engagement of the Newark community. Cami Anderson has lost the support of Newark residents including parents, students, the Newark Municipal Council, the Board of Education, Newark's mayor-elect, community organizations and 77 concerned Ministers and clergy. Poor planning, scandalous fiscal mis-management ($15,000-$60,000 or 80% salary increases to Cami's inner circle) and the destruction of community schools, demand that the One Newark Plan be halted.

Just recently the swan river fishing access popular to many floaters was closed due to complaints from nearby residents about parking, traffic, garbage, noise, etc. the lake county commissioner has closed it down and posted no trespassing signs. Although I do sympathize with the residents, this is a public spot. Instead of trying to sweep the problem under the rug, I'm asking the commissioner to address the problem head on and put in much needed additional parking. There is another petition going around to keep it closed. Last count they had 58 signatures. They are going for 100. My goal is 1000. My guess is this number will be reached very fast. What are you?
