• Social Security Cuts
President Obama has proposed cutting Social Security by lowering cost-of-living adjustments for current and future retirees. These cuts, sometimes called "chained CPI," will hurt seniors who have paid into the system for their whole lives and are already struggling with rising health care costs.

  • Say NO to the chained CPI and proposed cuts in Social Security
Social Security didn’t create the budget deficit, and seniors and disabled veterans shouldn’t suffer to make it balance. Changing the Cost of Living Adjustments to Social Security by using a Chained CPI hurt seniors. The Chained CPI is based on the idea that seniors can find cheaper substitutes for products when prices change, but as they age seniors have significant expenses that are medical, and co-pays on drugs and medical care aren’t flexible.

  • Cut Social Security & Veterans' Benefits? Cut the Pentagon Instead!
President Obama has endorsed cutting Social Security and veterans' benefits by using the "chained CPI" to lower the cost-of-living adjustment. But the Congressional Budget Office says cutting Social Security and veterans' benefits in this way would only save the government $163 billion over ten years. There are much better ways for the government to save $163 billion, like cutting the bloated Pentagon budget. Urge President Obama and your representatives in Congress to cut the Pentagon budget instead of cutting Social Security and veterans' benefits. Here are three easy ways to save $163 billion by cutting the bloated Pentagon budget: 1. End the war in Afghanistan. A rough estimate of the cost of deploying U.S. troops to Afghanistan is a billion dollars per thousand troops per year. If we withdraw 16,300 troops from Afghanistan and keep them out, that would save $163 billion over ten years. 2. Cut the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program. A recent estimate of the long-term cost of purchasing, operating and maintaining 2,457 F-35s is $1.5 trillion. [1] That's $610 million per plane. If we cut 267 planes - a little over 10% - that would save $163 billion. 3. Cut Pentagon contracting. Every year the Pentagon spends more than $360 billion purchasing goods and services from contractors. Service contractors can cost, on average, 2.94 times more than an average Pentagon civilian employee performing the same job. A crude estimate suggests that just by cutting Pentagon contracting by 7% and bringing the work in house, the Pentagon could save $163 billion over ten years. [2] Cutting the Pentagon budget instead of Social Security and veterans' benefits isn't a wild idea - it's exactly what will happen if there there is no "grand bargain" budget deal. All we have to do to make sure the Pentagon budget is cut is prevent a deal that cuts Social Security and veterans' benefits. Urge your representatives in Congress and President Obama to cut the Pentagon budget instead of cutting Social Security and veterans' benefits. Here's three other actions you can take: 1. Write to Congress and the President, urging them to cut the Pentagon budget instead of Social Security and veterans' benefits: http://www.justforeignpolicy.org/act/chained-cpi 2. Tell your Representative and Senators you'll support a primary challenge if they vote to cut Social Security and veterans' benefits: http://pac.signon.org/sign/chained-cpi-for-every?source=c.url&r_by=1135580 3. Help fellow MoveOn members deliver these petitions against cutting Social Security and veterans' benefits on Thursday, April 25 to a local Congressional office: http://civic.moveon.org/event/events/create.html?id=&action_id=317 References: 1. “Cut Social Security & Veterans' Benefits? • Oppose the Social Security cuts
Opposing the Social Security cuts! I don't think that I have been affected yet by the cuts, but I know that I probaby will be when I become older! I'm in my early 30's right now but I know that when I hit my retired age I wont be able to retire because there will be no SS for us born in and around the 80's!! This is really sad that we wont get to have this opportunity to have what others (meaning people before us) had or have. And for those who already have it, they're not getting much. I don't want to have to work in a low down pet store TRYING to make ends meet. My parents wont be around forever! I want to have somewhere to live on my own and to not ever be on foodstamp or any kind of government assistance again, because I've never had to go this route before. Bush has really messed up the younger generation to come! Please don't do this and STOP BEING SO FREAKIN GREEDY!! If you guys would just work the heck together and also raise the minimum wage because no one can live off just 7.25 an hr!!! I mean if you were in our shoes how would YOU feel? Think about that. I mean you can't live in this world alone... I mean what if we were all on that, you wouldn't have taxes to help pay for your sal or anyone to really rule over (Republicans! I'm talking to you now) So thank about that. I mean you only can do soo much w/ money and it only can take you so far. You will fail! Thank you!

  • Congress is killing the Post Office
The Congress wants the Postal Service to close 3,500 post offices and lay off 120,000 workers. Those members of Congress, who argue that the nation cannot persevere without the accustomed mail service, seem to be trying to kill it. They say they are intent on creating jobs but seem to be intent on reducing jobs instead. The essential issue is clear. Congress should get out of the way and let management do what it can to put the Post Office on a substantial footing.
