    Press reports say New Jersey Senator Cory Booker is positioning himself to run for President in 2020. [1] Unfortunately, Booker has so far refused to distance himself from DC special interest lobbies whose demands conflict with the interests and values of the majority of Americans: Wall Street, brand-name pharmaceutical companies (Pharma), public school privatizers, and the pro-settlements lobby (Aipac). Booker did Pharma's bidding when he helped defeat the Sanders/Klobuchar amendment to bring down drug prices by allowing the import of drugs from Canada. [2] Such "parallel imports" are also a key tool for developing countries to make essential medicines affordable. Pro-Pharma U.S. policies get "exported" through trade agreements like the TPP, so Booker's pro-Pharma stance hurts working families around the world, not just in the United States. Booker is doing Aipac's bidding by co-sponsoring Marco Rubio's S. Res 6, which slams UN Security Council Resolution 2334 for reaffirming international opposition to illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. [3] Rubio's resolution is an attack on President Obama and Secretary Kerry, who allowed UNSC Resolution 2334 to pass by refusing to veto it. [4] J Street, Americans for Peace Now, and JVP oppose S.   • No contraception? No Viagra!
    The debate surrounding women's healthcare, specifically related to reproductive rights, continues to focus on moral and ethical dilemmas unrelated to actual health outcomes. To this end, the current efforts to repeal ACA, and the contraceptive coverage mandate espoused within, without a clear plan to replace with equivalent coverage serves to leave women with a substantial increase in their annual health costs. Contraceptive coverage should be routine. The research supporting routine contraceptive coverage is clear and overwhelming (http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/01/17/509734620/u-s-abortion-rate-falls-to-lowest-level-since-roe-v-wade). For advocates of abortion restrictions, to simply ignore this evidence is foolish, despite being in contrast to their views. In 2017, it is time to fully endorse this routine coverage for women without the potential to revoke in the future. If congress cannot see to this, we propose a full ban on coverage of agents for erectile dysfunction (Viagra, Levitra, Cialis, etc). Surely, if contraception is in conflict with religious beliefs, then so too are artificial erections induced by modern day pharmaceutical agents. If women have to pay for their birth control, men have to pay for their medicated erections. To our congress: be consistent in your ideology and demand coverage of all routine women's contraceptive care, or revoke coverage for erectile dysfunction drugs. You pick!

  • Senate Democrats: Roll up your sleeves & delay Trump's Cabinet nominees
    Now is not the time for Senate Democrats to play business-as-usual, especially with Trump's most dangerous Cabinet nominees, including Rex "ExxonMobil" Tillerson, moving to a Senate floor vote soon. Many Democrats allowed Tillerson and Jeff Sessions to cruise through the first step of the Senate confirmation process. Now, as we move into the next phase of confirmations for some of Trump's Cabinet of corporate cronies and bigots, we must demand more leadership from our elected leaders and demand they use every Senate tool at their disposal to delay them all. Senate Democrats can absolutely delay many of Trump's Cabinet picks by simply using the tools already available to them. Examples include: • Invoking cloture, a process by which they may limit consideration of a pending matter to 30 additional hours of debate; • And forcing a roll call on all nominations, which delays the time it takes to confirm each nomination. Now is the moment for leadership and Senate Democrats must rise up to the occasion. If they stand up for us, we will stand with them.

    If passed by the Senate and signed by the new President, these acts would result in wholesale destruction of rules protecting the environment, worker health and safety, consumer rights, and the well-being of families and communities. These rules translate laws passed by Congress into actual practice, after extensive study by the relevant federal agencies and ample opportunity for public comment. The new House acts also would cripple all future rule-making.
