I am a church pastor in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Our community has been devastated by handgun violence in recent months. An open-carry night at our local baseball game is adding insult to the very real injuries we are struggling to recover from.

The accusations from a few very vocal members of the Saranap Community about how this proposed development is horrendously out of place, overly tall, and disrespectful to the character of the neighborhood are unfounded, biased, and exclusionary to the needs of commerce, business and the next generation of Citizens seeking a place in the community. I urge you to disregard the raucous choir of the vocal minority, and instead look to the silent majority of homeowners eager to see convenience, vitality, and property value added to their neighborhood. Tell the County that this area DESERVES convenience, commerce, and growth to take root! Let your signature urge these council members to approve of this wonderful addition to our community.

This petition is very personal to me, and I believe it is critical for the American people. I grew up loving politics, government, the rule of law, the idea of democracy, and the idea of civic engagement and public service. I believed that good people could make good laws and that the People could come together to take care of one another and to make sure our country always headed in a direction of process and prosperity. This system is more personal to me, now, as a teacher. How can I tell my students that history is what you make of it and that we live in a country that is governed "by the people" and "for the people" when it clearly is not. The system is rigged. It is rigged against every citizen. It is rigged in favor of those who are well-connected and those at the "top" use every trick and every ploy to make us forget that it is they who rigged the system in the first place. They use media, scare-tactics, excuses, war-mongering, inflammatory rhetoric, faulty promises, and blatant lies to convince us that we should fight among ourselves. They convince us that we should fight for bread crumbs when they're the ones who get the lion's share. If we are to promise that any child can grow up to be President or that any child can change the world, then it is time to make the Congress the People's Congress and end era after era of corruption, abuse, and deception. This petition is for every American citizen. It's time to end this. It's time to take back our government and our country. It's time to work together to achieve real results.

As it is right now, there is little-to-no chance of adults utilizing the pool that all residents pay dues for. I would love to make use of the pool, as would others, for swimming laps and such but are currently unable to do so. We are requesting that adults only be allowed from 6pm to close, 3 days a week (such as Monday, Wednesday, Friday). Six hours of the 72 hours that the pool is open each week seems a reasonable compromise.

CNN just hired former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski as a salaried pundit, even though Lewandowski has a long history of treating the media poorly, including being arrested for allegedly physically assaulting a reporter at an event. Lewandowski has barred reporters from doing their jobs by placing them on "blacklists" and threatening reporters who left the "press pen" the campaign requires them to report from. Reports indicate he cursed at and pushed CNN reporter Noah Gray for simply doing his job. And in March, Lewandowski was "charged with misdemeanor battery for forcibly grabbing reporter Michelle Fields as she tried to ask Trump a question following an event." With over 2000 units of market rate housing in the pipeline for the Mission District in and around the Latino Cultural District, we are asking that the planning department do a full impact report for the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District before any development moves forward. The Calle 24 Latino Cultural District has been recognized as an important cultural and commercial resource for the City.The Mayor and Board of Supervisors noted “The Calle 24 Latino Cultural District memorializes a place whose richness of culture, history and entrepreneurship is unrivaled in San Francisco.” The District is bounded on the north by 22nd Street, the south by Cesar Chavez Street, the east by Potrero Avenue, and on the west by Mission Street. The District was established “to stabilize the displacement of Latino Businesses, and residents, preserve Calle 24 as the center of Latino culture and commerce, enhance the unique nature of Calle 24 as a special place for San Francisco’s residents and tourists” and that its contribution will provide “cultural visibility, vibrancy, and economic opportunity for Latinos in the City and County of San Francisco.” The impacts from the proposed 1515 South Van Ness Lennar project cannot be examined in isolation. The proposed project is not constructed in a bubble. Both the project and its residents interact with the immediate community in multiple ways. Similarly, the environmental impacts of this project cannot be examined apart from other proposed projects currently in the pipeline. Proposed projects located within the boundaries of the LCD are: 2765 Folsom St. (115 units), 3314 Cesar Chavez (52 units), 2600 Harrison St. (20), 2799 24th St. (8), and 3357 26th St. (8). Projects immediately adjacent to the LCD are: 1198 Valencia St. (52 units), 2918 Mission St. (38), 1298 Valencia St. (35), 2600 Mission (20). Two blocks from the LCD is 2000-2070 Bryant Street (195 units). Socio-economic impacts of market rate development on the Latino Cultural District could not have been studied at the time the Eastern Neighborhoods PEIR was prepared because the LCD did not come into existence until several years later. The Department should study the impact these market rate developments will have on the residents, businesses, non-profits and cultural assets in the LCD. In addition to whatever evaluation the Department may deem appropriate, we are requesting the Department evaluate the proposed project, both individually and cumulatively, with respect to potential impacts of extensive market rate development on existing residents, businesses, non-profits and cultural assets in the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District. This inquiry should include, but not be limited to, the following before any development is considered. - The amount of income that households will need in order to afford the market rents of the proposed project. - The amount of anticipated disposable income of the households moving into market rate units at the proposed project. - The consumer preferences of households moving into the market rate units at the proposed project, as compared to those Latino residents in the LCD earning 50% AMI. - Impact on neighborhood-serving Latino businesses that new market rent paying households with higher disposable incomes, will have on commercial rents in the Latino Cultural District – both from the standpoint of the proposed project and from the standpoint of the cumulative impact of the projects listed above. - Impact that rents at the proposed project (and cumulative proposed projects) will have on residential rents for vacant units in the immediate areas. - Impact the proposed project (and cumulative proposed projects) will have on displacement of Latinos and families in the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District. - Impact the proposed project (and cumulative proposed projects) will have on the percentage of Latino residents and businesses living and working in the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District.

Who was Kelsey Smith? On June 2, 2007, Kelsey Smith, an eighteen year old young woman from Overland, Kansas, was abducted in broad daylight, from a local Target department store. An hour after Kelsey was abducted, a signal from her cell phone was picked up. When law enforcement officials asked Verizon for the "ping" records that would pinpoint her location via cell phone, the family's cell phone company did not hand those records over, until three and a half days later. When Verizon did turn over the records, it took authorities 45 minutes to locate Kelsey's body. However, she was found dead, after being raped and murdered. What is the Kelsey Smith Act? The Kelsey Smith Act (H.R.1818/S.273 ), sponsored by U.S. Rep. Ron Este (R-KS 4) and U.S. Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS), would require that wireless phone companies immediately respond to law enforcement requests for location information of victims who are in jeopardy of death or serious physical harm. Also the Kelsey Smith Act would aid more responsive coordination between law enforcement agencies and wireless cell phone carriers during emergencies involving missing persons. By passing the Kelsey Smith Act, lives can be saved. When a person has been abducted, or in an emergency situation, it is vital that law enforcement act quickly, which is why law enforcement need wireless carriers to cooperate with them in emergency situations.

The Supreme Court just split 4-4 on one of the biggest cases for immigrant communities in U.S. history. Reactionary governors and federal judges have held up relief for immigrant communities for far too long. Our work and fight-back is not over. Now, more than ever, we need to renew our commitment to justice until all immigrants receive the dignity and justice we deserve. Unless the Obama Administration acts now, more than 4 million immigrants - our neighbors, friends, mothers, and children - will continue to be devastated by the deportation machine. No human being is illegal. Judge Hanen dramatically overstepped his bounds in a politically motivated decision, and judges in the other 12 circuits can and should work to correct his reckless overreach in addition to President Obama taking immediate action. If enough of us raise our voices, the Obama administration won’t have a choice. President Obama will have to stand with us. This could be our last and best chance at some relief for immigrant communities for some time. Banning assault weapons such as AR-15 is not infringing upon people's right of the Second Amendment. It is rather the right thing TO DO!!. Hunters or civilians have no need to house or carry a weapon that can shoot 15-20 per minute. An AR-15 is a weapon that should only be used for military personnel. BAWN!

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has been advocating to reduce gun death and injury since 1974. In this historic moment, when we see the Democratic Party making an inspirational stand for gun reform in the House and Senate, it is critical that their leadership be out in front on this issue. Together We Stand, a national organization of over 1,500 people dedicated to racial equality and social justice is asking that you sign this much needed petition. We are deeply concerned about recent news from Rockdale County Public School District where school staff allegedly hung a young African American boy with special needs from his belt loops at the top of the chalkboard at Shoal Creek Elementary School. The child was reported to be in great distress evidenced by his screaming, which caused an administrator to enter the classroom. It is also reported that this incident is not the first time this significantly inappropriate punishment has occurred by staff. The use of corporal punishment has been banned from public schools in all but 19 U.S. states to date, due to significant developmental, psychological and physical concerns related to the use of physical punishment with children. The U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights documented that approximately 167,000 students received physical punishment in the 2011-12 school year with over 70% occurring in Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia. Of these children, it is documented that physical punishment is administered disproportionately to children who are African American, male and/or receiving Special Education Services. (ocrdata.ed.gov) This data is concerning as it suggests that racial and gender bias influence educators and administrators who use corporal punishment and that our most vulnerable children are most likely to be abused at the hands of educators. Resulting, this bias moves the conversation beyond whether corporal punishment is an appropriate disciplinary strategy and raises questions related to the civil rights for children of color and children who qualify for special education services. Nationally, many professional organizations with expertise related to children and their development have taken a stand against the use of corporal punishment. These organizations include, but are not limited to, the American Psychological Association, American Psychiatric Association, American Medical Association, American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, National Association for the Education of Young Children, American School Counselor Association, National Association of School Psychologists, and the American Public Health Association. These organizations are in good company with social justice organizations such as UNICEF, UNESCO, Human Rights Committee, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We wholeheartedly agree with this statement made by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): “Corporal punishment -- most often, paddling -- can cause deep bruising or other lasting physical or mental injury. Furthermore, it creates a violent, degrading school environment in which all students -- and particularly students with disabilities -- may struggle to succeed. The use of corporal punishment in US public schools must end. There are positive, non-violent approaches to school discipline that have been proven to lead to safe environments in which children can learn.” (www.aclu.org) We ask that you take the proper steps to ensure a full and unbiased assessment and investigation occurs to hold the staff involved accountable to their actions. In addition, we hope you will take this opportunity to engage your system to include administration, teachers, paraprofessionals and staff in comprehensive education and training related to racial equity and developmentally appropriate disciplinary strategies. This type of systemic intervention will allow all students attending the Georgia Public Schools an opportunity for a safe and equal education. Lastly, we ask that you do all that is in your power to ban corporal punishment in the state of Georgia.

Many voters think they have only two options for President on general election day. Yet voters are dissatisfied with the two most popular parties, as evidenced by registration statistics: 26% Republican, 29% Democrat, and 44% Independent. The media needs to do a better job of informing the public about their choices, and giving third parties a fair chance at vying for votes.
