• Melrose High Hopes Neighborhood Safety
Inconsistent enforcement of parking and street sweeping, and a lack of regular police presence in the Melrose/Fairfax District, have contributed to double parking and traffic congestion, late-night street parties, drug dealing, solicitation and sideshows — leaving our neighborhood streets unsafe and impacting local businesses and residents. With this petition, we request that our city council members ensure the services and improvements listed below are provided consistently to the area and that their impact on increasing neighborhood safety be monitored and evaluated at least three times over the next six months. We request: 1. Consistent enforcement of current parking laws 2. Regular police officer foot or bike patrols, especially between 4 and 10 p.m. 3. Regular street sweeping and signage indicating what days street sweeping takes place 4. Installation of missing parking signs on Foothill Avenue between Vicksburg and Fairfax Avenues 5. A follow-up meeting with representatives from the Oakland Police Department, the Public Works Department, and Melrose High Hopes neighbors to ensure a plan of action is quickly developed, implemented and monitored.

  • Congress: End the Anti-Corruption Charade in Honduras
Millions of dollars of public funds from Honduras' health care system were funneled to the ruling National Party and the election campaign of President Juan Orlando Hernández. No charges have been brought against Hernández or other top party officials over the diversion of funds to the party. Human rights advocates in Honduras are insisting on an independent, United Nations-backed body to investigate, and 54 Members of Congress have urged Secretary of State Kerry to support this demand. [1] In 2009, the State Department under Secretary Hillary Clinton helped a military coup in Honduras succeed by blocking efforts to restore the left-leaning president, Manuel Zelaya, to power. [2] [3] Since then, more than 100 members of Congress have called on the Obama administration to condemn human rights violations by Honduras' security forces, and have questioned U.S. "security assistance" to Honduras. [4] The appropriations legislation in Congress for 2016 provides tools to pressure the Honduran government. It makes half the "assistance" to Honduras conditional on State Department certification that the authorities are taking effective steps to combat corruption, cooperate with commissions against impunity, and investigate and prosecute “members of military and police forces who are credibly alleged to have violated human rights.” Urge Congress to use its leverage against corruption in Honduras by signing our petition. • No Appointment, No Vote
Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman, recently stated that "It is "standard practice" to not confirm nominations to the Supreme Court in an election year". However, under Article II, Section 2, Clause 2 of the Constitution President Obama is granted powers of appointment, "shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint ... Judges of the Supreme Court." With 11 months left in President Obama's term, there is no logical reason the Senate should block President Obama's appointment, and leave a critical position within our democracy vacant. We the people of Iowa need to tell Sen. Grassley to honor Justice Scalia and uphold his constitutional duties or face the power of the people, the ability to not reelect him in the year 2016.

  • City of Buffalo Resolution To Change Columbus Day to Indigenous Heritage Day
The City of Buffalo has a strong history of American Indian culture. It is time for the city to reflect and honor that tradition in order to progress, recognize and celebrate the history of Indigenous People. International Day of the World's Indigenous People already exists in August, first commemorated by the U.N. This petition is for the abolition of Christopher Columbus Day, the 2nd Monday in October, an outdated and historically incorrect celebration, in favor of Indigenous Heritage Day. • Pres. Obama: Nominate a justice who will overturn Citizens United!
The 2010 Citizens United ruling stands as one of the worst Supreme Court rulings ever, which is why over 75% of Americans agree it should be overturned. The next Supreme Court justice will undoubtedly be a critical vote on everything from climate change to women's rights to workers' rights to health care. All of these issues (and others) have been dominated by wealthy special interests able to spend unlimited money to buy elections and legislators thanks to Citizens United and other corrupt court rulings. This, more than anything else, is what has rigged our system to benefit the wealthiest few Americans at everyone else’s expense. Do NOT nominate a moderate to the court who is unwilling to commit to fixing this. Let overturning Citizens United be your (and our) litmus test for whether a nominee will be ruling in favor of ALL Americans, or just the wealthiest 1%. Let this be a legacy you and your children can be proud of.

  • Bring Back 4J Elementary and Middle School Teacher-Librarians
We are concerned about the lack of teacher-librarians in 4J’s elementary and middle schools. Our students are missing out on the essential research, information literacy, digital citizenship and technology instruction that teacher-librarians provide. We are concerned that 4J students lack basic research skills upon entering high school and that 4J's high school teacher-librarians must teach elementary-level research, library and technology skills to high school students. School districts around Oregon understand the value of teacher-librarians and are restoring library positions. Portland Public Schools hired around 30 teacher-librarians this year alone! Even nearby, many Springfield elementary and middle school students receive vital instruction from teacher-librarians. Teacher-librarians benefit EVERY student and teacher in a school. Study after study shows teacher-librarians directly boost student achievement. It’s time for 4J to restore elementary and middle school teacher-librarians! What Do Teacher-Librarians Do? Teacher-librarians help students become critical thinkers, adept researchers, enthusiastic readers, and ethical digital citizens. Teacher-librarians directly instruct students how to: - Locate online information effectively and safely using the best search terms - Find information within books using an index, table of contents and other features - Evaluate information for accuracy, reliability and credibility - Organize and synthesize information - Stay safe online and protect their personal identity - Use various technological tools, from creating blogs to using citation programs to designing podcasts and e-books to present their evidence of learning - Find the right book that appeals to them by exploring genres, authors and themes - Use proper online etiquette and social media behavior - Paraphrase and avoid plagiarism - Assess the differences between primary and secondary sources, fact and opinion, and fiction vs. nonfiction Teacher-librarians also collaborate with classroom teachers and serve as integrated technology specialists. Teacher-librarians build relationships with students year-after-year and work with ALL students.

  • Please consider the public image of the Assistant Chief position.
To be true to the HPD motto "serve and protect with aloha" HPD senior management is subject to a very high standard, both personally and professionally. Please reconsider promoting anyone with a history of domestic abuse to the Assistant Chief position. Individuals with prior convictions of domestic abuse will damage the reputation and public image HPD works very hard to earn and maintain. We urge you to reconsider the proposed candidate for Assistant Chief, and consider what is truly best for the reputation of HPD and the public it serves.

  • Dr. Bronner's, Make Your Lip Balm Vegan - Selling Beeswax Harms Bees
Taking beeswax, necessarily, harms the bees that it is taken from. Many bees and their young die when beeswax and honey are stolen from their hives for human consumption. Please consider that bees do not willingly give their honey to humans. Instead, humans must subjugate, manipulate, control, and oftentimes trick the bees to be able to take their honey.  Bees are clever animals and will defend their hives when their wax and honey are stolen. Bee keepers will often kill aggressive, non-conforming, queen bees and replace them with more docile queens. Sometimes, after humans repeatedly steal a colonies' wax and honey, certain queen bees will move their hives. Because of this, it is a common practice for bee keepers to cut off the wings of queen bees so that they cannot move their hives.  Please carefully review the following website for more information about why beeswax and honey are not vegan: http://www.vegetus.org/honey/honey.htm  Also, please realize that when Dr. Bronner's takes wax and honey from bees, you are taking both building materials and food that the bees worked very hard to get. Their wax is used to store larva, propolis, and honey. The wax and honey taken from the bees would have been used as food and shelter during times of need. Many larva die during the harvesting of beeswax. As part of the collection process, the colonies of bees lose their homes, food stores, and many lives.  We know that Dr. Bronner's is a company that acts ethically and, therefore, we request that you continue to adhere to the vegan belief that ALL sentient life is sacred and exploitation by humans should be avoided.  We understand that you are using a formula created by Native American Keewaydinoquay and Sue Kastensen and that the beeswax being used is organic and from wild bees in Zambia. We also appreciate that you have gone to some effort to make a quality product with thought and attention to detail. However, for the reasons listed above, your lip balm is not vegan, it does cause the bees harm, and therefore does not align with your principles nor the vegan ethic.  Therefore, we, the petition signers, request that you find a plant-based (vegan) replacement to beeswax and pursue Vegan Certification for your lip balms and all other products.  Resources:  1. Their job is to run the country and follow the will of the people not play political games that do nothing to help this country. They need to be reminded of that. No better way to do that then have them lose their comfy positions and realize that their games need to end.

Allowing the garbage to go into the ocean affects the lives of marine animals and destroys the health of the ocean. Currently, there is no enforcement on Main Beach of Municipal or State Codes, creating an overall lack of respect.
