This upcoming Monday, the North Carolina State Senate will vote on NC Senate Bill 279, which has the potential to seriously affect sexual education in our state. Previously, sexual education in public schools in North Carolina was limited to abstinence-only-until-marriage programs. The Healthy Youth Act of 2009 brought about comprehensive sexual education, requiring all school districts to design programs in accordance with North Carolina’s Standard Course of Study for Comprehensive Health Education. NC Senate Bill 279 would remove the guidelines established by the Healthy Youth Act and instead would only require that individuals responsible for developing sexual education curricula and teaching materials for local school districts have a background in one of the following areas: education, adolescent psychology, behavioral counseling, medicine, human anatomy, biology, ethics, or health education. Such a change poses a significant threat to sexual education in North Carolina, and some have suggested would allow the return of abstinence-only-until marriage curricula. Maintaining a comprehensive sexual education program in North Carolina is vital to the health of our youth. We have made significant strides in recent years in reducing teen pregnancy rates, which have fallen by almost 50% since 2000, and fell by 11% in 2013 alone. While we are on the right path, major disparities still exist, as pregnancy rates among Hispanic and African-American teenage females are almost double those in white teenagers. Participation from families, communities and religious organizations is vital in helping to achieve this goal, but we also must have comprehensive sexual education that is based on peer-reviewed, scientific evidence. By allowing individuals without any formal training in sexual education to dictate sexual education curricula, passage of NC Senate Bill 279 would represent a massive step in the wrong direction. That is why I want you to join me in asking our elected representatives to oppose NC Senate Bill 279 and thereby support the health of young people throughout the state of North Carolina.

My petition is about my brother Samuel Harrell who was killed on April 21, 2015 by a gang of white correctional officers known as "the beat up squad." They beat up and killed my brother while inside Fishkill Correctional Facility.

The criminalization of Black youth is out of control! On the heels of a Texas teen being arrested for bringing a clock to school, Stockton, CA police brutalized 16 year old Emilio Mayfield for jaywalking. The cops were the threat to public safety, not the minor getting off the bus. We demand the cops be charged with assaulting a minor, that Restorative Justice methods are used to resolve non-violent victimless “crimes,” and—we can’t believe we have to say this—the decriminalization of jaywalking.

Bianca organized her co-workers at the Verizon Wireless store, where she works in Brooklyn, NY, to join the Communications Workers of America (CWA) so they can fight for pay raises, better benefits and improved working conditions. Verizon Wireless claims Bianca, an employee with no prior disciplinary history, engaged in conduct that warranted her dismissal and fired her. But Bianca says the truth is that Verizon Wireless fired her for organizing her co-workers. Out of a 79,000 person workforce, only 155 of Verizon Wireless’ employees are unionized. And even though Verizon Wireless rakes in a billion dollars a month in profit alone, they refuse to offer any raises, or meet their retail workers' demands for better conditions on the job. Let’s put pressure on Verizon Wireless to reinstate Bianca and give their workers a fair contract. So many people have been killed in car accidents on Hwy 169 and county RD 11 near Milaca Minnesota and after many failed attempts to fix it there is still many car accidents .So if we could put an over pass here I believe this will stop . Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Silicon Valley on September 26-27. Previously banned from the U.S. for complicity with genocide, he will meet with leaders at Apple, Google, and Facebook — three companies that have been leaders in supporting their LGBTQ employees. LGBTQ Indian activists are demanding the repeal of Section 377 of India’s Penal Code, which effectively criminalizes LGBTQ people by outlawing sexual acts that are “against the order of nature.” Imposed on India by British colonizers, 377 puts millions of LGBTQ Indians in harm’s way, as it’s been used as an excuse for harassment, blackmail, extortion, and physical and sexual abuse, multiplying existing inequalities based on caste, class, and gender. Modi has refused to take any stance on the law, even though leaders from every other major party have spoken out against it. Modi and his party have the legislative power to initiate concrete action to decriminalize millions of LGBTQ Indians.
