• Prosecute Exxon for Deliberate Climate Denial
The Pulitzer-winning InsideClimate News is running a blockbuster series with incontrovertible evidence—pulled from Exxon's own archives—that the oil giant's top executives were warned of possible catastrophe from greenhouse pollution, then led efforts to block solutions. Documents show that Exxon's own scientists were aware of and studying the dangerous impacts of greenhouse gases in the 1970s and 1980s—until Exxon's leadership decided to shut down the research and promote climate denial instead, in order to protect the company's unfathomably large profits. We've known for years that the oil industry finances the climate-denial network of politicians, think tanks, and right-wing media in order to protect their gargantuan profits, but now we have sufficient evidence of deliberate deceit to make a federal investigation happen. The United States Department of Justice has the power to prosecute Exxon's deliberate deception under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act—just as DOJ sued the tobacco industry for knowingly lying about the dangers of cigarette smoking. Even before these smoking-gun documents were released, climate hawks have been making calls for a RICO investigation of fossil-fueled climate denial. Three weeks ago, a group of top climate scientists called for an investigation (PDF), saying, "it is imperative that these misdeeds be stopped as soon as possible so that America and the world can get on with the critically important business of finding effective ways to restabilize the Earth's climate, before even more lasting damage is done." Months earlier, climate hawk Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a former state Attorney General, called for a RICO investigation of Big Oil, saying, "I don’t know whether the fossil fuel industry and its allies engaged in the same kind of racketeering activity as the tobacco industry. We don't have enough information to make that conclusion. Perhaps it's all smoke and no fire. But there’s an awful lot of smoke." Thanks to the reporters at Inside Climate News, now we have smoking-gun documents found in public archives. And there's certain to be more. It's up to us to demand the U.S. government immediately launch an investigation that will lead to prosecution of Exxon's deliberate and deadly climate denial.

  • Protect New Mexico from chemical disasters
More than 100 million Americans live in vulnerability zones that surround dangerous chemical facilities, putting them at risk of explosions, fires, and release of toxic chemicals caused by these facilities. In New Mexico, 106,302 children are at risk of these disasters because they attend school close to an unsafe plant – this is unacceptable. We can make our communities safer by ensuring that these facilities switch to safer chemicals and technologies that are both available and affordable.

  • NYS Synthetic Drug Legislation
Synthetic Drug Legislation is severely lacking in New York State, yet hundreds and thousands of our citizens are being negatively affected by these poisons! Deaths and severe disabilities are the results, along with harming friends/families and innocent bystanders and a rise in crime. The new legislation is being drafted BIPARTISAN by NYS Assemblyman William Barclay who is working with New York City Assemblyman Rodriguez. Together a new bill will be drafted, making synthetic compounds a controlled substance ON ITS OWN and not linked with marijuana (which is absolutely different), with penalties for dealers.

  • Congress should not be paid during a government shutdown.
At midnight, Republican leadership shut down the federal government just to support Trump's reckless and racist agenda, insisting on his unpopular and wasteful border wall and refusing to vote on the bipartisan and popular Dream Act. Republicans have been funding the government a month at a time rather than coming up with real solutions to children's health, protections for Dreamers, relief for Puerto Rico, funding for community health centers, and more. This could be the first time in history there's been a government shutdown when one party has controlled both houses of Congress and the White House—and the result will hurt tens of millions of Americans, from furloughed federal employees to all of us who use federal services and programs. If Republicans are willing to shut down the government, then they should be willing to go without their own salaries.

  • Ban Private Prisons
With over 2 million inmates, the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Higher than any dictatorship, theocracy or persistent violator of human rights. This shameful incarceration rate will never come down so long as there is profit to be made by incarcerating people. End the profit motive for incarceration. Join the fight to ban private for-profit prisons.

  • A Call to Boycott Buhari and British-Nigeria
We, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), under the leadership of Nnamdi Kanu, are compelled to call for a total boycott of British-Nigeria and her murderous president Muhammadu Buhari because British-Nigeria is a rogue terrorist state that tramples on every conceivable human rights, particularly, the rights of the beleaguered people of Biafra and IPOB—the organization of Biafrans agitating for freedom from the wicked British-Nigeria contraption and edifice of genocide. Buhari is an avowed Islamist, genocidist, tribalist, and unabashed Boko Haramist. Buhari is terrorizing Biafrans—an indigenous people forced against their wish to remain in British-Nigeria—because they are exercising their United Nations Rights of Indigenous Peoples to self-determination. He has been killing, terrorizing, and mounting roadblocks; abducting, beating, shooting and incarcerating unarmed Biafrans who are peaceably agitating to be free from marginalization and genocide; thus, breaking International Law and violating the United Nations Charter on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples of which British-Nigeria is a co-signatory. Buhari has committed genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity and ought not to be embraced by other world leaders. He should be at International Criminal Court (ICC) and not at United Nations. We call on the civilized nations of the world to Boycott President Muhammadu Buhari and British-Nigeria before it is too late. Thank you. • President Obama: Seize the moment to end Arctic offshore drilling for good!
BREAKING NEWS! After years of Earthjustice-led legal battles, Shell just announced that it is abandoning its Arctic Ocean drilling program. Shell's departure from the Arctic Ocean removes, at least for now, a major threat to the region's wildlife, already suffering from the impacts of climate change, which is happening more rapidly there than anywhere on earth. But the fight is not over! President Obama now has an opportunity to build on his climate successes and end Arctic Ocean drilling for good. Will you reach out to him today, to urge him to protect the Arctic Ocean for the long haul? Shell's decision shows that Arctic Ocean oil drilling is a thing of the past. It’s time to invest in a future of clean renewable energy and a sustainable climate for future generations. For decades, Earthjustice has been in court fighting risky drilling in the region. And with your help, we will continue to fight. Take action now to help us achieve long-term Arctic protections.

  • Gov. Brown: Sign AB 1461 California's New Motor Voter Act Today
Update 10/10/15: Victory! Governor Brown signed AB 1461 the New Motor Voter Act into law today. AB 1461 passed the Assembly and Senate, and awaits Governor Brown's signature, there are just a few days left for him to sign it (October 11 is the last day). Staff in his office are telling callers that he hasn't made up his mind on this bill yet. This bill would automatically register to vote any citizen who gets or updates a drivers license in California. (Much easier than the current process, which has extra paperwork.) An estimated 6.6M citizens in California are not currently registered to vote. This bill could make a difference, and Governor Brown needs to hear from you now that you support it. These signatures are being sent directly to the Governor's office, and also to Assemblywoman Gonzalez, one of the authors of the bill.

  • TAKE ACTION! Tell NC lawmakers to REJECT HB 318, which would limit acceptance of foreign IDs and ...
Take action today: Write and call your state Representatives and ask them to REJECT House Bill 318. The question of immigrants having acceptable identification documents is both a practical and safety concern, and an economic issue for police. The manpower used to arrest and process people who do not have identification takes away from other policing priorities. It has been estimated that a wider acceptance of foreign and community-issued IDs in Greensboro has saved the equivalent of two full-time police officers’ salaries in terms of avoiding unnecessary arrests solely for lack of ID. If enacted, HB 318 will make it more difficult for local police and sheriffs to establish the identity of people in our communities, particularly immigrant residents, which will make their jobs harder and more dangerous. Officers who are able to establish the identity of someone they encounter are better able to enforce the law, efficiently employ their limited resources, and keep themselves and others safe. People who have acceptable IDs are more willing to interact with the police as witnesses or victims of crime, which enhances public safety not only for immigrant residents, but for all of us.
