Badgerwood LLC submitted an application to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to operate a 26,000 hog factory farm in Eileen Township. The proposed factory farm is sited in the Fish Creek Watershed, a watershed that contains outstanding, exceptional resource waters and is less than 8 miles upstream from Lake Superior. The Ashland Municipal Water Utility, tasked with providing clean drinking water to City of Ashland residents, is 3 nautical miles from the junction of Fish Creek and Lake Superior. Given the quantity of manure that the proposed CAFO will produce and the self-regulating nature of the CAFO industry, it's likely that Fish Creek, the Chequamegon Bay and Lake Superior will see increased nutrients, pathogens and agricultural run-off in the water. A complete EIS will include the following information: NR 150 (2) EIS Content (a) A description of the proposed project that includes all the following: 1. Project location. 2. Type of facilities. 3. Time schedules. 4. Maps and diagrams. 5. Other information that the department deems necessary. (b) A description of the purpose and need of the proposed project. (c) A list of known state, federal, tribal, and local approvals required for the proposed project. (d) A summary of the process used to identify major issues and the issues identified for detailed analysis. (e) A list of reasonable alternatives to the proposed project, particularly those that might avoid all or some of the adverse environmental effects of the project, including a description of proposed preventive and mitigating measures and an explanation of the criteria used to discard certain alternatives from additional study. (f) A description of the human environment that will likely be affected by the proposed project and alternatives to the proposed project. (g) An evaluation of the probable positive and negative direct, secondary and cumulative effects of the proposed project, and alternatives to the proposed project, on the human environment, including all the following: 1. Effects on scarce resources such as: archeological, historic or cultural resources, scenic and recreational resources, prime farm lands, threatened or endangered species, and ecologically critical areas. 2. A summary of the adverse environmental effects which cannot be avoided. 3. Consistency with plans or policies of local, state, federal, or tribal governments. 4. The relationship between short-term uses of the environment and the maintenance and enhancement of long-term productivity, and any irreversible and irretrievable commitments of resources. 5. The potential to establish a precedent for future actions or to foreclose future options. 6. The degree of risk or uncertainty in predicting environmental effects or effectively controlling potential deleterious environmental impacts, including those relating to public health or safety. 7. The degree of controversy over the effects on the quality of the human environment. (h) Identification of information that is incomplete or unavailable and a description of the relevance of such information. (i) Sources of information or verbiage.

Thousands of undocumented immigrant families in Florida will soon have a chance to be a part of the American Dream--but Attorney General Pam Bondi is determined to get in the way. With Republicans in Congress failing to pass immigration reform, President Obama was forced to act on his own. Now immigrant families will soon have a chance to come forward and register, get permits to work legally and contribute to our system, and finally get a chance to live without the daily fear of deportation. But rather than embracing immigrants, AG Bondi joined in a partisan lawsuit against the federal government over the President’s program. Most legal experts agree that this lawsuit is a political stunt and has no legal standing. It’s nothing more than a mean-spirited attack on Florida immigrants and their families. Immigrants are a part of the Florida community and deserve a chance to work hard, contribute, and be together. Tell AG Bondi to drop Florida’s name from this partisan lawsuit, stop attacking our state’s immigrant families, and be on the right side of history.

When shifts are scheduled with little advance notice and canceled at the last minute, it’s hard to imagine having any financial security. And when workers don’t have predictable schedules and are expected to work any time they’re called, it’s hard to make plans to take care of your family or find additional work, if necessary. State lawmakers in California have introduced Assembly Bill 357, the "Fair Scheduling Act" and we need them to act now to protect all California workers.

When the Herero (Ovaherero) people of Namibia revolted against the confiscation of their land and cattle by German colonists, more than 80,000 men, women and children were killed. On October 2, 1904 Lieutenant-General Lothar von Trotha publicly issued a written extermination order, Vernichtungsbefehl, of the Herero people in Namibia on behalf of Germany Kaiser Wilhelm II. This infamous extermination order decreed: “Herero found within the German borders with or without a gun, with or without cattle, will be shot. I shall no longer receive any women and children. I will drive them back to their people, or I will shoot them”. The United Nations and historians consider this to be the first genocide of the 20th century, and it is estimated that eighty percent (80%) of the estimated 150 000 tribe was killed. The Herero people suffered incalculable losses from mutilation, rape, slaughter, and banishment from their land. Survivors were confined to concentration camps where they performed forced labor. Today, descendants of the survivors continue to reside in Botswana, South Africa, and many other countries. The majority of the Herero people live in their homeland of Namibia, where they are now a minority. While the then German Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, Mrs. Wieczorek-Zeul, apologized for the genocide at a commemorative event in 2004, however the German government refuses to enter into a meaningful dialogue about reparations. In order to address the genocide of the Herero people, the late Paramount Chief Kuaima Riruako filed a lawsuit against the German government and German companies that benefited from slave labor in the US courts. However, the case was dismissed for technical reasons. We, the undersigned, urge the government of Germany to offer reparations to the Herero and Nama tribes of Namibia for the genocide committed against their people from 1904-1908.
