My name is Maria Canet, and I am a professional accountant. I’m Latina and an American citizen with more than 30 years of professional experience filing taxes in New York state. I have a small business in Jackson Heights, Queens with over 1000 individual and small business clients. As we all know, President Joe Biden, on March 11, 2021, signed a law that was called the Economic Rescue Plan (“the Plan”) whose objective has been to provide economic relief to Americans. An important benefit of this plan is the expanded minor child tax credit. To qualify for this credit, the child's parent / guardian must have filed their 2019-2020 taxes. Also, other requirements must be met to qualify. It is worth mentioning that what is called "the expanded tax credit for minor children" is an anticipated sum of what could correspond to the taxpayer in the taxes that must be presented next year for the 2021 period. In other words, it is not a stimulus as they have called it, but an advance on account of the tax credit per child that qualifying taxpayers will have in 2022. As an accountant with extensive experience and a very broad portfolio of clients who qualify for this benefit, my professional opinion is that the Plan has serious flaws such as those detailed below: 1) This Plan, being an advance, will be ratified or rectified by the IRS when taxpayers file their 2021 tax returns. Taxpayers will most likely have less reimbursement than expected and that generally generates an attitude of dislike. 2) Many taxpayers do not agree with this "credit" and choose not to collect it because the amount is not important and does not solve economic problems, such as housing and work. Many clients of mine have already chosen this route. They prefer not to collect because their child tax credit for next year may be noticeably reduced. 3) The IRS is going to have to spend a lot of unnecessary money adjusting its website programs and other programs to the new legislation that is coming out in this regard. 4) The incentive does not include taxpayers who do not have children. 5) Many surveys carried out show that 70% of those surveyed do not agree that this benefit is considered a stimulus because it is an advance or advance on account of the child credit that taxpayers will receive in 2022. Therefore, I want to express my professional opinion based on my solid experience with many taxpayers who qualify for this benefit. The credit must be a real stimulus payment, not an anticipated sum on the 2022 tax credit.

As of midnight on Saturday night, the federal eviction moratorium expired. Millions of families are now at risk of eviction — during a global pandemic. Thousands of people have already been evicted from their homes. With a Democratic party controlled Congress + White House: this is UNACCEPTABLE. The Biden administration and Congress have been passing blame back and forth — with nobody taking responsibility for the eviction crisis. We’re tired of finger pointing. There’s no time to waste. It’s time for our federal, state, and local governments to implement bold solutions that are working + being led by organized renters impacted by the housing crisis. It’s time to invest in protecting renters to stay in our homes + in long-term community-controlled housing solutions. Will you add your name to our petition?

The medical community has concluded that SARS-CoV-2 transmission in the community is correlated with the amount of infections in schools. When community rates of COVID-19 are high, there is an increased likelihood that SARS-CoV-2 will be introduced to, and potentially transmitted within, a school setting. The current law enforcement-driven approach to public safety is not working, particularly not for Black communities. Any approach that centers punishment as a tool of public safety jeopardizes the health of whole communities and places the people in those communities at extreme risk. For years, activists have called on all of us to rethink the nation’s approach to public safety. Now, United States Representative Cori Bush is introducing the People’s Response Act that redefines public safety as a public health issue and funds community-based, community centered approaches to safety.  The safety of Black communities is dependent on our collective ability to create holistic, community-based centers of care and harm reduction. We cannot afford to protect the status quo: Tell your Representative to cosponsor the People’s Response Act.

Every resident at Avalon Green, with or without a dog, has expressed support for a proper dog run in the community. We chose to move here in part because our dogs would be able to enjoy the space too, but this is not the case. We have the opportunity to make our current community more enjoyable and safer for our dogs so let's try!

Homeless is due to shady practices from money hungry and powerful landlords. If we hold them accountable... the city wouldn’t have this catastrophic problem. Not all tenants have issues paying rent but landlords took their large down payments and started harassing them to immediately move out just to collect someone else large deposit.
