  • Senators Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein: Co-sponsor the Strengthening Social Security Act of 2013
Millions of Americans depend on Social Security. We need all Democratic Senators co-sponsoring this bill by Senator Tom Harkin because there is no valid reason to cut the meager benefits and this bill provides commonsense ways to expand and strengthen the program ensuring it for future generations.

  • Haverhill NH School Board: Time for Change, Remove John Rutherford
A board member may not be removed from office except as provided in RSA 32:12 and RSA 42:1-a. 42:1-a Manner Of Dismissal: I. The manner of dismissing a town officer who violates the oath as set forth in RSA 42:1 shall be by petition to the superior court for the county in which the town is located. 42:1 Oath Required: Every town officer shall make and subscribe the oath or declaration as prescribed by part 2, article 84 of the constitution of New Hampshire and any such person who violates said oath after taking the same shall be forthwith dismissed from the office involved. Article 84, part 2: I, A.B. do solemnly and sincerely swear and affirm that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all duties incumbent on me as ................................................., according to the best of my abilities, agreeably to the rules and regulations of this constitution and laws of the state of New Hampshire. So help me God. In Article 84 part 2 of the NH State Constitution, the Oath of Civil Officers, states that they will "faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all duties" of their office. On multiple occasions, Mr. John Rutherford has not performed his duties impartially, nor to the best of his abilities, in the best interest of the school or community. The largest of these being: 1. Voting to remove legal counsel without proper council set to replace them, thereby leaving the school and community legally vulnerable. 2. Not giving proper notice to the SAU Board Members of how legal counsel responded on the correct way to calculate a weighted vote when this was received well in advance of the vote. 3. When faced with proper interpretation of the weighted vote by the SAU Attorney, Mr. John Rutherford said the burden was on the other boards to bring legal suit against the Haverhill Board, rather than accepting fault. Thereby being willing to place the district in a legal battle with our other SAU Boards. 4. Continued meetings outside of the scheduled School Board Meetings with other School Board members, thereby disenfranchising other Board Members and community members from hearing discussions, which is clearly against Board rules and a breach of ethical conduct. I, the undersigned, believe this clearly shows a series of events where Mr. John Rutherford has NOT faithfully and impartially discharged and perform all duties which go in the best interest and wishes of the community he was voted to represent and should be removed from office forthwith. • Mini urban farms in city parks
The food desert in inner cities would be eliminated, recreaction for children and adults in urban areas could much enhanced by exposure to growing of fruits, vegetables and greens that are currently only seen as packaged food in grocery stores. The City Park and Recreation Department needs to change its focus from traditional lawn, play area maintainence, to stimulating the minds of young children, by exposing them to growing the food they eat. This would be a wonderful activity for those who would love to garden but have no access to land.

  • Closing the Medicaid Expansion Gap
As a physician in the state of Georgia, I have seen first hand the results of lack of health insurance. I have seen people with high blood pressure who develop heart failure and strokes because they cannot afford their blood pressure medications. I have seen people with diabetes who go on to develop kidney failure because of inadequate care. Many of these are the working poor - cooks, cashiers, cleaners, decent people who are working hard to make ends meet. They should not be left at the risk of unnecessary death, disability and financial ruin in the United States of America at this day and age despite the passage of the Affordable Care Act. The richest country in the world should not be the only developed country in which the poor do not have guaranteed access to healthcare, something that citizens of all other developed countries take for granted.

  • STRENGTHENING SOCIAL SECURITY ACT OF 2013
The Social Security Administration, having an independent funding source via payroll deductions, has no impact on our National Deficit or National Debt. However, in past debates over the budget, President Obama has proposed adjustments to Social Security Benefits, such as changing CPI to “chained-CPI” calculations. This would reduce Social Security Benefits for retired citizens, disabled individuals and veterans and deceased workers' survivors. Budget discussions must not include changes to Social Security benefits. A Public Policy Poll (PPP) in August indicated that significantly more that 50% of Americans are opposed to using the “Chained-CPI” method to calculate inflation adjustments. The Strengthen Social Security Act of 2013 addresses this issue and others to sustain Social Security and improve the economic and retirement security of millions of Americans (36% of Soc. Sec. recipients receive 90% of their income from Social Security benefits). The Strengthen Social Security Act of 2013 would: Strengthen Benefits by Reforming the Social Security Benefit Formula: The Act would change the method by which the Social Security Administration (SSA) calculates Social Security benefits. This change will boost benefits for all Social Security beneficiaries by approximately $70 per month, but is targeted to help those in the low and middle of the income distribution, for whom Social Security has become an ever greater share of their retirement income. Ensure that Cost of Living Adjustments Adequately Reflect the Living Expenses of Retirees: The Act changes the way the Social Security Administration calculated the Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA). To ensure that benefits better reflect cost increases facing seniors, future COLAs will be based on the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E). Making this change to Social Security is expected to result in higher COLAs, insuring that seniors are able to better keep up with the rising costs of essential items, like health care and prescription drugs. Improve the Long Term Financial Condition of the Trust Fund: Social Security is not in crisis, but does face a long term deficit. According to the most recent Social Security Trustees' report, the Trust Fund will be able to pay full benefits through 2033 (after which, benefits would only be reduced). To help extend the life of the trust fund, and decrease the 75 year actuarial deficit, the legislation would phase out the current taxable cap of $113,700 and instead ask the wealthiest Americans to contribute to the program the same share of their income as the middle class. A comprehensive graphic analysis of these issues was produced by Democracy for America, Social Security Works, MoveOn.org and GHERGICH & Co. Please view it at this link: http://act.democracyforamerica.com/sign/social_security_infographic/?akid=4145.922777.Fz4UDL&rd=1&source=em.socsecinfo.20131108&t=1 (copy & paste) Americans cannot afford to have their Social Security benefits cut. The Strengthen Social Security Act of 2013 needs to be enacted to protect our retired, disabled and surviving citizens. Please sign this petition to influence our senators to stand up for the strengthening of Social Security.
