• Remove Tepco Before You Remove That Fuel
The management of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear site demands a team of the world's best scientists and engineers, and sufficient financial resources to attempt to handle the situation. We are concerned that Tokyo Electric Power Company is not best suited for removing the hot fuel rods from Fukushima Unit Four or doing what needs to be done the site as a whole.

  • Munsey Park Planning Board - Say No to Subdivision of Section 3, Lot 116, Lot 4
From the Munsey Park Website: Munsey Park was developed on land purchased by newspaper publisher Frank A. Munsey in 1922 and willed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1925. From the beginning, homes were designed by architects to conform to a traditional 'American' style of home - custom built using the best materials and workmanship. To this day plans for alterations, additions or new construction are reviewed to insure proper design and individuality, while protecting each neighborhood from extreme designs not in architectural harmony with the rest of the community. Why it Matters: The current plan before the Board of Directors requests the subdivision of the approximate half acre corner lot on Bellows Lane and Manhasset Woods Road (currently unimproved land) into two approximate quarter acre parcels on which to build two spec houses. The block on which this parcel sits consists of lot sizes no less than approximately one-third of an acre (with corner lots typically larger). Subdivision of this lot will be a detriment to all residents as the construction of two houses on smaller lots will not be in architectural harmony with the surrounding homes. Two structures crammed onto this one lot will be an eyesore that can never be removed if approval is granted. Manhasset Woods Road is a thoroughfare which most Munsey Park residents travel to get to Northern Boulevard or Park Avenue. Please join us in opposing the subdivision to preserve look and feel of Munsey Park that we as a community have long fought to maintain. Thank you for your time, Concerned Munsey Parkers

  • Build a Flood-Free Philippines
Fatal floods have killed thousands of people and destroyed thousands of homes in the Philippines over the past 5 years. My family back home in the Philippines have been directly affected (Typhoon Ondoy), with my grandmother's home being destroyed, leaving her and the rest of my family with barely shelter and food from the aftermath of the flood. There is little to prepare when a disastrous flood occurs, than to seek indestructible shelter, which is what the Philippines lacks. Lend a hand and help create and build a flood-free Philippines.

  • SMCM Staff: Ms. Elsie
Ms. Elsie was a delight to have on campus. This was more than a job for her, she took pride in her work and cared for the students in a way that few housekeepers on campus do. She greeted students and asked about their day, actually caring to listen to the answer. She always made sure students had the supplies they needed. We ask that her status at the college be reconsidered for reasons stated above. Furthermore, because she was fired “with cause” we worry about the effect on her future in terms of employment opportunities and/or unemployment compensation. Because she was such a great worker, and person, we care as students of St. Mary's College of Maryland about her well being the same way she cared for ours.

  • Free Julio "Cheschi" Ramos
I am starting this petition because the laws of CT no longer hold marijuana possession as a crime. Yet, Ceschi was still sent away. The whole process of his arrest, to the coached confession, to the way his case was handled is infuriating. This man should not be in prison. That is why I have started this petition.

  • Save the Hoover Buses
Superintendent Andy Craig told the Hoover Board of Education that eliminating buses for students will save $2.5 million each year. He said eliminating buses would allow that $2.5 million to be redirected to the classroom to preserve educational quality. Eliminating buses won’t save $2.5 million a year. The FY13 (“fiscal year 2013″, the period from October 1, 2012, to September 30, 2013) budget was the first time that local funding for student transportation topped $2 million. Ever. No school official has given any good reason, backed up with numbers and a clear explanation, as to why so much local money is spent on transportation. Other nearby school districts have many more buses and manage to run them without the strain on local funds while maintaining high student achievement. No hard numbers have been produced showing actual cost savings from eliminating buses. No one has attempted to prove that savings will approach anywhere near $2.5 million. Buses have been running in Hoover, Alabama for almost 25 years. The loss of the buses will hurt children, adults and property values in our city. $1.9 million is spent on supplements for athletic coaches. $1.2 million is spent on education non-resident employees' children. • Richmond Public Schools plans to hire undertrained teachers!
We the undersigned oppose the plan proposed by Richmond (VA) Public Schools' Board to contract with Teach For America (TFA). Richmond Public Schools claims that TFA teachers will fill vacant posts in our schools. We oppose contracting for teachers in this way because: 1) It is not cost-effective: TFA costs the Richmond Public Schools $5000 per-teacher above the regular salary 2) TFA teachers only receive 5 weeks of training, and have little to no experience working with children of color prior to being accepted in the program. 3) TFA teachers only teach for 2 years, and the turnover makes improving schools even more difficult.

  • Historic Preservation Commission: Allow Pirate-like slogans on Rum Barrel Rubbish Bins
The original proposal for the Rum Barrel Rubbish and Recycling Bin project included the painting of anti-litter slogans in a pirate-like font and the old-style vernacular of men of the sea. A Committee member had mis-givings about the pirate-style slogans and suggested the slogans be more in the local crucian dialect. I agreed to submit some slogans in more of a local dialect for consideration and the committee agreed to research how other jurisdictions label bins in historic areas, make some suggestions, and ultimately choose 2 to 3 slogans for the barrels. I sent the committee copies of the original slogans, as well as some translated into the crucian dialect, and 5 additional slogans penned by a local crucian and a playwright. The committee's response was to reject all the slogans because they would not "maintain the dignity of the historic setting" and suggested the barrels be labeled with "TRASH BARREL" or "RUBBISH BARREL" or "RECYCLING BARREL". Which do not maintain the dignity of the historic setting any more than pirate slogans. The original slogans we suggested for garbage bins were: "Pitch in, not o'er th' side" "Don't Foul th' waters Matey" "Don't be a Tosser, Pitch in" "Stash yer Trash here" "Put Rubbish in er Place" "Don't trash your town" "Mash it, trash it, toss it in dis basket" "Gimme yer Rubbish, Mate" and for Recycle Bins: "Aluminum Loot only Mate!" Most recently we've asked them to consider 1 or 2 shortened slogans for rubbish: "Stash yer Trash" and "Pitch In" . And for recycling bins, "Aluminum Loot Only"

  • Limited Purpose Annexation
Members of our community have moved to this areas to be away from the city and all the surcharges. This includes using the land for agricultural business or just leaving in a quiet area without all the hassle of the city. Some of the land owners have passed their land from generation to generation without the need of the city. The county provides all the resources required for the land owners and the need of the city is not required. Please allow us to have a vote in the limited purpose annexation.

  • Tell the EPA to Stand Up to Big Oil on KXL
Ever since the Keystone XL pipeline was first proposed, the Environmental Protection Agency has been a strong voice inside the Obama administration, insisting that the State Department’s environmental review of Keystone XL consider the climate impacts of Canadian tar sands development. But there are now troubling signs that the EPA may be bowing to pressure to back off its critical comments on this biased review. Two days ago, EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy echoed a favorite talking point of pipeline proponents to The Boston Globe when she said that oil from the Alberta tar sands will find its way to market with or without Keystone XL. If we don’t act, this could be the first step in EPA moving towards accepting the pipeline. Please send a letter to EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy asking that the EPA stand strong on Keystone XL.
