• Fair use of Queen's Beach, Waikiki (4) Sand Volleyball Courts
The Queen's beach "Sandbox" is the only location on-island available to set up volleyball nets, and the current community of volleyball players have long used the space without conflict, inviting a constant flux of players at all levels. In the last year, no less than two organizations have secured exclusive use of the space to promote their "for a fee" volleyball programs. Additionally, college teams use the courts for practice and tournaments. The time available to individuals not affiliated with these organizations is now unreliable at best, and nearly non-existant. Furthermore, players have been told to take down their personal nets to allow for the organizations' use, because they have "permits" securing their exclusive use of the public space. The expected "first-come, first-served" implicit rule that normally governs public spaces is exploited by some individuals who now set up their equipment early in the day, (during work hours, for example) and leave the net up when not in use to prevent use of the courts, effectively "reserving" the courts. Additionally, the organized teams, youth clubs, and fitness groups use each of the four courts, when there are others wanting to play-- and the organizations might be accommodated on one, two, or even three courts-- leaving at least one for non-organization use. Your role, as a member of the sand volleyball playing community, with a vested interest in securing equal opportunities to play on these courts, is to take proactive action to voice your concerns. Please sign this petition and describe your observations, suggestions and perspectives--- urging our representatives to take action to provide more spaces to play sand volleyball, or create statute that will result in fair and equitable access to anyone wishing to play sand volleyball on Queen's Beach, Waikiki.

  • Save the already insufficient funds of our Social Security system.
Thousands of good American citizens are already attempting to survive below poverty level. Far too many are homeless and hungry. For a great majority, the only thing that gives hope is a monthly payment from the social security fund that they worked most of life to contribute to.

  • Department of Sanitation: Reduce street sweeping on our streets!
Studies have shown that when people have to move their cars for street sweeping in the city, they are more likely to drive them. Currently, the streets in our neighborhood, represented by Community Board 9, have a 97% cleanliness rating for the past two years, but DOS still sweeps each side 2 times per week. Given poor air quality in the metropolitan region, it would be smarter for us to reduce this number to 1 time each side per week.

  • Save Social Security
President Obama has proposed cutting Social Security by lowering cost-of-living adjustments for current and future retirees. These cuts, sometimes called "chained CPI," will hurt seniors who have paid into the system for their whole lives and are already struggling with rising health care costs.

  • Justice for Takota
We need a Federal Law that creates harsh penalties for First Degree Child Abuse. So many children are being abused every day. Like Takota his life was taken to soon. (He was abused and literally tortured until he didn't make it while in his Mother and her Boyfriend's care) Children should never have to suffer or go through such torture. We are taking a stand, if a child is being abused it should automatically be a felony no less than ten years in prison, and if a child's life is taken it should be life in prison without parole. You can learn more about Takota's story and this grass roots movements by visiting www.facebook.com/pages/Prayers-For-Takota/529487050423559?fref=ts

  • Please save Social Security Disability
Please Tammy, I collect Social Security disability. I receive $899.00 per month. By the end of the month I am always short. I have to decide where I can go based on how much gas I can afford for my car. My co-pays for my doctors deplete much of it, and my out of pocket deductable is $500.00 per year. It will take me 10 months just to pay off the deductable. Please help keep my current payment as it is, not less.
