• CalArts Divests to Impress
Dear President Lavine, Vice President Matthewson, The CalArts Board of Trustees, and The CalArts Board of Overseers, Climate change is accelerating. We are witnessing the increasing impacts of a warming planet more and more consistently; in this last year alone our country experienced record-breaking heat, droughts, and hurricanes, which impacted hundreds of thousands of people and cost our country hundreds of billions of dollars. Hurricane Sandy alone caused $50bn in damages. Experts agree that global warming caused by humans burning fossil fuels will continue to accelerate and intensify these tragic climate disasters. The scientific consensus is clear and overwhelming; we cannot safely burn even half of global fossil-fuel reserves without dangerously warming the planet for several thousand years. As public pressure to confront climate change builds, we call on The California Institute of the Arts to immediately freeze any new investment in fossil-fuel companies, and to divest within five years from direct ownership and from any commingled funds that include fossil-fuel public equities and corporate bonds. We believe such action on behalf of CalArts will not only be a sound decision for our institution’s financial portfolio, but also for the wellbeing of its current and future graduating classes, who deserve the opportunity to graduate with a future not defined by climate chaos. For the good of our students and our nation, and to preserve the quality of life for this and future generations worldwide, we call upon you to join a growing movement of schools around the country that are committed to preventing a more extreme climate by moving The California Institute of the Arts endowment beyond fossil fuels.

  • Decriminalize /Legalize Marijuana in Maryland
WE all know that 2 new states this election year have legalized marijuana and in Oregon a person can get plants for medical reasons. It will be then, a more controlled substance and we each know someone who has used. Lets' tax it to help our finances state wide. If gambling/alcohol can be legal, why should people be put in prison for this ?

  • Allow Principle Reduction for Fannie/Freddie GSE Loans
The Attorney General, Jack Conway, KY has a commercial PSA for homeowners who were defrauded by Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citi Bank, JP Morgan Chase or Ally may file a claim for principle reductiion or compensation under the landmark Federal & State Attorneys General settlement with the banks. Unfortunately, for me and many other borrowers from Countrywide/Bank of America, and other banks charged with misconduct, my loan is guaranteed by Freddie Mac (GSE), therefore, I do not qualify for relief. This is not fair and should be expanded to all of us who are affected by the actions of these banks.

  • Stop Foreign Aid to Uganda
For the Nations government, that is supposed to under their Constitution protect their citizens, to pass a piece of legislation that criminalizes homosexuality and makes it punishable by life imprisonment and or death is outrageous. In the 2011 fiscal year 527 million dollars went to Uganda and I feel that money should be spent here at home or be sent to countries more deserving.

  • Eliminate or Limit the Federal Tax Exempt Status of Religious Groups and the Charitable Deduction...
The granting of federal tax exempt status of religious groups and the federal charitable tax deduction for contributions to religious groups based solely on their status as religious groups represents inappropriate federal government support for the maintenance of religious influence. Religious groups receive tax-exempt status, and donors to such groups thereby receive the benefit of a federal tax deduction for their contributions to such groups, simply because those groups believe in and worship a particular deity. There is nothing inherently charitable in believing in and worshiping a particular deity. Therefore, religious groups, and contributions to such groups, should not receive favorable tax treatment merely on the basis of their religious status. Although religious groups often conduct valuable social work, their favorable tax treatment is necessarily tied to religion, which has no inherent charitable nexus, and represents federal funding of religion. Just as non-religious groups that conduct valuable social work, which may receive favorable tax treatment as charitable organizations, should not be favored over religious groups that conduct such charitable work, religious groups that conduct such work should not be favored over non-religious ones merely because of the religious groups' belief in and worship of a particular deity. The favorable tax treatment should be related to the actual social work that is conducted, not simply to the status of being a religious organization (which organization may or may not utilize their resources for valuable social work).

  • nominate Malala Yousufzai, a Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban for advocating girls'...
Malala Yousufzai, a Pakistani girl was shot by Taliban for advocating girls' education. Many other countries have joined in support of her by petitioning that she receive the Nobel Peace Prize. It is my hope that women in the United States will now join women from other countries in that effort. What better way to show support for our own daughters then by encouraging the nomination of Malala Yousufzai.

  • Repeal of the Electoral College
We the undersigned citizens of the United States of America, petition our Congress to repeal the Articles of our United States Constitution, that authorize the Electoral College. We are convinced that we are entitled to and capable of electing our President and Vice-President, with our popular vote. Had we citizens elected our President by the popular vote in 2000, Al Gore/John Edwards would have been our President and Vice-President; and the Iraq War, never would have taken place.
