• It's time to #PassPaidLeave for all!
The United States is one of only six remaining countries in the world with no guaranteed form of paid leave. Just 25 percent of workers in the entire country have access to paid family leave through their jobs. And here in America, one in four people who have given birth returned to work within two weeks—bleeding, sleep-deprived, and often still injured. There is a human cost to the lack of paid leave, and families are paying for it. Women and caregivers lift up our economy, which also disproportionately relies on the undervalued labor of women of color. Passing paid leave and care policies would yield millions of jobs, billions in wages, and trillions in GDP. It would reduce turnover costs, retain talented workers, and allow employers and small businesses to be more competitive. It would keep working people in their jobs and families afloat.

  • Disbar Sidney Powell, lawyer who pleaded guilty in Trump's 2020 criminal conspiracy
In February, a judge said the Texas commission had not proved Powell violated the Texas attorney code of conduct. But now, as a defendant in the Georgia Trump case being prosecuted by Fani T. Willis, the Fulton County district attorney, Sidney Powell pled guilty, agreed to reach a cooperation deal, and agreed to turn state’s evidence. She faced seven felony charges tied to the conspiracy to overthrow the election; her plea deal admitted guilt to misdemeanor charges. The State Bar of Texas has already investigated Powell for allegedly false and misleading statements to federal courts regarding wild conspiracy theories about Joe Biden’s election. The state bar’s disciplinary arm has indeed sued Powell. Moreover, on August 25, Michigan U.S. District Court Judge Linda Parker sanctioned Powell for “a historic and profound abuse of the judicial process” in bringing an election fraud case with no basis in law, solely based on “speculation, conjecture, and unwarranted suspicion.” Judge Parker noted that Powell’s conduct warranted a “referral for investigation and possible suspension or disbarment.” In addition, Powell has apparently named other people as plaintiffs or co-counsel without their consent and falsely represented that other attorneys were her co-counsel, though their roles were nominal or nonexistent. If true, this violates the American Bar Association's model rules for professional conduct. We ask you to review all the new evidence against Sidney Powell. It appears clear that she is a disgrace to the legal profession and possesses little or no respect for the law. We urge you to consider this evidence, and, if you find it credible, to disbar Sidney Powell.

  • Protect workers from AI abuses!
Big Tech corporations hype up advances in AI as ways they might improve their products or services, but the ugly truth is that they are using AI to pad their profit margins and exploit workers. Given how fast the field of AI is developing, we need to speak out NOW to protect workers’ rights.

  • Get The Grammy Awards to acknowledge Buck-Tick
This is important to me because Buck-Tick's music has touched many fans worldwide, even if they don't want to admit it, they are heroes behind their musical instruments. They may have inspired and prevented fans from taking their own lives, put it bluntly. The band has definitely deserved more Awards than what they have been presented with over the years. Their live performances are extremely dynamic, I have only seen recorded versions of their live shows, but wow!!!

  • Help Us Get Period Products On The Ferries
Hello, we are middle school girls who are doing a project for 7th grade. We have noticed that there are no menstrual products or sanitary bins in the ferry bathrooms. You can't even buy them in the galley. We thought that this would be a perfect topic to stand up for what we think is right and fair. These products are only available if you ask a crew member. You already have to pay for the period products, and now you have to go up to a stranger and ask them for something that you might not feel comfortable asking for. This can lead to embarrassment, and can also cause people who have periods to not feel supported by their community. This makes us question our equality. The ferry provides all the basic bathroom necessities for people who don't menstruate. But they omit some of the basic bathroom necessities for people who do menstruate. When we reached out to the ferry customer service they said that they removed the period product dispensers due to vandalism. When basic things like toilet paper, soap dispensers, and paper towel machines get vandalized, the ferry management accepts the cost of vandalism, puts them back out, and restocks them. On the other hand, when period products get vandalized, the ferry management uses vandalism as an acceptable reason to take them down and get rid of them. The lack of period products in the bathrooms is a lack of respect and privacy. This is an unequal level of service based on gender. If you want to support getting period products and sanitary bins in the ferry bathrooms, please sign our petition. Thank you for reading. :)

  • Update the outdated BMI policy for Top Surgery
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Center for Transgender and Gender Expansive Health released a study in the journal Annals of Plastic Surgery on November 1. They reviewed over 2,300 cases of chest masculinization surgery (top surgery) performed in the U.S. between 2012 and 2020. The researchers found no correlation between a patient’s BMI and whether the person develops severe post-surgical complications, even though that measurement is frequently used to determine whether a surgery will be approved or denied. The authors of the study recommend “re-evaluation of BMI cutoffs” and say “When you look at the data and you look at complications resulting from top surgery, BMI really doesn’t factor into it much at all,” Despite this Both major providers of chest masculinization surgery in Denver, CO Denver Health and UCHealth will often not even take referrals for people with a BMI over 40. My primary care doctor told me that there was no point in her ever referring me because they will just deny the referral. These two hospitals are the only places in the entire state of Colorado that I could find who take Medicaid for chest masculinization surgery as well which leads to more denials for poor and disabled trans people. Please consider signing and sharing this petition so that more trans people of Denver have access to the gender affirming care they need!

  • No one is above the law
No one is above the law. The recent ruling by a Colorado judge that found that former President Donald Trump incited insurrection, but can remain on the ballot, must be challenged by everyone who calls America home. It might seem like commonsense that when a person commits an insurrection or treasonous acts on our community, state, or nation, that said person should be disqualified from running for any local, state, or federal public office. However we are a nation ruled by laws- not commonsense, and we must advocate for appealing the recent ruling in higher courts and champion laws that protect our communities. Judge Sarah B. Wallace, 2nd Judicial District Court judge, found that Trump incited an insurrection and could not use the “freedom of speech” argument to justify his actions, and that Secretaries of State could in fact could remove him from the ballot. However the judge used a legal technicality to allow Trump to remain on the ballot. The judge ruled “that the drafters of the Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment did not intend to include the President as “an officer of the United States.” The question if the judge was correct in using this technicality has two parts: 1. Is the president an officer? This question is a legal issue, and it will be argued on appeals, potentially up to the Supreme Court. I would submit that as commander in chief, the leader of our armed forces, the president is the highest officer in our nation. 2. Should a president be disqualified from running for any and all public office if they incited an insurrection? Absolutely! No person is above the law. Any person (especially a President) that commits an insurrection or treasonous acts on our community, state, or nation, should be disqualified from running for any local, state, or federal public office. This question is an advocacy issue and therefore we must champion laws that protect our communities. Can you sign on to this petition to the Senate and House leadership to champion laws that protect our community from any person (and that includes Presidents) that commits an insurrection or treasonous acts on our community, state, or nation?

  • Urgent Call for Reform: Strengthening the University of Maryland's Response to Sexual Harassment
I believe that by proactively addressing these aspects, the University of Maryland can take a significant step towards creating a campus where all students feel secure and supported. I kindly request your attention to this matter and your commitment to implementing these reforms as part of the ongoing efforts to prioritize the well-being of our university community. The Diamondback covered a story in December 2022 relating to the record-high rate of sexual misconduct reports during the 2021-2022 period. The sexual misconduct reports come from students, staff, or faculty members on UMD’s campus, which are then reviewed by a Title XI coordinator at OCRSM. The coordinator then reaches out to the complainant who can then decide if they want to file a complaint for the University to address their report of sexual misconduct. Hundreds of reports were filed within the 2021-2022 reporting period, with only 25 becoming formal complaints. Complainants did not want to move forward in 94 of the cases and did not respond to the outreach in 107 of the cases. In 41 cases the university determined it did not have authority over the respondent. While sexual harassment was the most frequently reported type of sexual misconduct within this reporting period, there were zero investigations into the assaults in that same period (UMD Sees Record High in Sexual Misconduct Reports During 2021-2022, 2022). Seeing this rise in sexual harassment on campus facilitates the necessity of reforming the current policies related to on-campus and workplace sexual harassment.

  • Netflix: Stop the corporate greed, stop raising prices, NOW!
Netflix’s newest price increase follows its unpopular and restrictive policy change regarding password sharing, requiring customers to pay an extra $7.99 to share their password with someone outside of their household. Netflix needs to know that consumers have the power—and we're not going to allow them get rich while they slash services and raise costs. The reality is, when one streaming giant like Netflix raises its prices, the others often follow. Disney+, Hulu, Apple TV+, Discovery+, and AMC+ are also raising prices on some of their monthly subscriptions. It’s unacceptable. Over the years, many people have ended their traditional cable TV contracts and migrated to streaming services, but the price hikes on these services are quickly becoming unsustainable. Netflix must stop the price hikes, NOW. Netflix is implementing a price hike despite anticipating 5 BILLION dollars in free cash flow, partly due to writers and actors going on strike because Netflix and other streaming giants were refusing to offer them a fair contract. So essentially, writers and actors with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) went months without work or pay while Netflix got richer. It’s corporate greed on the backs of writers, actors, production staff, and Netflix subscribers, plain and simple. It must end. The massive wealth inequality that we see between the ultrawealthy and everyday working people is reflected in the entertainment industry too. Streaming companies like Netflix make BILLIONS of dollars in corporate profits each year and pay top executives hundreds of MILLIONS of dollars combined, while exploiting writers, actors, production staff, and streaming subscribers. This is one of the many reasons why we have to come together to stop these price hikes. Add your name to the petition, and then send it to three friends to spread the word!

  • Social Workers Against Genocide
As social workers, we value social justice and our ethical principles call us to challenge social injustice. Since October 7th, with the backing of the United States, ongoing war crimes are being committed in Gaza and surrounding areas. Civilians have been cut off from electricity and water by Israel. Israel has blocked deliveries of food, water, and fuel. Hospitals in Gaza are being targeted with bombs and snipers. Schools, places of worship, refugee camps, and escape routes are also being targeted. There are ongoing indiscriminate rocket attacks, deliberate targeting of civilians, and a complete disregard for human life. According to the Health Ministry in Gaza more than 2/3rd of Gaza's population of 2.3 million have fled their home since the war began. As of November 14th, more than 11,000 Palestinians, 2/3rd of them women and children, have been killed. Every day matters. We can not remain silent and complicit to the genocide of the Palestinian people.
