• Pass SB 2123 as it was FIRST Introduced
For the citizens of Mississippi. This is to get loved ones out of horrible prisons and back into society. When these men and women get out, they will get jobs and start paying taxes. We can get our prison systems in order and up to code. We can get our loved ones back in our lives every day and not just four hours one day a week. We can get guards that care and are not overworked or just needing a job. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone deserves a second chance.

  • Stop the Spread - Shut the Schools
For many COVID-19 is a life threatening illness. Given the current situation with coronavirus I think FCPS should do the right thing and close the schools for a few weeks. It is clear from the numbers in the rest of the world that if we shut things down now we have a much better chance of containing the virus. I know that we have several snow days already built in to the school year. We can use them now and help stop the spread of the virus. I could keep my own children home but it’s not going to help unless everyone keeps their children home. Below are links to a few articles I’ve found defending this idea: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/03/coronavirus-cancel-everything/607675/ And https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-act-today-or-people-will-die-f4d3d9cd99ca If we take things seriously and “quarantine” now we can prevent this virus from overwhelming our medical system like it seems to have done in Northern Italy. But we need our leadership to guide us. I promise I will defend you when other parents complain that closing the schools is an over reaction. Believe me when I say I don’t look forward to spending weeks at home with my children (even though I love them very much!)

  • Investigate the Trump Administration's Coronavirus Corruption and Mismanagement
The coronavirus outbreak is already putting a strain on health systems, disrupting public life, and impacting people across the country. As holder of the highest office in the land, Donald Trump should be doing whatever he can to ensure public health. But he's done just the opposite: Instead of looking out for our safety, Trump has consistently prioritized protecting corporate profits over fighting the outbreak. The number of missteps and the level of corruption in the administration's coronavirus response are staggering. From hiring a drug company executive and medicine price gouger as Secretary of Health and Human Services, to resisting making treatments affordable, Trump is looking out for the bottom line of corporations, not public health. Enough is enough. Congress must step in and investigate how Donald Trump’s loyalty to corporate CEOs over working families is putting lives at risk. Here's just some of what we've learned over the past couple of weeks: First, The Washington Post reported that Trump's main concern has been the falling stock market. He's even urged his aides not to make any comments that might negatively impact stocks--potentially causing top officials to withhold critical information from the public. Then, Trump's appointed secretary of health and human services, Alex Azar—a former pharma executive—refused to commit to compelling pharmaceutical companies to ensure that any future vaccine would be affordable. Azar has a history of price gouging: While he was president of Eli Lily, the cost of the company's life saving insulin drug tripled. Now, reports show that the coronavirus funding package was actually a giant giveaway to drug companies, which failed to guarantee fair pricing for new treatments. Just as he’s done time and time again, Trump is showing whose side he’s really on—that of corporations and the wealthy—and once again, it’s having a potentially devastating impact on people and families across the country. And what we know publicly so far could just be the tip of the iceberg. Given Trump's record, it's likely that there's even more corruption and mismanagement waiting to be uncovered. Congress has the opportunity to publicly expose all of this, but it may not happen if we don’t urge them to take action. Sign the petition and demand that Congress investigate Trump’s botched coronavirus response.

  • Better Measures for the Coronavirus Emergency to protect People
By allowing workers to stay home without fear of being unable to make rent and allowing people to buy health insurance, EVERYONE will be better off as it will help slow the spread of the virus. Also, if more people get health insurance, the insurance pool will be bigger, and presumably younger people who opted not to get insurance will be motivated to get covered.

  • Taking Action Against Food Waste
According to northwestharvest.org, 1 in 10 people struggle with hunger, and 1 in 8 people (half of which are children) rely on food stamps. Meanwhile, Washingtonians are throwing out eight percent of edible food (data taken by your site, The Washington Department of Ecology). Food that could ultimately help these people eat every night. By requiring grocery stores to donate food they would throw away, we would reduce food waste and feed those who are struggling to feed themselves.

  • Public Health Info Should Be Free: Remove Paywalls from Coronavirus Articles
Preventing transmission of the novel coronavirus is an urgent public health issue. Access to information on this rapidly evolving situation is essential to individual and community safety. Keeping vital information behind a paywall prevents nonsubscribers from accessing important information, and it disproportionately affects people with fewer financial resources. The Seattle Times recently announced that it would allow unlimited public access to stories about the virus. Other major newspapers should follow their lead for the safety of the public. [1] To give a sense of the scope of information being held back, Harvard epidemiologist Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding analyzed reporting about coronavirus from major papers between January 1, 2020, and February 20, 2020, and found thousands of coronavirus-related articles behind paywalls at seven large papers [2]: The New York Times: 1,012 The Washington Post: 981 The Wall Street Journal: 749 Los Angeles Times: 490 The Miami Herald: 463 The Boston Globe: 340 Chicago Tribune: 292 The novel coronavirus has the potential to touch the lives of billions of people. The public must be empowered with reliable and up-to-date information in order to take practical safety measures and prevent transmission of the virus. Sharing accurate information also guards against the spread of unnecessary panic. Access to these resources is also an issue of equity -- lower income populations that are not able to afford newspaper subscriptions are excluded when paywalls lock them out. With the decline of local newspapers, information increasingly flows from national outlets. [3] Public health and awareness are at stake -- all people have a right to protect themselves, their families, and their livelihood and deserve access to high-quality reporting and insight from scientific experts.

  • Band together
When I look at the Democratic field I see a lot of talent and good ideas. But this positive message is lost in the bickering that makes them all so unattractive. Democrats have a mission to serve the needs of all classes, all races in this country including former Trump voters. People are tired of fighting. Give them hope and unity and a positive cohesive message.

  • Don't use the coronavirus as an excuse to reauthorize the Patriot Act!
The spread of the coronavirus is a major national and global public health crisis. It should be a moment where our government works quickly and effectively to stop a pandemic. Instead, as the Intercept reported, Congressional leaders are considering adding an extremely controversial provision reauthorizing mass spying on the American people to a must-pass coronavirus spending bill. Key portions of the Patriot Act are due to expire on March 15. This includes Section 215, the notorious provision that enabled our government to conduct mass surveillance on the American people. Members of both parties in Congress have tried to prevent Section 215 from being reauthorized, so we can shut down this abusive spying for good. But Congressional leaders are strongly considering adding a reauthorization of Section 215 to the coronavirus spending bill, forcing members of Congress to choose between public health and our constitutional rights. We need to mobilize NOW and tell Congress this is an unacceptable, shady, and offensive idea. Congress needs to pass a clean coronavirus funding bill. And they need to shut down Section 215 for good.
