These high student loan debts are making it hard for so many and trying to juggle between paying rent, everyday bills and feeding a household is a huge crisis for many families. Every day 64-year-old pipelines push nearly 23 million gallons of oil through the heart of the Great Lakes. What if they ruptured? These aging pipelines, called Line 5, are owned by Canadian company Enbridge and lie exposed in the water at the bottom of the Straits of Mackinac, where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet. A spill here would be catastrophic. Another Enbridge pipeline ruptured in Michigan in 2010 and spilled 1 million gallons of heavy crude oil into the Kalamazoo River. It was the largest land-based oil spill in U.S. history, and is took years to clean up. Enbridge's Line 5 pipeline through the Great Lakes is 15 years older than that one was when it ruptured. PIPELINES FAIL. THESE AGING PIPELINES IN THE STRAITS ARE NOT WORTH THE RISK. WE NEED YOU TO HELP PREVENT A DISASTER. Michigan should not put the Great Lakes, our economy, health, drinking water, fisheries, and way of life at risk from a catastrophic oil spill any longer. Our state currently faces a $1B shortfall in our transportation budget. The current mood seems to favor toll roads, but we would argue that legalizing marijuana, and taxing it appropriately, would provide far more income to the state among the numerous other benefits that legalization would bring. One only needs to look to legal states that are benefiting from the novelty tourism, the reduction in opiate use and related deaths, the reduction in drug related crimes and the massive influx of money and jobs associated with this new industry. If we do it now, we can ride the wave of novelty and beat states like Illinois and Minnesota to the punch. If we are too late, we will lose out on BILLIONS of dollars, if not more.

I am starting this petition because naively, I believed that old growth was sacred and that the forest service would never build roads or log in such a precious place. At a recent field trip looking at a huge logging project in Western Montana, I asked the economist if they would build roads through old growth. He said yes without batting an eye. I also discovered that they are running roads in old growth and a known Goshawk nesting sight in another project. I thought the Forest Service was a steward of the forest. I thought they wanted to care for it and protect it. But instead, the Montana forests are forced to produce board feet based on logging mandates made by politicians and timber lobbyists. So they must get it in any and every way possible which includes destroying old growth.

Despite Costco's commitment to end the use of cruel gestation crates by 2017, a recent open rescue investigation into a Costco supplier revealed most mother pigs trapped in tiny gestation crates, unable to assist as their babies were slowly dying. Furthermore, activists found dying baby pigs piled up inside crowded farrowing crates, covered in blood and excrement, and up to 1/3 of them will die before even reaching slaughter. Shockingly, piglets whose mothers are mutilated by years of abuse are sometimes forced to drink their mother's blood in order to survive.

I waited two years for affordable senior housing in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the most expensive rental markets in the country, where most housing wait lists have been closed for years. We love our well-maintained homes and safe community. But the President's proposed deep cuts to HUD and USDA housing programs would mean rent and utility increases immediately, less money for property maintenance, and even longer waits for future affordable housing. We need more affordable housing, not less. Tell Congress to stop these proposed cuts and fully fund affordable housing programs now.
