The Voting Rights Act is one of the most important pieces of civil rights legislation Congress has ever passed. Last year's Supreme Court decision weakened critical provisions of it. Right now, Congress can restore those protections by passing this important bill. Rep. Rice should support this effort by cosponsoring and fighting for a strong bill.

The proposed changed to strengthen Section 5 extends to all states and jurisdictions. Based on the nationwide assault on voters, this is no longer a "Southern" issue. A nationwide formula is long overdue and a good start to re-affirming the most basic right of every citizen.

To ask Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen to make sure that the people in her district have their voices heard by being able to vote for the person of their choice. That they will be represented fairly in their district no matter whom they cast their vote for. That they should be able to trust that their vote will be counted. Rep. When I was 8, I wrote a letter to President Bush about why kids should be allowed to vote. I got no response, but when my sister sent in fan mail, she got an autographed picture. At 19, perhaps I still hold a grudge against authoritarian rulers making decisions for a collective population.
