The Committee on Criminal Justice Advocacy for People with Mental Illness and CURE IL along with the undersigned individuals and organizations have joined as one voice to express our concerns regarding all forms of civil rights violations perpetrated by the staff of Cook County Jail against its inmate population. While the violation of any individual’s civil rights is unacceptable to us, we place particular emphasis on issues relating to inmates with mental illness.

Parents everywhere are suffering financially. Not every family qualifies for free lunches, yet even reduced lunches can get costly. Some parents are having to choose between paying their bills, putting gas in the car, or immediately paying off their children's student lunch accounts. Schools then suspend children with a negative balance on their lunch accounts from attending fun activities & games. In effect punishing them for their family's financial status. Congress needs to act & stop this type of discrimination now! Students should not be prevented from enjoying activities because their parents can't afford to feed them. Congress should draft legislation preventing schools from suspending children with negative lunch balances from attending fun games, rallies, etc.. End financial discrimination in schools now!

Repeal the Controlled Substances Act and legalize all drugs for mentally competent adults (21+). The Drug War has failed, 30,000 people have lost their lives in Mexico, and for what? Marijuana is not going away. It's about time we decriminalized it.

The picture ID's now required by some states is social, racial and economically discriminating. If a State passes a Photo ID Voters Law they must IMMEDIATELY notify their citizens of this and provide an easy, effective, FREE way to obtains such a credential before this November election.

Because the current law does not allow a legal agreement defining marriage as available option to same sex couples these brothers and sisters, friends and family, are denied, the same economic benefits that are offered to heterosexuals, the current "reigning group" majority. The old mantra of exposure to children, illness, lewdness (sooo old fashioned and out-dated) and against mainstream religion has been taken apart, dissected by every group from social psychiatry to following the pack mentality to ignorance. In this century, in our lifetime, how absurd to deny any sect of people a denial or refusal to love and cohabit and form a family.

Tami Fitzgerald is chairwoman of the campaign to put Amendment One into the constitution, which would prohibit North Carolina from viewing same-sex relationships as marriages or civil unions. Her opposition to acknowledging same-sex couples is grounded in the Bible. However, the Bible is much clearer about banning women from teaching or holding authority over men than it is about same-sex relationships. To be consistent in her interpretation of the Bible, we demand that Ms. Fitzgerald immediately resigns and discontinues all leadership and teaching roles.
