• NO Kill at Will
Trayvon Martin, the Florida teenager who was killed while walking home in his hoodie, is dead because someone who felt threatened by him took his life. George Zimmerman, Trayvon's killer, still hasn't even been arrested for the shooting. Why? Because Florida is a Kill at Will state. Astonishingly, Florida law broadensthe definition of justifiable homicide by granting people the right to use deadly force if they feel threatened. Thisextreme expansion of the right to kill, despite being fought by law enforcement officials, has occurred in 24 states. Right now, the legislature in Nebraska is considering following Florida's lead and becoming a Kill at Will state. If enough of their constituents speak out against Kill at Will, it can be stopped. Because of the negative attention theTrayvon Martin tragedy is bringing to these laws, elected officials and the media debating the legislation won't be able to ignore loud public pressure to keep Nebraska from becoming a Kill at Will state. These Kill at Will laws make us and our children all less safe. And they are a special danger to young people of color like Trayvon Martin, who may fall under "suspicion" from armed vigilantes simply by being young, black, and wearing a hoodie. Stand up for the next Trayvon by signing this petition, telling our Nebraska Government that we will not stand for a tragedy like that in our state.

  • Remove S.2109 from consideration
Senators Jon Kyl and John McCain are trying to make the Navajo and Hopi Nations forfeit their water rights. They seek to take the water that the Navajo and Hopi people need to drink, farm, raise livestock, and maintain some economic independence, and give it to large energy corporations. We need to let the Senate know that this is deeply wrong, and that they do not have the people's support in this.

  • CISPA Replaces PIPA and SOPA
H.R. 3523, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) allows businesses to decide to give away all your personal online information to the government or anybody without a subpoena or even probable cause under the guise of "national security." Basically, an online 'Patriot Act.' This article explains: http://www.examiner.com/progressive-in-portland/cispa-congressional-plan-to-censor-internet-concerns-critics

  • Strips Searches for Everyone...?
Recently, our nation's Supreme Court ruled to allow strip searches without reasonable suspicion. A man, on his way to a family gathering, was wrongfully arrested, held in jail for 6 days and strip searched twice. After reviewing the case, the Supreme Court ruled AGAINST Albert Florence, thus reinforcing law enforcement's actions.

  • Albany: Stop making our deceased hostages of the commercial funeral industry
Taking control of one of the most important rites of passage in any family is a fundamental right that must be preserved. But, New York state gives the commercial funeral industry a legal monopoly on citizen deaths. Families who want to care for their dead privately as our great grandparents did are forced to hire a funeral home whether they want to or not, and whether they can afford to or not.

  • I Pledge to Vote Against Amendment One
North Carolina Amendment One is up for a vote on May 8. If passed, the constitutional amendment will harm women, children and families. It will also harm our ability to recruit businesses. Polling shows that North Carolina opposes Amendment One when they understand what it actually does and we must educate all of North Carolina on the harms of Amendment One. 1. Amendment One would eliminate the possibility of legal recognition of gay and lesbian couples. This would, in turn, threaten end of life decisions, hospital visitations, adoptions, child custody and more. 2. This amendment, if passed, would eliminate health coverage and benefits currently offered by city and county governments across North Carolina. This would strip coverage from children and unmarried couples - gay and straight. 3. Current polling indicates that North Carolinians oppose virtually everything that would happen if Amendment One passes, they just do not understand the impacts yet. That is why we must have conversations with our fellow North Carolinians about the harms of Amendment One.

  • LAW PLACED: For Sanitary Products to be Placed in all Public Restrooms
LAW PLACED: For Sanitary Products to be Placed in all Public Restrooms. There is not always regularity, for the population of people that endure a monthly period. Sometimes, especially depending on stress levels, "it", can come at any time. Our world is not accommodating for those who experience this. This leads to further oppression, as where a random period can cause missed time from any pleasurable activity. Not only so, but also time missed from work or school, because of this, can be discouraging and sometimes have negative repercussions. Those who do not experience this function, have the capability of walking through life without these continual surprises. This normal, bodily function, should not be ignored! There needs to be support in our communities for those who may experience a period. There needs to be support for those, that experience a cycle. Please sign this petition, if you have ever missed time because of a sudden on-set. Please sign this petition, if you know anyone who has ever missed time from something important because of a sudden on-set. Please sign this petition, to support anyone who may experience this, ANYTIME or ANYWHERE. I am 26, from the University of Southern Maine, working to fight the oppression of women... one petition at a time. PLEASE HELP, JUST SIGN!
