The Kentucky Board of Education is about to vote on Next Generation Science Standards, an updated and comprehensive set of standards which include the science of climate change. Sadly, climate change deniers – including State Senate Education Chairman Mike Wilson — are already lining up against this new research-based science curriculum (1). Senator Wilson wants to prevent climate science from reaching our classrooms at a time when climate impacts, from heat waves to drought to severe storms, are already harming Kentucky communities. I refuse to stand by while my grandchildren are prevented from receiving the kind of high-quality science education they need to prepare for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Climate change will have a huge impact on our children’s future, and we need to let the Board know that Kentucky parents, grandparents and science supporters want our kids to learn the facts. Action now is critical, because the Board plans to consider adoption of the new science standards-including climate change education-at their meeting in Frankfort next Wednesday, June 5th. We have lived with danger and blight on the corner of 16th and Mission for too long. Our neighborhood deserves better access to safe, clean and walkable transportation corridors.

The San Francisco Bay Area emits 100 million tons of greenhouse gases (GHGs) per year. Scientists tell us that to avoid catastrophic warming and climate change we must cut GHG emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. California aims to reduce GHGs to 1990 levels by 2020. It's a start, but not nearly enough. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) has the power to regulate over 50% of all the GHG emissions in the Bay Area, but they're not doing it yet. They need to lead the way to bring those emissions down to safe levels. If the progressive, environmentally aware Bay Area can't lead the way, who can? President Obama quietly approved the Monsanto Protection Act which was deceiving when titled the Farmers Protection Act which affects Every American Citizen Organic Farmers and Farmers that Plant Non-GMO seeds and Many Countries Worldwide. It directly affects myself, every American Citizen and People Around The World. Environment, Soil, Farmers, Water and Humans are at a High Risk from the GMO seeds and Pesticides and Herbicides Monsanto uses which based on Monsanto's Claim that it will promote High Yields and Less Pesticides. That is Not True, since Monsanto's GMO Round Up Ready seeds, they have not produced Higher Yields and have continually needed to use More Pesticides And Stronger More Dangerous Pesticides because these toxic seeds have proven to Not Benefit Higher Yields and have proven that these Toxic Seeds No Longer respond to Round Up pesticides but now need More Deadly and More Toxic Pesticides then previous applied. These Toxic Pesticides and Herbicides are even more Dangerous to Humans and Our Environment providing Less Yields at an alarming toll on Our Soils, Contaminating and Rendering Useless Our Precious Land Cannot Tolerate. The Waukegan coal plant is the largest emitter of sulfur dioxide, mercury and carbon dioxide pollution in all of Lake County, contributing to 34 premature deaths and 570 asthma attacks every year. Midwest Generation sells the power it produces on the open market out of state and Lake County residents are left with the pollution and health costs. It's time to move Waukegan beyond coal and create new opportunities for cleaner, healthier businesses in the community.

Hydrofracking creates millions of gallons of wastewater, or "produced" water. It has been dumped into retention basins, concrete structures, etc. Pennsylvania is running out of room to get rid of the water, they want to process it in NJ wastewater treatment plants (sewage plants). The produced water has chemicals that are not disclosed, so how can a plant process them, and treat them, and then put into our waterways which is done with other treated sewage? Our plants have lists of chemicals that they can and cannot treat. The NJ Legislature voted almost unanimously to prohibit frack wastewater from NJ; the Gov vetoed it; and now various groups in NJ are working to over-ride the veto.
