• STOP MONSANTO AT FEDERAL LEVEL
When I walk up and down my market's aisles (including my health food stores) I wonder why I am worrying about whether or not the product I select is genetically modified and is safe for my family to consume. I ask "How did this stressful, unnecessary anxiety wrap itself around our food?" Americans should feel confident about the wholesomeness of our food supply. We need our government at the federal level to step in and stop Monsanto's tyranny!

  • CalArts Divests to Impress
Dear President Lavine, Vice President Matthewson, The CalArts Board of Trustees, and The CalArts Board of Overseers, Climate change is accelerating. We are witnessing the increasing impacts of a warming planet more and more consistently; in this last year alone our country experienced record-breaking heat, droughts, and hurricanes, which impacted hundreds of thousands of people and cost our country hundreds of billions of dollars. Hurricane Sandy alone caused $50bn in damages. Experts agree that global warming caused by humans burning fossil fuels will continue to accelerate and intensify these tragic climate disasters. The scientific consensus is clear and overwhelming; we cannot safely burn even half of global fossil-fuel reserves without dangerously warming the planet for several thousand years. As public pressure to confront climate change builds, we call on The California Institute of the Arts to immediately freeze any new investment in fossil-fuel companies, and to divest within five years from direct ownership and from any commingled funds that include fossil-fuel public equities and corporate bonds. We believe such action on behalf of CalArts will not only be a sound decision for our institution’s financial portfolio, but also for the wellbeing of its current and future graduating classes, who deserve the opportunity to graduate with a future not defined by climate chaos. For the good of our students and our nation, and to preserve the quality of life for this and future generations worldwide, we call upon you to join a growing movement of schools around the country that are committed to preventing a more extreme climate by moving The California Institute of the Arts endowment beyond fossil fuels.

  • Public Power Now
Nevada Energy's management of our energy infrastructure is inefficient, shortsighted, environmentally unsustainable and costly to consumers. Public control and transformation of this vital resource is imperative. A Public Utility District to replace private, for-profit energy management is called for here.

  • Stop the polar bear trophies!
Defeat S.3525, sponsored by Sen. John Tester (D., Montana) which will permit the importation of 41 polar bear carcasses from Canada, slaughtered 4 years ago, and ruled as illegal to import to US. Turning this endangered specie into trophies for the amusement of "sportsman" is only slightly less appalling than turning human skins into lampshades. Please notify your senator to vote NO. HURRY, as it is slated for a vote tonight, Tuesday 13 Nov. 2012. A

  • Ban the Sale of Plastic Water Bottles on Northwestern University's Evanston Campus
At this moment, our oceans are filled with 315 billion pounds of plastic, which collects in giant sinks. Think of a plastic soup seasoned with toxic chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA). These toxins are harmful to humans, the marine environment, and our ecosystems. So what is the first step in solving this problem? Stop using unnecessary plastics like bottled water, which are expensive and detrimental to our environment: 1. Bottled water is 2,800 times more expensive than tap water. 2. Chemical additives found in plastic water bottles can be harmful to human health. 3. Bottled water is not always safer since bottled water companies are not required by law to report quality testing results or to disclose their water sources to consumers. 4. Five of every six plastic water bottles are not recycled, crowding landfills and polluting the environment. 5. The total amount of energy required to produce every bottle is equivalent to filling a plastic bottle ¼ full with oil. 6. It takes 3 liters of water to produce 1 liter of bottled water. 7. More than 25% of bottled water brands are drawn from municipal water supplies, the same place that tap water comes from. A number of universities, including Washington University in St. Louis and Loyola University Chicago have already banned the sale of plastic water bottles on their campuses. Our Engineers for a Sustainable World team, Pura Playa, seeks to ban the sale of plastic water bottles on Northwestern University’s Evanston campus (note: this does not include non-water drinks like soda, juice, etc.). Help us restore our oceans to their natural states by signing the petition below. Sources: 1. 5 Gyres Institute 2. Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health 3. • Tell Mayor Bloomberg: Stop using Styrofoam trays in NYC public schools
Every day NYC public schools use and discard 850,000 Styrofoam trays for school meals. That's a stack of trays over 2 miles high that goes in to our landfills, every single day! Besides the huge impact that this has on the environment, we are exposing our children to toxins from the trays when we place their food directly on it. Mayor Bloomberg has publicly declared his commitment to green policies and our environment and once said, "All our children deserve a healthy start in life. Many people call that environmental justice; I simply call it the right thing to do." I know that with parents, teachers, and DOE staff working together, we can affect change to an environmentally responsible and economically feasible solution. I am appealing to Mayor Bloomberg to become personally involved in making this change, As mayor, he has the authority and influence to find a workable solution in a much smaller timeframe than a grassroots organization of parents and teachers. Mayor Bloomberg, do the right thing for our environment and our children: stop using Styrofoam trays in NYC schools and replace them with an environmentally friendly alternative.

  • NO ON KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE
A piece on NPR predicted that President Obama is likely to approve the pipeline in the name of energy security and perhaps jobs. Given the energy savings projected from vehicle MPG savings, this is exactly the wrong message to send to the American people and the world. Instead we need to implement the recommendations contained in Amory Lovins' "REINVENTING FIRE: Bold Business Solutions for the New Energy Era".

  • Hydrolic Fracturing
There is fracking going on in California. The oil companies have somehow not had to conduct environmental studies. They are NOW being required to let landowners know that there is fracking going on in the vicinity. the environmental damage due to fracking is devastating. I thought we were an environmentally 'aware' state.

  • Keep Jim Sensenbrenner's Big Oil Agenda out of the Science Committee!
Jim Sensenbrenner seeks the top House Science Committee post. Jim still does not think that Climate Change is real. He still pushes a big oil based agenda - discrediting years of quality research form our top scientists and researchers round the world. Either Jim is truly clueless when it comes to this, or more likely he has a hidden agenda - claiming that these fully legitimate climate findings are bunk so he can try to convince the American public that there is no climate issue, and that we can simply keep burning fossil fuels and burning coal like there is no problem. We are smarter than that, and we know it's a problem. As long as there are House members who are manipulating the facts to their own nefarious ends, America's move towards the future of Power will be delayed. Science=YES | Jim=NO! http://news.sciencemag.org/scienceinsider/2012/11/its-official-sensenbrenner-seeks.html
