• A Costly Bill Putting Our Economy and Rivers at Risk
Congressman “Doc” Hastings introduced legislation that would stop river restoration in communities nationwide, hurt local economies, and strip away wildlife protections all to benefit a handful of special interests. This “Dangerous Dams Protection Act” would do sweeping damage to rivers across the country. It would: * Harm rivers and wildlife and threaten public safety by prohibiting federal funds to be used to remove or study the removal of any hydropower dam - even unsafe dams that the dam owner and the local community want to remove. * Slow job growth and hurt businesses by bringing river restoration to a screeching halt and stopping growth in commercial and recreational fishing. * Create an expensive new subsidy that would not only allow private groups to build new dams, whether or not they are in the public interest, but taxpayers would have to reimburse the full cost. This irresponsible bill could be up for debate this month. Will you tell your Representative to oppose this destructive vision for rivers and hydropower – one that is at odds with mainstream thinking about hydropower policy?

  • TOLL BROTHERS = ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION
I live across the street from the beautiful, natural, 500 acre Cedar Mt. in Newington CT. Scores of wildlife, including deer, coyotes, bobcats and a "watch list" bird of prey, make this mountain their home. Wetlands, vernal pools and various types of plant life are part of the awe-inspiring landscape. For the past 3 years, Toll Brothers has been trying to destroy this mountain by building a development of McMansions. We need help stopping the travesty once and for all

  • Chicago Clean Energy Pledge
Our Clean Energy Pledge is asking registered Chicago voters to vote YES on the referendum in Chicago for Community Energy Choice. The referendum if passed will authorize the city to pool residential electricity demands and negotiate a better energy package. Like other Illinois cities, Chicago could ask suppliers to provide them with clean, renewable energy. This will be on the Nov. 6th ballot in Chicago.

  • The Environment
All year, in my own backyard the weather has expressed itself differently than years before. More people in my office have respiratory problems. I fear that the collateral damage that will come from not doing enough for the environment will be more than anyone bargained for- from any other human decision in history- and will occur in our own lifetime.

  • Save our Beaches
Our beaches are being turned into ashtrays. Cigarette butts, along with other trash and debris are consuming our beaches every summer. Smokers continue to toss butts on to the beaches across New England. It needs to stop. Please support a ban on smoking on our beaches.

  • Climate change
Our planet is faced by very rapid global warming and other changes in climate. These changes are the direct result of careless human activities that include deforestation, fossil fuel burning, pollution with particulate matter, increased CO2 in the atmosphere and other factors. As a society, we need to address this issue immediately, and the lack of discussion of this serious problem by either campaign is detrimental to our nation's well-being.

  • Please protect our fresh water resources
Energy production, especially on public lands, involves more than just energy production--it often affects the water resource. In the future, we will be scrambling for all the clean fresh water we can find. Our surface waters are rapidly becoming polluted. Processes like "fracking" are frequently damaging our aquifers too. Please don't let energy production trump clean water.

  • City of Santa Rosa: Stop the use of Round Up!
We are asking that the city of Santa Rosa stop the use of the highly controversial herbicide Round Up. Sonoma County is known for its forward thinking and general care for the environment, so promoting the use of this product is a step backwards. Round Up contains 1,4-dioxane, which is carcinogenic and is known to damage the liver, kidney, brain, and lungs. Spraying vinegar or other natural herbicides seems to be a much better and cost-effective solution. I walk my dog and my children play in areas that have been sprayed, and it concerns me that they are in contact with this product. We stand up and ask the City of Santa Rosa to find an alternative, safe herbicide.
