The settlements are illegal. It's time to say so.Sunday's land-grab of almost 1000 acres in the West Bank is illegal under international treaties that Israel has signed, and--as Israel's strongest ally and closest friend--the US needs to say so. President Obama, the subtle condemnations aren't working. It's time to make it plain to the Israeli government that continued settlement expansion isn't just an obstacle to peace, it's against American interests, American policy, and the Geneva Convention.26 of 100 SignaturesCreated by J Street

President Obama: support a nuclear weapons-free world, as promisedBack in the Cold War days, people were terrified that there would be a nuclear war. Guess what? The danger is still here and it is growing. We are living on borrowed time. Over the next few weeks, President Obama will be making a decision about whether the United States will participate in a historic summit on nuclear weapons that will include delegations from countries around the globe. In 2009 and several times since, President Obama has said that America is committed "to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.” But since actions speak louder than words, this petition asks Obama to be a leader in reducing the danger of nuclear weapons. There are more than 16,000 nuclear warheads still left in the world, most of them much more powerful than the bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 93% are in the arsenals of the US and Russia. For decades we've been told that we don't have to worry about them--that the US and Russia would never get into a war. It's hard to take those assurances seriously in light of the Ukraine crisis where Russian and U.S. allies are fighting a hot war in the middle of Europe. Even if the US and Russia don't stumble into a war through some crisis like Ukraine, there is always the danger of an accident triggering a nuclear conflict. Plus, recent research has shown that even a very "limited" war, such as between India and Pakistan, involving less than 1% of the world's nuclear arsenals, would trigger global climate disruption, cut food production across the world and lead to a "nuclear famine" that would put 2 billion people at risk. Fortunately, a new, global movement is underway to ban nuclear weapons on the basis of their unacceptable humanitarian impacts. In February, 2014, representatives of 146 nations, 3/4 of the world, met in Mexico to discuss what will happen if these weapons are used and what we can do to prevent that. But the United States BOYCOTTED the meeting! The well-entrenched military-industrial complex plans to spend a trillion dollars over the next 30 years on “modernizing” the American arsenal. There will be a follow-up Humanitarian Impact Conference this December, in Vienna. This time, the U.S. should take the high road, constructively attend, and provide leadership to this urgent campaign to rid the world of the greatest threat to human survival.6,792 of 7,000 SignaturesCreated by Physicians for Social Responsibility

Don’t rush into endless war in Iraq & SyriaWe may be on the verge of another costly, open-ended war in the Middle East. President Obama has authorized surveillance flights over Syria. The New York Times called the surveillance flights “a significant step toward direct American military action in Syria.”[1] Obama Administration officials have suggested that U.S. airstrikes against “Islamic State” fighters in Iraq could expand to attacks against “Islamic State” fighters in Syria. [2] But we have a way to try to slow expansion of the US military campaign—and to keep us from getting entangled in another endless war. In July, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed H. Con. Res. 105, stating that Congressional authorization must precede any “sustained combat mission” in Iraq. By insisting now that the President come to them before expanding the use of force - as required by the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution - Congress can slow the rush to war, creating space for diplomatic and political efforts to address the underlying causes of the war. If Congress restricts any authorization of force with a time limit, we will be less likely to find ourselves in another endless war. [4] Tell President Obama and Congress that there must be no blank check to expand airstrikes in Iraq or expand airstrikes into Syria. Sign our petition to help prevent another rush to endless war. Genocide against the Yazidi and Christians in IraqThis genocide cannot be allowed to be continued by the Islamic State (aka ISIS) and we need to go to the UN and formally get these actions declared a genocide. We Demand Answers on IraqToday’s crisis in Iraq has its origins in the Bush administration's disastrous decision to launch a war of choice in 2003. As we continue to live with the consequences of those mistakes, we must recognize the hard reality that lasting and sustainable peace in Iraq can only be achieved with an Iraqi-led political solution. As President Obama has said, there is no viable military solution to this crisis. That is why the recent bombing airstrikes launched in Iraq by U.S. military forces -- and the calls by some in Congress to escalate further -- are troubling. The risks of mission creep, unintended consequences, and incremental escalation are just too high -- and after more than a decade of conflict, America cannot afford another Iraq war. In June, the House passed a bill -- with overwhelming bipartisan support -- that sends a strong message to the president to seek congressional authorization for further military action in Iraq. Congress must demand answers and engage the American people in a debate. This is the time to ask the hard questions and get the answers -- before any further U.S. commitments to taking military action in Iraq. The American people look forward to hearing answers to the difficult but necessary questions.271 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Anna Galland
