Keep Congress in CheckI feel the government shutdown is unacceptable and it is time we start holding members of Congress responsible instead of letting them get an infinite paycheck. I want to do something, but I have a job to report to every day, and responsibilities that I can't just walk away from to go march on Washington. So for now, let's join together and do what we can by signing this petition to hold Congress accountable for their actions!480 of 500 SignaturesCreated by Rachel

No budget--no salary for CongressThis shutdown affects all of us, either directly or indirectly. Having 800,000 people without a paycheck will have adverse effects on the economy, both individually and collectively. Federal employees have had their pay frozen for the past three years. This is the second furlough that they have been forced to endure due to the inability of Congress to get their job done. This is not only a financial issue, but a moral issue as well. It's a matter of loss of pride in our leadership, and a greater loss of trust as well.645 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Brenda D. Hall

No work, no pay for CongressI am sick of fat rich politicians wreaking havoc on common people struggling to survive. They vote to pay themselves for not doing anything! We put them there, we pay them for being there, it's their choice to walk out -- why should we pay them?460 of 500 SignaturesCreated by Dave Trindle

Missouri's Delegation of the 113th U.S. Congress: Grow Up!This petition is the only thing I can think to do that both expresses my displeasure about today's state of affairs in Washington, DC, and proposes what I believe is a completely reasonable solution. I have already sent an open letter to members of the delegation through their websites or Facebook pages. But, of course, they'll feel free to ignore a plea from a single constituent--no matter how enraged he is by their irresponsible behavior.426 of 500 SignaturesCreated by Steven M. Smith

Cross that aisle and end this shutdown! We, the American People, are exasperated and exhausted after watching the political machinations of those who are interested in maintaining their clout in the name of doing what the constituents want. We want a hero, someone who's not afraid to compromise. We want someone who's willing to cross that aisle and make some hard choices without worrying about fallout from the GOP or the Democratic machine. Don't hold out on us. And, by the way, we're smarter than we look; we can smell the arsonist-firefighter a mile away.138 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Jo Ann Hall

Constitutional Amendment to Freeze Congress' Pay During Government ShutdownThe 27th Amendment to the Constitution restricts any Congress from changing its own pay. The measure was proposed in the first days of the Republic but was not ratified until 1992, after a grass-roots movement promoted the idea and the necessary number of state legislatures approved it. While many may have wanted to restrain Congress from increasing its pay, the amendment also blocks Congress from freezing or cutting its compensation. It is time for another grass-roots movement to ensure that in a federal government shut down members of Congress are not getting paid while soldiers and other more essential federal employees must either work without pay or be furloughed. Fair is fair.46,404 of 50,000 SignaturesCreated by Michael Greener

NEVER. Not EverThis is a constructive way to express my extreme frustration and anger at the destruction of a once proud GOP. It provides concrete proof that their tactics are not working now, and will have far reaching consequences, for decades to come.20 of 100 SignaturesCreated by LK HARTER

No pay for Congress during shutdown, but daily fines until government is back in businessThe government shutdown is the fault of both the House and Senate. The members are receiving their pay during the shutdown. Not paying them, and not paying them retroactively--plus a fine of $10,000 per day of the government shutdown--should get the government up and running very, very quickly.1,079 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by frank wasley

No Pay or Benefits for Elected Federal Lawmakers/Officials until Shutdown has EndedIt's time that Congress started behaving like adults and not children and represented the people of this country. Their actions are of no consequence to them as their pay and benefits are not affected. They are supposed to be a government of the people, by the people, for the people--but it's only we the people being hurt by this government shutdown.19,854 of 20,000 SignaturesCreated by Coral Evans

Remove Ted Cruz from office. The government shutdown affects us all. The man most responsible for rallying the votes should be removed from office. The American people should have a say in their government. If the government isn't doing what is best for those people, there should be consequences.3,577 of 4,000 SignaturesCreated by Natalie Loera

Congress Should Not Get Paid in a ShutdownI am a single mother with one child in college and the other about to graduate from high school. I need my paycheck like everyone else. I have a mortgage, car note, and bills like everyone else. Without a job I can't help my children with student loans in any way. But more importantly, with 1.2 million more people out of work this is going to have a major impact on the economy as a whole and the ramifications will still be felt even after we go back to work for small businesses as well as large. The longer we are out, the worse it will be. With the entire economy of the United States at risk, Congress should not continue to be paid for this blunder. Please support this petition and pass it along.747 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Patricia Murray
