  • Say NO to affordable housing in Cape May Court House!!
Concerned with the negative effect affordable housing will have on the community as a whole, and the environment it will disturb. Everything from our taxes, real estate, schools, population, safety, and the disturbance of endangered species being affected with the construction of this low income affordable housing. The real estate market is still very soft, and with the addition of this tax exempt housing, the residents will be hit even harder with poor sales prices, and increased property taxes. Also, hearing that this project may be using 5 million of STORM SANDY's rebuilding funds. Schools in this township are already overcrowded, with the addition of more children, the education and budget will be lessened even more. Endangered species and wildlife will be uprooted, and killed with this construction.

  • Put a Warning Label on Every Corporate-Funded Ad in NYC Elections
New York City’s strong campaign finance system is under threat from a flood of corporate cash, through so-called "independent expenditures" (like the "Super PAC" spending that became legal following the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision). In City Council races, corporate spending can easily overwhelm all other spending by candidates, and become the majority of information available to most voters. One PAC funded by real estate developers plans to spend $10 million in City Council races this year, under the semi-anonymous name "Jobs for New York." The City Council can pass legislation to make every ad carry a warning label so that voters know it is not subject to the campaign finance rules that protect our democracy. In New York City, we also need to close the loophole that corporations use to avoid contribution limits and require them to identify themselves on their ads. Join us in the fight to close corporate loopholes and require transparency to rein in independent expenditures.

  • Restores the Senate Rules for Filibusters
I am tired of the Senate not requiring the filibuster senator to do anything but call for a filibuster. I believe this has been interfering with the fow of business. I favor the original rules for filibuster that requires something of the person calling for a filibuster.

  • Restore the Glass-Steagall Act
For decades, the Glass-Steagall Act supported prosperity in the United States. It did so by reining in risky behavior by financial institutions. Its repeal in 1999 led to reckless and ruinous financial practices. In 2008, those practices caused worldwide financial disaster. Despite efforts to enact laws that would protect our financial system, intense lobbying by the banking industry has meant that our financial system and economy remain at risk. Our banking system must be stable and must serve the people by creating an economy that supports all of us, not just the wealthy. The Glass-Steagall Act provided excellent protections for the economy as a whole. While it may require updating to meet the challenges of today's more interconnected world, its reenactment will limit risk and provide a secure economy. Contact your legislators, and sign this petition: Reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act Now.

  • Stop the elite few from creating their illusion of power to own and run our republic.
    1) Replace the campaign process with an objective public information education system, focused on issues rather than personalities, with automatic fact checking and counterpoint presentation. Give equal access to any party that can, by consensus, form a reasonable, and cohesive platform. Then let that party select representatives and administration in proportion to the total votes they receive. 2) With congress aware that they work for the people, let the process become one of research and education, with the conscience they naturally share with their constituent humanity. They understand their dependence on the vote. These are relatively simple and few provisions that will accomplish what the majority already knows we need, if we raise our voice. Critical thinking and truth are not so expensive that dangerous propaganda cannot be confronted directly no matter how rich it's proponents are.

  • Tell the IRS: Enforce the Law, Stop Secret Campaign Spending
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s horrendous Citizens United ruling, some tax-exempt special interest groups are exploiting an IRS rule to funnel hundreds of millions of dollars into elections from undisclosed sources. Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS alone spent more than $70 million in “Dark Money” in the 2012 elections. These so-called “social welfare” organizations, which qualify as tax exempt under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code, give the super-rich and corporations a way to secretly spend unlimited amounts of money on campaign advertising. The victims of attack ads from these groups are hamstrung in fighting back, because they are unable to identify and publicize the vested interests that are attacking them. But here’s the thing: Federal law says that 501(c)(4) organizations must be devoted *exclusively* to social welfare. By permitting these groups to operate as tax exempt despite spending as much as half of their revenue influencing elections, the Internal Revenue Service is enabling — even encouraging — them to flout the law. If the IRS enforced the law that Congress enacted, 501(c)(4) organizations would not be permitted to engage in substantial election-related activities. Instead, people who wanted to contribute to influence elections would have to give money to political committees, which are set up for that purpose and which must disclose their donors. Reform advocates have filed a lawsuit to force the IRS to change its rules to comply with the law. But no lawsuit should be necessary. The IRS can and should correct its position on its own. Tell the IRS to enforce the law and end Dark Money election spending.

  • Pass the Sunshine in Campaigns Act Now!
The California State Senate has voted to shine a bright light on dark money in elections by passing the Sunshine in Campaigns Act and the California DISCLOSE Act. Now it's the _Assembly's_ turn to act. They may be deciding any day now. The Sunshine in Campaigns Act is 3 bills: SB 2, SB 3, and SB 27. They will: • Stop secretive non-profits like the Arizona group that laundered $11 million into California last election from hiding their donors when they spend millions on campaigns. • Require candidates to “stand by their ads”. • Toughen slate mailer disclosures. • Require the Secretary of State to create a new online reporting system. • Increase the penalties for campaign violations including money laundering. SB 2 and SB 3 are sponsored by California Common Cause and the League of Women Voters of California. SB 27 is sponsored by the Fair Political Practices Commission. Then, the Assembly needs to pass SB 52, the California DISCLOSE Act. SB 52 will stop political ads from deceiving voters by forcing them to reveal who REALLY pays for them -- right on the ads themselves. SB 52 is sponsored by the California Clean Money Campaign. Tell the Assembly to act now by passing the Sunshine in Campaigns Act, and then following through by passing the California DISCLOSE Act!
