  • Michigan Legislature: Stop HB4105!
We need our lawmakers to resist getting swept up in the anti-immigrant fervor that the Trump Administration has legitimized. It is a sorry contradiction that Republicans, emboldened by the Trump administration’s fear-mongering, are attempting to increase the scope of government authority by proposing that police officers and civil servants perform the role of full-time liaisons for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office (ICE).

  • Make Pennsylvania a Sanctuary State
The Pennsylvania Values Act The Pennsylvania Values Act will protect all Pennsylvanians by ensuring that state and local resources are not used for mass deportations, separation of families or to divide Pennsylvanians on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, immigration status, or national or ethnic group. This bill would create “safe zones” around public places such as public schools, courthouses and hospitals. Immigration enforcement would be banned from these places and this bill would also require these agencies to update their confidentiality policies so that immigration status is not shared for enforcement purposes. The Pennsylvania Values Act has not been introduced yet. We are urging our legislators and Gov. Wolf to move this concept forward. Throughout his campaign, President Trump has publicly stated his stance against immigration, where he threatened to increase deportations and target the Muslim community. Now that he is president, he has issued a travel ban that targets Muslims and has begun the process of expanding the deportation of families. He also threatened to cut the funding from cities or counties that declare themselves “sanctuary.” This puts cities and counties in a limbo, to decide between cooperating with immigration enforcement or to lose their funding. This bill is important to the immigrant community because if local and state agencies cooperate with federal immigration authorities, the immigrant community will lose the hard-earned trust of our local agencies. Broken trust can lead our immigrant community to discontinue seeking services such as health services, educational services or they will fear to inquire for law enforcement’s help if they are victims or witnesses of a crime to avoid being questioned about their immigration status.

  • Oppose HB 2000 - Don't require VA police to enforce federal immigration law
HB 2000 must be evaluated in light of Section 8 of President Trump's January 25, 2017 Executive Order entitled "Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States." In that Executive Order, President Trump sets forth his plan to "deputize" state and local police officers to perform the functions of federal immigration officials. Section 8(a) of the Executive Order indicates this plan will be accomplished thorough "agreements" with state and local authorities. HB 2000, which will prohibit any "locality" from adopting ordinances, procedures, or policies that restrict the enforcement of federal immigration laws, seems consistent with and could be used in furtherance of the Executive Order. On its own, HB 2000, given its vague and broad language, will likely be used to require state and local police to identify and detain immigrants of uncertain status for possible deportation. Even if one completely discounts ethical concerns regarding HB2000, it is objectionable on so many other levels. Do we want our local police officers to be an arm of the federal government? Do we want state and local law enforcement, which has the primary goal of protecting Virginia and its local communities, to take on additional responsibilities that will distract it from its mission? Should Virginia citizens pay for the enforcement of federal law by state and local police? Do we want to discourage immigrant residents from cooperating with the police to solve crimes in our communities? I think the answers to these questions is "No!" Please act quickly as this bill has already passed the VA House & will be before the VA Senate Committee on Local Government for consideration as early as February 14, 2017. If it passes that committee, it will go immediately to the Senate for reading & vote. In addition to signing this petition, please contact your State Senator (directory: http://apps.senate.virginia.gov/Senator) and Senator William Stanley, the chairmen of the Committee on Local Government ([email protected]; phone: 804-698-7520), to voice your opposition. Moreover, this bill was proposed by Delegate Charles Poindexter - 9th District, who also proposed HB 2001, which many of you opposed and which would have required state professors to aid ICE in identifying students for deportation. Those of you in his district (9th) may want to contact him to voice your opposition to these types of bills, which require state and local employees to undertake the work of federal agencies. • STOP ANTI-REFUGEE LEGISLATION IN VIRGINIA
If passed, this bill would be the first piece of anti-refugee legislation in Virginia and sets an ominous, discriminatory trend. It requires nonprofit refugee-serving organizations to report humanitarian refugees to the state as if they were potential criminals. These refugees include interpreters who helped the US military and are unsafe in their home country. The Federal government has already approved each and every refugee after a thorough investigation. We should welcome humanitarian refugees to our great country with open arms. Let's stop the Senate from wasting Virginia tax dollars on this discriminatory and dangerous legislation. #nobannowall

  • Hands Off Ohio's Sanctuary Cities
In the wake of Trump's Muslim ban, some Ohio municipalities like Cincinnati have taken the step to declare sanctuary city status. Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel and new State Rep Candice Keller have announced plans to introduce legislation not only to outlaw sanctuary cities but to hold their elected officials responsible for crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. This is an assault on local government, free speech, and the inclusiveness of our communities. http://www.wcpo.com/news/local-news/hamilton-county/cincinnati/sanctuary-city-update-state-legislation-would-ban-criminalize-cincinnatis-sanctuary-city-status

  • Don't write Trump's anti-immigrant racism into our state law
Immigrants who live in Rhode Island, our families and our neighbors, face escalating threats from Trump racist policies. These policies are tearing families apart and trample on civil and human rights. Now, several of our Democratic lawmakers want to make it a crime for our local officials not aggressively enforce their policies. This bill would destroy local efforts to build trust between local officials and the immigrant community. And when our neighbors are afraid to call the cops, we are all less safe. This bill would undermine our values and our safety. It has no place in the Rhode Island State House. Tell Reps. Corvese, Ucci, Phillips, Coughlin, and O’Brien to take their names off it now.

  • Tell Congress: Rescind the "Muslim Ban" Executive Order
U.S. Senator Feinstein has introduced a bill in the U.S. Senate that would immediately rescind Donald Trump's Muslim Ban executive order. U.S. Representative Lofgren has also introduced the SOLVE Act in the House of Representatives to defund and rescind the ban. The United States Constitution expressly protects individuals from persecution perpetrated by their own government. This includes discrimination based on faith, on national origin, and on skin color. The executive order ban on travelers from Muslim-majority and Middle Eastern nations is one of the first steps in a Trump-era agenda that criminalizes faith, nationality, and people of color. The Muslim Ban is an attempt to illegally legislate discrimination -- and is not about safety at all. That’s why more than 16 State Attorneys General signed onto a letter saying the ban is unlawful and un-American; many states are suing; and it’s also why several federal judges have already ruled the same. In short, Trump’s ban is putting our nation on the verge of a Constitutional crisis. Together, we can stop the Muslim Ban. Sign on now!

  • Miami-Dade Must Protect Immigrants from Donald Trump’s Deportation Force!
Donald Trump’s recent actions on immigration are a dramatic, radical, and extreme assault on immigrants and the values of our country, which is why we must fight back against them. In Florida, Miami-Dade’s Republican Mayor, Carlos Gimenez, has terminated critical protections that would shield immigrant families from Donald Trump’s Deportation Force. Without these protections, countless families could be separated from their loved ones, profiled and criminalized by local police, and be subject to deportation under Donald Trump’s extreme executive orders on immigration. Immigrants are part of Miami-Dade's vibrant community and have a long history of contributing to local economy and culture, which is why we cannot allow Mayor Gimenez to turn over immigrants across Miami-Dade to Donald Trump’s Deportation Force. Put simply; Mayor Gimenez should be protecting the hard-working immigrant families across Miami-Dade, not looking to score political points with racists like Donald Trump. If we want to keep immigrant families safe from Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant attacks, then we must hold Republican Mayor Carlos Gimenez accountable and ask the Miami-Dade County Commission to reinstate protections for immigrants across South Florida immediately!
