  • President Biden: Commute the sentences of federal prisoners on home confinement!
In June 2020—the day before my 75th birthday—I was approved for home confinement under a provision in the to limit the spread of COVID in American federal prisons. It was a very strict criteria: people had to have completed more than 50 percent of their sentence, never engaged in violence, committed no disciplinary infractions in the past year and received the lowest score on the department’s risk-assessment tool. We are being incarcerated for low level offenses, and President Biden can act now to keep us with our families. I was fitted with an ankle monitor that tracked every move I made, and I could not go anywhere without permission from my case manager. But I was aware of the restrictions and grateful to be at home with my 95-year-old mother and family. I had signed up for a computer class administered by the Maryland Justice Project, which was being held in a building owned by the Baltimore City Police Department. I didn’t know the building was designed to prevent GPS and other signals as a security measure, so the ankle monitor I was required to wear lost its signal. My case manager called me, but I’d turned off my phone so I could focus in class—I’d been labeled an escapee, and had to return to prison over this minor misunderstanding. Luckily, I was released after three weeks, and was given a compassionate release by a judge—but this was only after national media coverage and public pressure. Thousands of other people are continuing to live in constant fear, worried that at any given moment, they’ll be ripped away from their families, homes, and communities, and sent back to prison. And in fact, there’s a chance that all of the people currently serving out their sentences in home confinement will have to return to prison once the federal COVID emergency order ends—this was the Trump DoJ’s order, and the Biden administration has shown no signs of changing that. President Biden, please act now to keep these people home. They are doing everything right, yet they wake up every day not knowing where they will be in a few months, and that uncertainty makes it impossible to plan for their futures. Please remove that cloud. Commute their sentences now. I wrote about my experience for the Washington Post in July, and you can read the full story here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/07/15/gwen-levi-home-confinement-prison-biden/

  • STOP THE CALIFORNIA RECALL
We don’t have the luxury of hanging up on reality. There is so much at stake: Healthcare, poverty, racial equity, public safety, housing, social programs — the list goes on. We cannot let the Conservative party win and implement policies that sow hate and division and take away what we have worked so hard for. The party that embraces Trump and all that he stands for — xenophobia, racism, classism, white supremacy, extremism, snd so much more. Their top candidate is a Trump Republican who will unravel all that is good in our State, including the progress that we have made. The struggle for equity and dismantling of hate will be under attack. If you still aren’t feeling the pressure — remember that the power of a governor is immense. Imagine meaningful legislation that we have advocated for never being signed into law. Our hands will be tied. The poll results are in and show that if we don’t show up to vote, the recall will 100% happen. If you do nothing else in this stressful year, please make it voting and reaching out to others to VOTE NO on the recall. Please contact the author of this petition for details on how to GET INVOLVED and SPRED THE WORD. And vote. Vote. VOTE. Kimberly Adams [email protected] 714-325-5303

  • Keep your promise. Stop funding insurrectionists like Ron Johnson!
The world watched in horror as white supremacist Trump supporters violently attacked the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of our free and fair election. In the aftermath, General Motors was part of a wave of companies who suspended donations to election objectors, pledging to pause their political contributions and reevaluate their standards. But it turns out that GM has donated tens of thousands of dollars to re-elect lawmakers who voted to overturn the election, making them one of the top corporate donors to insurrectionists. Senator Ron Johnson is among them. Johnson is trying to rewrite history by lying and saying that January 6 was “by and large a peaceful protest.” It was not. Johnson has even gone so far as to vote to object to the election results, to acquit Donald Trump for inciting the insurrection, and to block a bipartisan commission to investigate the attack. General Motors paused their political donations to insurrectionists and then started up again when they thought no one was watching. Nothing has changed. Ron Johnson has still enabled attacks on our democracy and values corporate profits over his constituents. And he is one of the leading apologists in Congress trying to rewrite the history of the fatal insurrection of January 6. None of the lawmakers who voted to overthrow the American people's election should receive a single dollar more in donations. And Ron Johnson is particularly reprehensible. Throughout history, we've consistently seen white supremacy and right-wing groups go unchecked for the violence and terror they cause. We saw Donald Trump get both enabled and supported by Republicans for four years as he attacked our democracy over and over. Then, after inciting the insurrection, the Republican Party did nothing to hold Trump accountable. And that’s not all: Senate Republicans used the Jim Crow filibuster, a tool invented by pro-slavery senators before the Civil War that prevented the passage of over 200 anti-lynching bills over the years, to block a bipartisan commission that would have investigated this attack on our democracy. This is what General Motors’ donations are enabling. It’s unacceptable for them to backpedal on their promise to stop funding insurrectionists. Republicans like Ron Johnson consistently got in the way of providing much-needed relief to hurting Americans but magically found funds for the wealthy and corporations by passing a massive tax cut. They called the virus a hoax while hundreds of thousands of people died across the country. They packed the courts. They pushed through a Supreme Court justice in eight days, seven days before a presidential election. They incited an insurrection led by white nationalists. Johnson is more interested in spreading lies and conspiracy theories than in governing for the American people. He is one of the richest members of Congress who has consistently turned his back on his constituents when they needed him most, while looking out only for himself, special interests, and his bank account. After a briefing on the COVID-19 in January 2020, before many of us knew of the possibility of a pandemic, Johnson sold millions of dollars in stock to line his own pockets. He was the deciding vote on legislation that gave the ultra-rich and corporations a $1.7 trillion tax cut. Then, while hundreds of thousands of Americans died from COVID-19, millions were going hungry, and millions were unemployed and living paycheck to paycheck, he voted against COVID-19 relief and direct payment relief that would actually help people … twice. Enough is enough. The GOP Treason Caucus objected to the election results, refused to hold Trump accountable for inciting a deadly insurrection, helped him evade consequences, and blocked an investigation on the attack. General Motors, stop funding white supremacy, insurrection, misinformation, conspiracy theories, violence, and attacks on our democracy!

  • Jamaica Qns residents fight CM Miller for clean environment & NO waste increase. Kill Int 2349-A
Our fight for a clean environment and clean air, must be heard. Pollutants from the local waste transfer stations on Douglas Ave. have caused asthma, cancer, and other health ailments in our community, and enough is enough. We have been neglected too many years by our elected officials in exchange for them getting funding from these waste stations in Jamaica, Queens. Waste stations “fund our NYC parks” and “help the community” while they get passes to pollute our community. We must fight against this environmental racism.

  • Expand Medicare Now!
I am burdened by my health care costs. I am unable to afford basics, and I'm now facing expensive repairs to my home. As a senior, I feel forgotten by our current system. I feel like we are being punished for living because it is so difficult to live as a senior. I am a senior citizen in Rome, Georgia, living on a fixed income. Both my husband and I are on Medicare as well as a supplemental plan that we pay for monthly. Still, we have an out-of-pocket deductible we must meet before any of our insurance kicks in, which this year took three long months. Our prescriptions are a huge burden for us also. We are at the point where we are having to make either/or decisions with everyday items just to get by and afford our healthcare. I am urging congress to include expanded Medicare coverage and increase prescription access as part of the American Families Plan. Right now, Congress is debating if they should expand Medicare in the American Families Plan. Specifically, Congress must strengthen Medicare to include hearing, dental, and vision benefits, as well as an out-of-pocket cap; expand Medicare by lowering the eligibility age from 65 to as low as possible; and enable Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices for everyone. These would not only benefit me, but nearly 38 million people would gain vision, dental, and hearing coverage, and more than 2 million uninsured would get access to quality, affordable health care. We have to use this chance to pass bold legislation while we have the majority. The clock is ticking! Please join me in urging Congress to do the right thing and expand Medicare coverage through reconciliation.

  • End cash bail in LA County!
As you read this, millions of people across the country are being held in jail even though they haven’t been convicted with any crime. In the vast majority of states and counties, if people charged with a crime can’t afford to pay their bail, they’re forced to sit in jail until their trial date, which can take weeks, months, or sometimes even years. Pretrial detention often leads to all sorts of challenges for a jailed person, including job loss, housing loss, and, if they are a caretaker, complications with child or eldercare. And above all, cash bail leads to unequal treatment under the law, and this is a violation of our Constitution. Regardless of a person’s ability to post bail, they should be granted the same rights and presumption of innocence.

  • Restore Press Freedom!
Today the entire mainstream media is owned by only FIVE corporations, all of which are run by people who are invested in weapons and war. The result is a media that always starts with a pro-interventionist position and is staffed by former intelligence officials and generals that protect the government narrative instead of the truth. Additionally, it is extremely rare for mainstream media outlets to have on opposing viewpoints, especially from the left, to have debates and discussions. We need a return to fairness, truth and civil debate.
